The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

I actually think drafting Tyson increases his chances of being fired more than not drafting any receivers.
I don't believe Tyson is on our board except for some extreme, late, trade down scenerios. I truly believe him when he is crossing off anyone with high injury concerns.

The exception is Downs. Does he truly have medical concerns or no? I think AP would probably take him for what I said about him starting since day one as a true freshman at 2 major and didn't miss a single game in 3 years

Everything I've read is that the health concern stuff on Downs was exaggerated and that it's a non-issue. I think he would be a good pick if Love, Tate, Styles aren't there but I wonder if AP would make that selection given Downs is just a good athlete. I haven't seen a RAS score on him, but he is not elite athletically which seems to be very important to Peters. I'm of the belief that elite athleticism is always a plus, but I'd rather we put a premium on actual play and instincts - which Downs is elite in - than just raw physical measureables.

I think there is a high degree of probability that Washington fans will leave Thursday night disappointed. Love has gotten so much pre-draft hype as the next big thing that he will get grabbed (either by one of the teams in front of us or because someone trades up to get him). I hope if he isn't there that Tate is - because we haven't done what we said we were going to do, which is to surround Jayden with great weapons. We really need to focus on that.

Anything less than Love will keep some of the fans disappointed. It would have been nice but oh well, there has never been a great chance of him reaching 7 anyways.

I agree that Tate seems like the logical choice at 7, assuming Lemon isn't the #1 WR on his board. The thing there is his board could show the highest rated WR being much further down the board.

So does he move from his board? I only think he should if one of the perceived defensive studs lands in their lap and they are enamored with them and have them ranked high.

If we were to draft Jordyn Tyson… and he gets hurt… Peters is so fired.

I watched that segment, all he basically said is why wouldn't the Commanders draft him versus that's what they are hearing they are considering doing. So I don't take it even a little seriously.

Peters didn't even go to Arizona State to watch the workout. I am not worried about it.

To me it would be a ridiculous pick.

It seems like every draft there is one dude that just out of nowhere gets hyped at the end, this year its Tyson, the odd thing about him is he got plenty of early hype, then it cooled to medium level, then weeks ago the buzz was he's going late first might even be 2nd round, now this last week he's been the toast of the town. Weird ride as for buzz for Tyson.

there is almost nothing they can do among the picks projected to them that would piss me off. I like all of them for different reasons. Heck even Bain although I have doubts about him, I'd get it.

Tyson would be the one who would piss me off. But I am not worried about it at all. Having said that if past is prologue, I take insider stuff especially from Keim the most seriously the week of, and we aren't there yet, so I don't feel out of the woods on this until next week's buzz.

Something about Tyson worries me. Besides the injuries. I saw Harmon compare the way he gets open short in college to Jerry Jeudy (meaning people mistake wasted-movement jukes that look good to the average person for excellent route-running, when it won’t work like that in the pros) and I couldn’t shake that. I do feel like I see some of it

He's so twitchy and I can see how some love that. You don't have a lot of twitchy Wrs especially in short space among this WR class. Seperates in small spaces. Also not something common with this class.

But my issues with him is for a dude who majors in first level catches, he's meh as to YAC. Tate isn't a YAC guy either but heck his YAC numbers beat Tyson. And as to contested catches, he's up and down. He also had drop issues the season before. Seems like a nice guy but also a bit of a weird dude -- not quite as weird as Cravens but had some flashbacks to him watching some of his interviews.

The Downs medical stuff was shot down as false, unless I am missing something.

I don’t think it’s as simple as saying the Downs medical stuff was “shot down as false.” The reporting at the time was that he had a minor meniscus tear and that there were concerns about potential degenerative knee issues. Those are two different things.

The meniscus tear is a descriptive medical finding. Either he had a tear or he didn’t, so that part is more of a true or false type of fact. The “degenerative” label is different. That’s not a concrete diagnosis in the same way, it’s an opinion about what the condition could mean long term. It’s one evaluator’s interpretation of the medical information, not the underlying fact itself.

What got pushback wasn’t really the existence of a knee issue, it was the characterization of it as degenerative. Other teams reportedly did not view it that way, so it wasn’t a consensus opinion across the league. So I think the more accurate way to frame it is that the facts and the interpretation got blended together, and the disagreement was mostly about the interpretation, not necessarily the underlying medical finding.

I agree 100%

I never say never. But I am 99% confident that Tyson isn’t on our board.

Peters himself said they wouldn’t go after oft-injured guys. That eliminates him.

If Peters were to draft him he’s basically signing his walking papers ahead of time. Just doesn’t compute.

I am pretty confident that it’s going to be Love, Styles (which I think will be gone) and if not then it’s Delane.

My only gripe is if Tate is there it feels kind of off. And again, nothing to do with Delane. I’ll be excited as all hell to have that dude on our defense… but not taking Tate in that situation just feels kind of wrong.

That means we’re relying on either an aging veteran, a third round rookie or Treylon Burks to turn our receiver situation from worst in the league to bottom third in the League.

Then again, Delane IS a better player, and I don’t believe mistakes should compound themselves because we failed at receiver for multiple years.

But, then again - goal one this offseason was surrounding JD5 with weapons and so far… epic fail.

My position all along has been that there was never any real reporting about it. It was one report from one questionable source that was never repeated by any of the multitude of plugged-in NFL media insiders.

