The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

Just my two cents, which is worthless compared to some of the experts but I think APs biggest mistake was how he approached FA last year. Had we been more aggressive at getting younger and more talented at those positions of need, say like at edge, WR and so on, maybe that doesn't change the outcome of 2025, but it would have at least put us ahead of the roster curve. Sure, hes missed at some of the draft picks, but its a crap shoot, a guy might have a great combine, great measurables and great college tape, but nobody knows what's going to happen once they get on the field.

It’s this + the 2024 draft. Mistakes compound.

1) Ignore DeJean for a minute. If he takes even Lassiter or Kool Aid in 2024 instead of trading down, maybe he doesn’t feel the need to trade for Lattimore

2) If Johnny Newton hits, perhaps he doesn’t feel the need to go overpay Kinlaw.

3) If he grabs Milton Williams instead of Kinlaw last offseason giving him a stud upfront to wreak havoc allowing his EDGEs to look better, does he feel the pressure to give Oweh a $100M deal

DeJean is the one I just can't ignore, that one stings the most lol 🤦‍♂️

A couple of factual innacuracies:
1. Kinlaw wasn't overpaid. He wasn't even in the top 20 of DTs last year, and he's going to be in the 30s soon.
2. Not even an tandem of prime Aaron Donald and Warren Sapp were going to make these edges look better, we were running 4th, 5th, and 6th stringers out there every week. Armstong was on a 13.5 sack pace before he got hurt. We were signing Oweh regardless.

One thing that's not a factual inaccuracy is the fact Kinlaw was not a visible contributor in 2025 on the stat sheet as one of our headline signings.

He has been a consistent underperformer where he has been since being drafted in 2020 by the 49ers.

Not only did the 49ers walk away from him as a #1 draft choice and let him go but the Jets also determined the then 26 year old was not worth a contract extension there.

Last year for the Commanders Kinlaw amassed an overall grade from PFF of 46.8, substandard for a starter, with a 47.6 rate vs. the run and a 9.4% pass rush win rate.

Those numbers are just outright terrible.

There are vet minimum guys in the NFL that teams signed off the street that posted better numbers than that, so while he might not be a top 10 or even top 30 salary, he was down around the 95th ranked DT.

There's no way to put lipstick on that pig.

PFF graded Jalen Carter as 41.8 run defender last year. Of all their grades, DL is the one I pay the least attention to. Likewise, opposing OCs were quoted as saying the Kinlaw and Payne were the only DL the had to account for.

It’s interesting that so many opponents strategy was to double Kinkaw. Odd choice for such a terrible DT.

Yes, opponents noted that among the Commanders defensive linemen they indicated that Payne and Kinlaw were the only ones they had to worry about, I remember that quote.

But at the same time in context we are talking about those players studying the Commanders line they were facing with Johnny Newton, Eddie Goldman and Sheldon Day as the other DTs they were facing.

So, in that context which I believe is the one the players making the observation intended, the quote is more readily understandable.

It's not that these opponents were putting either Payne or Kinlaw into a class of player that jumped out at them when over the summer they looked at the schedule and thought about the one on one challenges.

Also, let's go back and ask why John Lynch and Adam Peters front office decided not to pick up Kinlaw's option and sign him to an extension in SF after using a #1 pick on him.

There is another question for you.

No idea. But one of those people did, in fact, bring Kinlaw back so...

But he was a solid player for us. A starting DT making just $15m against the cap is not overpaid.

Kinlaw ended up on the NYJ at age 26 which is just entering a player's prime.

Do you see former #1 picks that teams take years to develop and turn into prime level performers simply get walked out the door to another team?

And if Kinlaw was so key as an ascending player why did the Jets not retain him as they were in the process of getting rid of their older players last year and as you can see trying to retain younger pros like Breece Hall from leaving?

I see the point that with a much better DL around him Kinlaw may be a more effective player but with NYJ he was in fact playing with much better players including Quinnen Williams who is one of the better DTs in the NFL.

The Jets let Sam Darnold walk

Also, I don't think anyone is arguing Kinlaw as some sort of ascending, premium, All Pro level player.. The point is that he's not an over-pay either.

You keep saying the same thing over and over again. Just repeating yourself doesn't make your point any better.

John,

I think this is where the problem is…we were led to believe the organization would go on an absolute spending blitz. It didn’t happen in the first day, and as a result, there are many out there who think we now failed and should forfeit the 2026 season. For a team like Washington that has so many holes, capitalizing on the secondary FA market is sometimes just as important as hitting on some of the bigger names in the initial hours of the frenzy. Just my opinion, but I think we need to let things play out for a bit longer and then make a more accurate evaluation of how Peters fared in this free agency cycle.

I agree with you that day 1 seems to have fallen flat for most fans. But we did spend the 3rd most cash on day one eclipsed only by the Raiders and Titans (I think that’s right anyway)

That and that there are not better vet minimum/walking the streets DTs.

And your making off key observations like 'someone liked him' or 'I saw him getting a lot of attention from Team X in the game on Sunday' doesn't to me make for a very effective argument or evaluation of the player.

Who else was interested in signing Kinlaw to this deal? Most NFL observers thought Kinlaw wasn't worth the contract on its face.

If we are evaluating Biadasz on a mid-tier deal I only think it's fair to consider Kinlaw's deal which is also mid-level.

I am not maintaining that he is a top 5 salary and a camel hump to carry like Payne's.

None of that has anything to do with the statement I made: He is not overpaid. He is a solid contributor making bottom-third of league starter's money.
