The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

Don't they have no choice but to wait until after year 3 to sign him though?

OK, but if you are leaving yourself open to cutting Aiyuk if he pulls a SF type break down that means we are still going after a top of the line wide receiver as well.

If they are looking for a top of the line WR they are going to have to find one in the draft, if there are any there, these FA's are at best low end 2's and 3's.

I do think it’s possible, and a change in scheme and coach can only help.

I do however think it’s unlikely. I watched all those players play (or not play) for a staff incentivized to try to improve however they could, and saw very little from most of them.

He has to improve. The coaches are one thing, but the talent is another. AP needs to get his own house in order, so to speak, alongside what Quinn & Co. are trying to do to save their jobs. I’m not giving the FO an out just because I didn’t like the coaches.

His drafts have been underwhelming but the thing that buoys my spirit is drafting is extremely tough and even guys like Schneider and Roseman have had lengthy slumps.

When the GM search was happening, my hope was they vetted whomever the hire would be to the extent they could survive at minimum one coaching staff replacement and maybe more based on context. So for me, the warmer on his seat isn’t even turned on yet, though I’m not blind and acknowledge his swings and misses in several areas. End of the day, we hired one of the most desirable candidates in the league and he deserves some leash. And I’m sure you agree with all of that, just saying your frustration seems a little more palpable than I’d expect. It’s probably just messaging though and a heightened tone coming off this disaster of a season. Agree he must be better though. No doubt.

Unless you believe the report that Brian Thomas Jr is available

Yeah, we’re on the same page. He was my dream candidate before we were even hiring a GM, back when he was turning down opportunities to stay in SF. He’s got the pedigree, and unless this offseason is an unmitigated disaster I’d give him a second HC hire to prove himself if this staff crashes and burns. But at some point he’s gotta start hitting, that’s all. I too take comfort in the cold streaks that Schneider and Roseman suffer between foundational draft classes, for sure. But they earned the rope they’ve been given between those hits by…well, hitting before. So once AP has one of those signature classes I’ll feel a lot better.

SF does things differently, going into last season they were predicted to finish next or at last in their division, but they end up 12-5.

I think AP is the right guy, just have to give him time, only caveat is, has he ever had a high priced QB?

AP is a fucking idiot..we have shit for WR's or LB's and he does absolutely nothing in FA..Gets rid of the starting center for what? so a bum like Allegretti can get JD killed?

Overreaction or satire?

Locking up our LT, securing our backup QB, and getting perhaps the best edge on the market plus depth at DT and DB isn't that bad a first day.

No, he sucks..Both LT and QB were on this shit roster last year so no upgrade there..Did you not see this Offense last year struggle at WR and the Defense has no legit LB's right now..They gonna bring back old man Wagner?

We tend to have higher standards for conversation here at BGO. You can do better than this.

The bar for me (as previously stated) is to secure two top tier younger starters at positions of need, and some solid younger depth. We do that and free agency will have been successful. We are halfway there.

So whats the plan at WR and LB? All the good options in FA are just about gone..banking on Aiyuk to be the savior is just ridiculous on AP's part..This team is gonna finish in last place in the east this year.

Romeo Doubs is still out there. So is Jennings. So are Okonkwo and Goedert. There are still major upgrades available. If we get one I think it will have been a solid free agency. I think Aiyuk is a likely signing apart from those others. I don't know how the team will do in 2026 - I'm worried about all of the coaching changes first and foremost, specifically first timers at OC and DC, new schemes, another 1/3rd or more roster change. So I'm not particularly optimistic. But neither free agency or the draft are all about winning this year.

Remember when the likes Haynesworth, Trotter, Archuleta, Carrier, Sanders, Smith, George, and Lloyd were bringing parades to DC on the regular? Me neither. We are less than 24 hours into legal tampering. Arguably, an NFL roster benefits most from really high impact players at the following positions:

LT, QB, WR, Edge, and CB.

Peters drafted our QB, brought in and resigned a top 3 Tackle, and brought in what hopefully works out in Oweh to bring heat from the edge. At #7, there remains an opportunity to add a long term solution at WR or in the defensive secondary and essentially have your bases covered at four of the five above mentioned positions. For a team that lacks so much depth, I am kind of glad we aren’t throwing stupid money at just about any player available in an FA market that is certainly not an A tier class. Patience, young grasshopper.

That's true enough CH. But we have a ton of holes beyond starters/high impact players at those positions (and we don't even have the high impact guys at those positions yet). One of the issues I have with Peters and ALL of the short term contracts is that, sure you aren't wed to a bunch of players as you build, but you are also forced to turn over a huge portion of the roster until you find guys you feel ARE worthy of longer contracts.

It's hard to build a winner with a completely different roster every season.

We may still look back in a couple of weeks and feel we did fine in free agency. I just don't think it's been the extremely aggressive effort we were led to believe it would be so far (or if it was, it wasn't a highly successful extremely aggressive effort as we seem to have gotten outbid or were less attractive on some of the potential guys we wanted).

I think Doubs will unfortunately be a Commander in the next 24 hours. I just hope it is something like $15M a year

That was a decent start for me. Nothing more.

Reality check, we aren’t that popular these days. Plus, I think it’s very evident AP has a way to go in terms of establishing himself as a top GM. Not quite there for me at the minute. Maybe he’s just got a tough gig to cut his teeth with. Wonder if Harris feels his ambitions are being matched in FO performance.

John,

I think this is where the problem is…we were led to believe the organization would go on an absolute spending blitz. It didn’t happen in the first day, and as a result, there are many out there who think we now failed and should forfeit the 2026 season. For a team like Washington that has so many holes, capitalizing on the secondary FA market is sometimes just as important as hitting on some of the bigger names in the initial hours of the frenzy. Just my opinion, but I think we need to let things play out for a bit longer and then make a more accurate evaluation of how Peters fared in this free agency cycle.