Yeah this week judging by Keim and some extent the national buzz -- Love, Styles, Delane. Keim seems to be the only one on Delane so lol will see how good he does with that. Many in the national media think Delane is going likely 8 to the Saints and that's his ceiling. But I buy what Keim is hearing. It's not purely because Keim said it -- it's that it also jives with their meetings -- any player who gets both a top 30 and a combine is heavy in consideration if past is prologue. And it jives with Peters drafting history who seems to value that spot especiallly.

Having said that if past is prologue, sometimes there are shifts as to buzz in the last week including from Keim, so will see. And of course, its always possible that everyone is wrong. Will see.

As far as Tate goes, national buzz is a bit all over the place, too. McShay has gone from he's going top 5 just a week ago, to now he doesn't think so. It's not just Keim who strongly hinted they like Tate but not at 7, so it would be in a trade down. Some Giant insider said the exact same thing about Tate as to the Giants perspective, but who knows -- not at 5 but in a trade down.

Maybe the Tate buzz warms up again next week. I recall for example the idea that this team would take Trent, didn't get red hot until the week of. Sadly ditto as to Emmanuel Forbes, so there could be a shift.

As Keim said on his last podcast. And lol, I am not bringing it up to regurgitate a debate on what he said. But ironically that debate, forced me to relisten to it. And Keim I think perfectly articulated the cognitive dissonance on Tate. After saying he doesn't think they take him, he gives the back and forth on him. The positive of taking him as he goes its such a big need, he's a good player and that should factor. Then he goes to contractict myself -- he said you don't take him if you don't love him, don't let need drive it, and then got into other WR options later in the draft.

I get Keim's point. I generally agree. But to me if its close, I'd go with the need because the need is so big its ridiculous. And its the same need that this team has had for years and hasn't been addressd. And for those who really want Tate, I don't take Keim's podcast (if he's right) as that much of a negative. He flat out referenced he thinks he's in play if there is trade down. Also if he's right about them having Styles, Love, Delane (the Delane point he's made more indirectly) via multiple podcasts. What if all three players are gone? If so it could be Tate at 7.

I totally get why some in the national media think its slam dunk they should take Tate. They potentially have the worst WR room in the league sans the Dolphins -- and an injury to Terry would make it the worst WR in the league -- lol a couple of national insiders think sans Terry it might be the worst in the history of the league.

I am aware that its about the characterization of it being degenerative, otherwise its a nothing burger.

Same thing right now about McCoy, ACL obviously more serious than a meniscus tear, but the discussion is the fear of is its degenerative -- is it or not, I don't know.

Sticking with the Tate theme. This dude below covers the Cowboys ironically and lol he's concerned about the lack of weapons for this team. He's posted on it multiple times.

Our offensive skill position roster is absolutely abysmal.

I believe, that it is not out of the question, that we have the absolute worst skill group in the NFL.

Our RB situation is among the worst in the League, though improved significantly from last year.

WR1 we are middle of the road with an aging Terry, but that's not bad - I'll take that.

WR2 we are bottom of the league.

WR3 we are bottom of the league.

Tight end we are, I'll say middle of the League. Though, it is FAIR to note that our primary offensive weapon signing, Chig Okonkwo, was 17th in the NFL in tight end receiving yards and 15th in tight end receptions. Ertz was 21st in yards and 18th in receptions. No, I am not saying we didn't upgrade. And yes, I do think he will have a better year this season simply because there isn't many options... but there weren't many in Tennessee, either. I'll take middle of the road.

Looking at the NFL receiving yards leaders list, and counting our current guys as being Commanders here is where we rank:

McLaurin - 66th - Injured - I give him the benefit of the doubt as I expect a rebound but he IS getting older.
Burks - 249th
Jefferson - 121st
Dyami - 182nd
McCaffrey - 200th
Lane - 183rd
Chig - 71st
White - 189th
Ford - 268th
Bill - 314th

Things I think you can count on:

-Terry will be higher if healthy
-Someone else will do better based on necessity
-Chig probably will, at worst, stay the same and at best get to top 50

I also am fully aware that you cannot base next year's production on last year's.

But... this is concerning. In a glaring way.

It's so bad that a third round rookie WOULD probably surpass everyone on this list's 2025 - including possibly Terry and Chig.

It's so bad that a guy who is "only a running back" in Jeremiyah Love would probably surpass all of these guys in receiving production based on their '25 numbers.

Tate would probably surpass them all as well.

We talk about this alot... but I still think we don't talk about it enough.

And no, I'm not saying this means we have to draft Tate at 7 if Love isn't there. I understand taking Delane. He is a stud. I understand Styles. He has stud projections. But we have dropped the ball COUNTLESS times at receiver. And some people still aren't worried about it. Count me in the group that is worried about it.

Yep. He's the one WR that I don't want to see us draft due to his multiple injuries. AP has to nail this draft whoever he selects.
Agreed, even in a trade down I'd go with Boston over Tyson.

Agree. It's really bad. I get some pushback from some when I talk about how lousy Peters did as to the receiving crew last year. He's flirting with an even worse lineup than that. It's deeper. But worst starting lineup.

Downs is who I want most, IMO, he has the best chance of being of probowler in the next 2-3 yrs.

If Tate is there I would be tempted as he fills a bigger need, but Downs IMO will be the better player and is the most sure fire prospect in the draft.
