Disagree. DK, Hill and Chase are all burners. And it is a huge advantage for them.
Yeah, I’m preparing an epic crashout if we take Delane over Tate. Makes me almost hope Tate just goes at 6 to the Browns or whoever, and even then I’ll hope it’s Styles who falls to us, although in that case I’m better with Delane. But over Tate if he’s available…I’m expecting it and will still be upset. It’s just going to be another step towards irrelevance for this current staff, it feels like an almost tangible future to me. I really don’t want to watch a slow-motion car crash again but Quinn (and by extension AP) seem really stubbornly set on it. I’m thinking in retrospect we’ll all agree that Quinn just wasn’t a good choice for this modern era of football and Peters is so collaborative that I think it’s lead him opposite of the direction he would’ve grown in if he’d hired a more innovative forward-thinker to become half of his brain-trust. Or this is all Peters and he just never has shown the eye for talent we were lead to believe. So far at least.

I’ve moved Tate up more and more. The more I look at the receivers, the more I think the better ones aren’t there at 71. Which means we have one shot to give JD help. Real help.
I also looked at receivers under contract for next season and immediately got terrified.
I’m also souring a touch on Styles. Love his upside but I hate how little explosion he shows in contact and how high he tackles. Part of that is his height. And I do think he can fix it.
I’d love to have Styles. Delane and him are close for me. But only after Tate. Our receiver situation is fucking terrifying.

Ironically, I won’t be upset until I see how 71 plays out. I’m still foolishly holding out hope we can get BTJ somehow. So Styles/Delane/Downs + BTJ is a win.
But my butthole will pucker big time while I wait.
It’s fine if you feel that way about Tate, but it’s actually Tyson who has HORRIBLE movement patterns. The way he places his feet and cuts puts insane strain on his hips, knees, and ankles and that’s part of why he’s hurt all the time. People think it looks explosive but he moves like someone trying to tear a ligament.
Fusue’s been posting about it a lot lately. In my eyes it’s actually Tyson who has the RG3 legs and movement and it’s going to keep haunting him:
Fusue is a nutter in a lot of ways but he pays obsessive attention to detail when it comes to how guys cut and move, points it out every year (especially if a prospect has valgus knees, or cuts like Tyson), and more often than not those guys do get hurt more often. He called it with Nabors as well and many others.
It’s not about having thin legs, it’s how you anchor and move and where your weight is over your feet and hips, and how your ankles roll as you move over your feet. Tyson is a huge red flag with this stuff and it doesn’t matter if his legs “look” more solid. Kadarius Toney was built like a horse in comparison and couldn’t keep healthy because of the way he moved and cut.

And the WR's reaching 71 don't seem like players that would be able to be impact players at least early in the season. We need an immediate impact WR. Tate fits the bill!
It builds upon what they do and makes aspects of their games special. It is not an essential trait for the position. Plenty of guys with Tate’s speed and route-running ability are elite, including downfield. You aren’t drafting him to fill the very particular role of being a speedy game-breaker.
It is empirical fact that 40 time (and athleticism as a whole) does not at all correlate with WR hit rates and production. It’s why uber-athlete sleepers at WR in the mid-rounds almost never, ever develop or hit. Route-running and tempo is much more important in the league. The guys you named are the exception and were elite in other ways without the timed speed anyways.
Also he wins downfield much closer to how DK does, who is a totally different type of mover and runner than Chase/Hill. Closer to an AJ Green type mover and deep threat. People worried he was too slow, remember. That was years ago and analytics are much more advanced, and we know now that unless you are filling a particular kind of clear-out deep threat role, that sort of speed does not correlate with anything unless the player is already an elite prospect without it.
Tyreek Hill is also pretty much the exception of a lifetime in a lot of ways because he was barely even a WR when he was drafted. Then he developed quickly and it turned out he had ball tracking ability behind only maybe Desean Jackson and Antonio Brown in this century. You can’t base your decisions around the exceptions. Alpha WR’s with elite speed are the exception. Most guys with that sort of speed aren’t well-rounded enough to ever be highly productive, it’s just something nice to have on top of an already elite skillset. It’s never THE trait that makes a guy special. Even the aforementioned Desean Jackson was only special because of his ability to track the ball while being a burner. Not just being a burner.
Anyways, I’m rambling. An unbelievable amount of research has been done on this and elite speed is a nice-to-have on an already elite prospect. It is not a differentiator on its own. And lacking it is the opposite of a disqualifier, it literally does not matter as long as the prospect hits minimum athleticism benchmarks and has the rest of the skillset needed.
I am resting my head on my pillow comfortably tonight. I refuse to buy into the chatter from all these “insiders.” We are taking Tate if he is sitting there at #7. There were a lot of quality Corners available in FA that we seemingly didn’t even try to pursue. Decent names like Dean, Stokes, Watson, Taylor, Newsome, Woolen, etc, were available in FA and we targeted a Slot Corner in Robertson right out of the gate, which to me was a vote of confidence for Sainristril and Amos on the outside heading into training camp. To me that suggests Delane is not the primary target. At LB, we signed a guy who still has room to get even better in Chenal, and all we have been hearing is that they have been high on Magee forever. Maybe this rules out Styles. It’s got to be Tate. Last year, there wasn’t a soul who projected Conerly at #29. Ignore the noise. Watch what they do, not what they say.
I considered saying the same thing. I think the whole narrative that Tyson is some special WR is mostly based on his jerky movement skills. Especially seperating on the first level he sort of runs with a wild abandon where its not linear -- and that's part of why he's good at seperating at that level but also the wild way he flings his legs is also likely why he also gets hurt.
The video that he personally put out in his pro day also showed him doing that in mid air -- his whole thing is about contorting his body-legs like he's doing yoga moves in motion.
I’d be very down for your proposed Payne + 71 type offer for a BTJ type, even if I’m not as high on him in general. There has just been so little chatter out of JAX that he could even be available to begin with that I haven’t been considering it a realistic option.
Sitting at 71 hoping a WR falls into our range is a scary prospect.

He also has zero clue how to take contact. Dude gets absolutely wrecked on a regular basis.
Also I think that extra zig and zag that he does is sometimes not needed and that extra movement makes him a target for a defender cuing in on him and also is part of the reason why he's not good with YAC. He's dancing, when he should be escaping and breaking away.

Oh, I don't think it's realistic. I am trying to manifest it.
I'm not huge on BTJ - but he'd immediately be our best receiver not named Terry. Maybe even close to McLaurin.
But that would be the only thing holding my frustration back.
I think Sarratt, for example, immediately makes us better. At this point, looking at the draft, mocks, my own projections, other positions, etc.... I'd be shocked if he's on the board at 71. I think the League is higher on him than the draft community.
Lots of wasted movement Jerry Jeudy style, too. So it’s not even just injury-causing, it also just may not work in the NFL. It took Jeudy years to develop into a barely average NFL WR because the flashy way he “got open” against college DB’s didn’t really win in the NFL and he had to learn to actually run routes. Not herky-jerky flinging his legs around, but deceptive samey routes run with tempo and broken off with no tell. These guys sometimes run routes like the TikTok WR camp videos everyone makes fun of, where grifters teach teenagers to do dumb shit off the snap that looks explosive but doesn’t actually do anything. Quick feet off the snap, along with hands, can help break through press…but that’s not what these guys are doing, to my eyes. But I’m no expert, just a hobbyist.
I hope you’re right. Projecting a pick all the way down at 29 is a lot harder than 7 though.
