The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

It would be beneficial if we knew what sort of D we will be playing moreso in the secondary.

Minnesota didn't invest heavy in CB, but they did at Safety. Using that rational Downs makes a ton of sense at 7 over Delane.

I've made in the past similar points. But, if Keim is right as to what he said in a recent podcast (ditto Pauline) the team doesn't see it that way.

The other thing to remember, is that the ONLY time Daronte Jones ran a 3-4 defense, was in Minnesota under Flores. EVERY other coaching stop he's had has been in a 4-3, including when he was the DC calling the shots at LSU in 2021.

I dont necessarily think we're going to see a Flores clone. It will probably have an influence from Flores, but I wouldn't assume we're gonna see a Minnesota 2.0 defense.

The only definites for next Thursday will be me praying for OL to be picked before 7 and Love not going to Dallas or Giants!

I would not make this move but I saw pick 3 for 7 are 3th rounder this year and a second next year to move up for love. It appears cardinals really want to trade out.May be only way to draft love. Cardinals may just draft him as well. If they cant find a trade out.

We are just to short on picks to make a move like that. I would think we move down before we would move up for love.

I get the opposite impression, judging by his press conference and what beat guys have said but more so based on FA. I do think like any coordinator they will put their own stamp on things. But I'd be very surprised if the Flores scheme isn't heavily involved in what Daronte does.

In the articles I read about Flores defense, a lot of Daronte mentions as helping scheme it up.

Jones talked about running elements of the Flores scheme at LSU (before it was labeled the Flores scheme, its based on a U of Pitt defensive coach). And he inherited a 4-3 defense at LSU. He's run it both ways.

The edges he's signed are very 3-4 ish IMO. Chaisson and Oweh are not the set the edges types. If they run 4-3 scheme with those two at edge it will be 2024 all over again as to teams running to Washington's perimeter. But if you have some big DTs-DE's who can stop the run the playing 4-5 gap, its fine.

They also signed that nose from the Giants, and also Tim Settle. Feels very much to me like the Flores scheme and plenty of 5 man fronts. Will see.

But as to corner, I don't care what scheme you run, you can't have corners who suck. And they did sign Cross in FA. And if Pauline is right that they think Quan will bounce back, they might not be as concerned about safety.

Also as to corners, since in that scheme you play a lot of zone, off coverage, etc -- your eyes are on the QB so its ripe for INTS and that's more of Delane's thing than Downs.

The next question is what his scheme will look like. Those close to Jones have started each response by stating he’ll run a scheme that fits the talent on his roster, pointing out his varied roots in different schemes. He ran primarily a 3-4 at Bowie State and under Joseph and Aranda, then spent plenty of time running a 4-3 under coaches like Lewis and Zimmer. It’s all about being multiple these days, and that’s the expectation for Jones at LSU.

I would make that trade. Love changes the whole offense.

Give me a first no lower than #16, and an extra couple of day 2 picks and I’m trading out.

The only expectation being that Love is sat there at he’s 100% going to have a Derrick Henry type career.

Way too much hype on this draft class. The brave move is to bail out, not pick a ‘clean’ prospect…..

Well, with EDGE, WR and CB being the targets and hunting to fill those positions IF that is in fact what they do it may be best w/o trades to land, if we can:

#7: WR, Carnell Tate
#71: CB, Daylen Everette
#147: EDGE, Mason Reiger

If they did this, it would mean their highly graded players were all gone.
To have an additional 2 and 3 would mean 4 positions filled with young talent for 4 cap friendly years.
Just wish AP had a little better track record with day 2 picks

At 7 you would want love but he will not be there. You would probably get one of these

STYLES
DOWNS
TATE
LSU CB
Bain

Or trade down, unless it is love we probably need the extra picks. Trading down with jets 16 44 and another pick next season. If you could get 33 instead of 44 it would be great trade.

Maybe we get one of the other Wr or Cb. This team has alot of holes need to be filled.

Well sounds like the Jets will either take Bailey or won't.

:p
Two gun fighters line up across from each other.

What are the odds that when they shoot, the bullets hit each other in the middle?

50/50. Either they will, or they won't.

I am waiting for the Keim podcast on offense between being comfortable with a strong theory.

But a few things he's been clear on.

One of those overlaps Pauline. That is, they would take Styles and Delane over Downs. And he's said in multiple podcasts they dig Styles. And it least one Delane. That's very specific.

As others have pointed out too, Keim has hinted multiple times they dig Love. But I'll wait for the podcast on offense where he likely goes more into detail.

Tate is a tough one, not much out of Keim one way or another. But, they have spent time with him as to meetings. But they also met with a ton of other WRs.

As for you gut about them taking Delane. At least lol playing with the Keim tea leaves it takes you there because lets say its Love, Styles, and Delane. Good chance Delane is the one who is there at 7. Downs is likely there, too but Keim seemed clear on the podcast that he believes they'd go Delane over Downs. Pauline indirectly said the same thing.

Tate is the wildcard here. I don't have a good enough hint on him, yet.
Schefter has been on multiple podcasts and said he believes the floor for Love is Commanders at 7.

For Schefter to say that multiple times means one of two things:

1. Somebody told him. Either Peters or somebody who Peters told. Schefter is in the information exchange business. He's better connected than probably everybody other than Rap, and he's the news breaker for ESPN. He'll hear anything that anybody wants reported.
2. Love's agent is working the phones and doling out fruit baskets to literally everybody who will listen to try and talk it into existence.
I guess there's a 3..

I'd be absolutely shocked if Keim didn't have essentially the same take. They both work for ESPN. That matters...

Keim has hinted as others pointed out they like Love. It's just that his podcasts and info tend to be more accurate the closer to the draft we get, so I'd like to hear it from him closer.

I’d personally like to see AP play the draft and dispel this track record.

We hired a draft savvy and creative GM, right?

It's a good combination.

I am not ready to go full prediction mode yet. But for today, here's my prediction subject to change

#7. Delane
#71 Hurst or Lance or Keionte Scott whomever falls there -- if they like Hurst according to a Keim podcast, I don't know if they like Lance but its kind of the same idea, fast tall dude who can be a vertical threat. Both raw
#147: Prysock or Demmings whomever falls

That's what we thought. It's a shame he needs to dispell his track record.
I do like the idea of being able to fill 4 roster slots with the picks.

Interestingly about Delane, he was VA Tech and I guess spoke with D Hall. D Hall basically said that Delane left Tech because he wasn’t getting coached well.

If true, that shows a trait that you like too, desire to grow, desire to work. D Hall apparently likes him. I also wonder if his growth was slowed there at all.

Lots of variables, as always.

I could see Mansoor Delane. Elite corners are valuable, and he looks like one. Being from Silver Spring is a plus too.

Go 2 corners? Looks like you want a little heigth on the outside
I am a little surprised you wouldn't be looking to fill a different slot
