The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

Very aggressive and missing out on key targets is not aggressive enough in my book.

AP should have absolutely gone all in on a couple more FA. He gets too much leeway.

If it’s a safe draft then he’s underwhelmed again.

Got to be some creativity and a couple of key acquisitions ahead.

They werent out there. The premium FA WR in this free agent class was Alec Pierce, a guy who got paid like a top 10 WR and he's not even a WR1 yet. Look at these names, and the contracts given out.

Doubs is the one who I would have preferred the most. Getting further down that list, there isn't exactly a gaggle of WR2s that hit the market.

Eh? Will it go up?

Let’s say there are 5 teams now that would like him and that dwindles to 3 after the draft because other teams get guys in the draft.

I’m not sure he doesn’t get a little desperate and takes a lower deal.

Also, I don’t think they want to sign him to a longer term deal until they know what they get in the draft.

Maybe it’s me. After round 2 of FA passes, I was fine with them waiting for the draft and then getting aggressive after it if needed.

Assuming they continue to be aggressive.

Overspending for an average player has never ended well.

I didn't say it WOULD go up, i just said it wouldn't go down... if the board breaks wrong, a team COULD get more desperate and that could bump that price up a couple Million....

Depends on how you define 'Top 10'. Pierce has dominated the NFL in yards per catch for 2 straight seasons. That's a pretty important stat. We couldn't pry him out of Indy so it's a moot point, but whether they overpaid (we reportedly were willing to pay him as much as Indy) remains to be seen.

If you’re starting a team he’s not one of the top 10 WRs taken.

I’d argue he’s not even a No 1 Wr. He’s got a value, he’s good, but he’s getting paid like the top of the position and he’s not that

And the point was that he was the most coveted target, it was a very thin FA class for WRs. Only a couple actual difference makers (him being one of them) but they didnt neglect the position, the options just weren’t there for the most part

It’s semantics, but we didn’t get any of those guys and haven’t filled the position for three years. It has been neglected.

If I had plans to go out but my kids were here and I failed to get a babysitter that would be tough luck. If I went out anyways and left them alone that would be neglect.

In this case the babysitter is wide receivers and the kid being left alone is Jayden.

The argument changes when the only people who agreed to babysit are a crack head and a convicted felon

They failed to sign him. I think failure contributes to 'neglect'. I guess I understand the argument 'they tried', but they have failed to upgrade our WR corps and in fact, it's worse now than it was in 2026 without resigning Deebo.

You know I have been harping on the WR thing for awhile Primus Porcus - so I'm a little bitter. We've wasted some serious draft capital in recent years drafting guys who didn't produce. And we passed on some good WRs in the process. I think we are making it very very hard on Jayden Daniels.

Won’t be long until a greater number of receivers are in the $40m+ AAV contract range and the Pierce deal will be top 20-25 money.

At least we have a boatload of cap space left……

That’s all we’ve done. It hasn’t worked.
How can you look at this offseason and say we've been passive?

And I agree with Voice_of_Reason--waiting until after the draft is smart, signing Jennings or Deebo now would be impatient, and somewhat panicky. Either would be redundant depending on who draft.

However, because of how free agency came out, we almost have to go offense at #7. I'd love Love, but I'd also take Tate.

On offense? We’ve been pretty passive.

-failed to get receivers (3 years running), haven’t done anything since.
-released our starting center, even if they don’t like him, they could have held him for a bit.
-signed RBs, which are improvements, so I’ll give them that
-not sure how good Chris Paul is
-Chig is Zach Ertz but with upside
-promoted an assistant QB coach to OC and got rid of all the experience on our staff

We have done zilch at receiver. Nada. Nothing.

And Peters himself said the goal was to surround Jayden with weapons. If it was one offseason of swings and misses I’d be okay with it. It’s been several.

Very easy to say we haven’t done much worthwhile on offense so far.

Defense is a different story.

Ok, setting aside Samuel for a moment, since he's still a possibility, you'd rather have Noah Brown, Chris Moore, Robbie Choosen, et al than who we currently have?

We didn't succeed, but saying we were passive is untrue. We were very active--throwing a lot of money at Pierce as well as pursuing Dobbs. We chased Linderbaum, and made legitimate offers to all of them. If you want to debate about why we didn't get them, have at it. Should we have gone Cerrato-level overspending?

Passive means we were sitting around smelling our own fart--and that's just not true. Lack of effort was not the problem.

We tried and failed and since then we have been sitting around smelling our own farts.

It can change. But this is such a dire situation I wouldn’t have let it linger.

You’re higher than Peters than I am, so it makes sense you’re satisfied and I’m not.

I am happy with a lot of what we’ve done on defense. So there’s that.

We have no legit #2 WR. Period. I’m not sure we have a legit #3 and we threw away a 5th round pick on the one we did have and let him walk. It’s bad.

Nada and nothing is incorrect. Not nearly enough and not good enough is probably fair.

Does make you wonder how long “well, they tried” flies with people. As if they aren’t fanning the flames of those media narratives so fans KNOW they tried, to offset the fact that they failed. Happened a few times last offseason too, it’s really important to them to be mentioned as the 2nd place destination that juuust couldn’t get it over the line. You can tell bc it’s a consistent drumbeat about our negotiations, regarding a FO that doesn’t really leak anything.

You can’t control where players want to go. But 0% of it is about failing to convince guys this is where they want to be? 0% of it is about the whiff of our overall inexperienced coaching staff being on the hot seat and not seeming like a stable destination? 0% of it is about doing Daniels so dirty last year that he’s seen as a question mark and not enough of a draw to come and catch passes from? It’s 100% that guys like Pierce, Doubs, Nailor, etc. just LOVE Indy, NE, LV? No questions about this operation and their ability to bring in talent? Just welp, we tried, it’s the effort that counts! And for how many years do we accept that as the roster flounders?

Losing Deebo and adding Van Jefferson is a negative. Adding Dyami Brown isn’t much because he was here already and we let him go.

So, I disagree. That’s okay. Some of you guys are more satisfied and accepting of Peters reign so far than I am.

You’ll never convince me otherwise. He needs to. And I doubt he cares what I think.

But the flip side is also true. If Pierce and Doubs went elsewhere and then they broke the bank for Jennings because he was the best of what was left would that have been a good move? Would it fix the receivers room?

I agree that Peters has failed when it comes to upgrading the WR room. Our options right now are pretty bad. We can "reach" at 7 for a wide receiver who most years wouldn't be considered that highly. We can gamble that Aiyuk signs with us, he gets up to speed without a hitch, and the two years off haven't impacted his on field performance, or we can sign someone to a one-year contract and hope they have a renaissance like Ertz. None of these are inspiring options.

To be honest though, Pierce and Doubs would have been good signings, but neither would have been inspiring.

No, I just reject the words you chose. I'm not satisfied or accepting at all. I just think the word "nothing" is mathematically incorrect.
