The 2026 Free Agency Thread

Such a weird situation.

Its like your best friend wants to start bangin your ex wife but you're still pissed she got the house in the divorce so you're gonna drag it out as long as possible but you know eventually the judge is gonna finalize the divorce and your gonna have to let her go.

How the hell can peters and Lynch/shanahan be totally comfortable with this whole thing.
Sounds like the owner is more pissed off than anymore that he’s shelled out a wedge of cash to Aiyuk for nothing in return. The front office might just be appeasing him for now. They also have a major issue with Trent so life may be quite disgruntled in the 49er camp at the minute, maybe the ownership just needs some air time for now.

Yeah I don’t see any sign of bad blood between these at all, just a posturing game by SF for now.

It's not that I think there is a bad blood. You can irritate and foster a sense of competition among friends. It's not like that never happens with me among my friends.

Heck Kyle flat out said he has no interest in help a team have more runway with Aiyuk -- forgot exactly how he said it but it came off like he doesn't want to help a team launch things early with Aiyuk to facilitate their success.

So he might love Peters. But not enough clearly to help him with Aiyuk.

Really…find that hard to believe SIP 😁

Re Aiyuk, there’s a side story to that in my opinion. Injury settlement, player insurance cover which impacts cash/cap, ownership ego, there’s something, I believe anyway.

Man they just got all of that extra money from insurance and voided Auyuks guarantees. They are acting like they are in horrible shape when they have came out of this pretty well

My point is it could be York..not Lynch and Shanahan.

Assuming this were to get resolved faster than expected and Aiyuk becomes a free agent, the fact remains that he hasn't played football in nearly 1-1/2 years and may also have legitimate health and attitude issues. I really am leaning hard against bringing him in under those circumstances so 49ers can delay as much as they want for all I care...

Valid concerns but almost the exact same thing could have been said about trent williams in 2020.

I don't think the 1 1/2 year layoff is that big a deal, you can argue that's 1 1/2 years less wear and tear as well. He likely hasn't forgotten how to play the position. They would no doubt do in-depth physical testing but his health status is probably the bigger potential issue. His somewhat bizarre (and self-sabotaging if you ask me) behavior over the past year is a pretty big red flag to me. I also think given his history, he may have a quite unrealistic view of his own 'market value' at this point. If I had to guess, that might be the biggest reason he doesn't come here. Peters would likely offer him a 'prove it' deal and isn't known for throwing cash at players in general, especially a big question mark like Aiyuk. Everyone assumes he will land in Washington and that may be what Aiyuk wants but that doesn't mean it is a lock to happen. I have no idea whether he would be a steal or a questionable addition.

You do have to consider time. When Deshawn Watson was benched he was considered a top 5 QB in the NFL. When he came back after 2 years, he was never able to find his way again. Now, that's only one example. John Riggins famously retired, came back, and became a Super Bowl hero. Still, that one and a half years of inactivity and recovery is the reason why no team will trade a conditional 7th and take on that contract for a wide receiver who was once considered a top pass catcher in the NFL.

I'm going back to the bar closing analogy. Aiyuk is the prettiest girl at the bar, but she might be crazy and in the dark light you can't tell exactly how pretty she really is. So, before you chat her up you need to decide what you really want. I think none of us are ready to introduce Aiyuk to mother and make marriage plans. Many of us are willing to give her a go for at least one night.

Put in football terms, Vet minimum plus incentives. In reality, a one-year prove it deal.

Yet Trent Williams was top 3 in the NFL at his position and Aiyuk isn’t even top 20 at his… can’t compare the 2 situations at all imho… also throw in the 49ers are a top notch franchise ran by very capable ppl from top to bottom, whereas this organization accept for the last 2-3years has been and was easily bottom tier franchise…. If Aiyuk acted this way being a 9er I can only imagine what baggage he’ll bring here or to any other franchise… I am actually glad the 9ers are treating Aiyuk this way…you reap what you sow and Aiyuk has been acting like a clown on top of his being injured…. I’d love to see them hold him till the near of training camp…. Act a fool get treated like a fool …

It does feel like the 49ers are having second thoughts about letting him go. I mean, if they really think he’s such a big problem wouldn’t they want to send him off to sabotage another team as soon as possible? Surely they must be tired of answering questions about it by now, and it’s going to continue to be a distraction until they do something about it. I suppose they can maintain the status quo for now since it’s the off-season, but every day that goes by they are getting more and more of a reputation for being petty.

Trent was no doubt more valuable, hence the reason he was traded for draft capital and not just held onto like a toy but both had been out for an extended period of time, both had some level of medical concerns, albeit trents were far less concerning from a football standpoint and both were disgruntled and not willing to honor the terms of their contract.

Trent certainly had more reason to be disgruntled but he was still disgruntled.
And aiyuk at one point absolutely was top top twenty probably top ten before his injury thats why he got that massive contract.

There are differences but there are also parallels whether you want to see them or not.

If the 49’ers just keep Aiyuk, and he refuses to play, then they don’t have to pay him, right? So they could just be super spiteful and keep him if they want. Since he no longer has guaranteed money.

I guess he could just claim injury maybe.

Or report and be n asshole in person
