The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

OK, but if you are leaving yourself open to cutting Aiyuk if he pulls a SF type break down that means we are still going after a top of the line wide receiver as well.

Are we going to spend $10M (my plug figure between Keim and Standig) on Aiyuk and then $20M on another player at WR too?

That seems like a LOT of resources going to one position.

We still need a center, a left guard, tight end, running back not to mention we need IMPACT players on defense at all three levels.
I think yes. Because McLaurin could be in the last year of his deal, almost certainly in the second to last year of his deal. They can structure it so it makes sense.

IMHO the writing is on the wall that he's either extended next off-season to change his cap number, or they move on.... I think the team has all the control in this situation. I'd be surprised to see him on the roster at $34mil, and if he plays well enough to deserve that kind of money, the team is going to have success in 2026 as a result.

The reality is that whatever mistakes anyone thinks AP made last offseason, or even before that, are exacerbated by the fact that he hasn’t drafted well yet. If he was hitting on draft picks left and right, especially if he hit big here or there, he’d have bought himself a lot more cushion for other moves and happenings (signings, trades, injuries) to not work out and still be an obviously ascending competitive team.

If he starts drafting very well, everything else matters a lot less. Or put another way, actually: if he starts drafting well, mistakes in other areas hurt less and good moves in other areas help more. It all starts to feed into itself and act as a force-multiplier to a young talent pipeline.

All he has to do is start hitting at a higher rate and in a bigger way. If he does that, which is what his rep implies he should be able to do, the rest will work itself out over time and we’ll improve at a steady clip. You have way more margin for error around the org when you’re drafting well!

Has to be better than the alternative that many negotiating players choose to utilize “so and so player has removed any trace of X team from their social media” is a dumb common move that players make across the league each offseason.

I don’t know what this means because I’m old. Does this mean he signed or something? If so, this is great.
Could be something, could be nothing. Better than him trashing Adam Peters

Well, Tunsil is representing himself so I would think he is a fairly smart guy that knows how to poke an organization about the urgency to get a deal done without the Aiyuk type social media neutron bomb approach to negotiating his deal.

Personalizing it only sours the parties and makes a deal that much more difficult and take longer.

Riggins negotiated his own contracts with the team, in fact with Cooke directly.

So, at least to this point Tunsil hasn't done anything I wouldn't do - he simply answered the question a couple of weeks ago that the team had not yet come to him with an offer or a firm timetable for negotiation.

It means you can probably move on complaining about how they haven’t extended Jayden yet lol.

Why would I complain about that? That would be weird. Did Jayden come out and say he wants the bag this season? He’s not due until next offseason.

I understand your sarcasm, by the way.

But that isn’t the same thing. At all. In the least.

OK, so you save $8M by releasing Biadasz.

How much are you going to have give one of these other players to come here and play center? And will they be as solid as Biadasz has been over his 6 years in the NFL?

Some of these guys like Mays from Carolina have less than a year of starting experience at center.

Others were part of awful offensive lines on their former clubs.

No wonder why they might come a bit cheaper

I think you could pay Hennessey $3M next year and he wouldn’t be a meaningful dropoff from Biadasz and may be better if given the chance. I like that Kyle not only picked him up but gave him a 2 year deal off Atlanta’s PS in 2024

Some folks just can't take the waiting around for a normal negotiating process to conclude itself :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Ronnie Stanley in Baltimore got a deal done pretty late, it takes time when you are talking about franchise money.

What bothers me and is a legit cause for concern is when a player is generally NOT considered an elite performer but somehow has the idea that he is.

That is when you usually end up with an angry player and agent lashing out against the GM and team.

Trades often result from this type of process.

Luckily, here I think there is general consensus about the worth of the player vs. his peers in the NFL and the GM is motivated by the amount of compensation he surrendered to bring him to Washington.

It's actually possible that he did draft well, or believes that he did, but Whitt was so bad that it makes all those picks look bad. Same with Sinott on O. Maybe he breaks out this year. Wouldn't be the most surprising thing in the world. Also, maybe with the new defense guys like Newton are a total non fit and don't do a damned thing.

We will find out though, one way or the other.

He was a guy who was held back statistically by other options in SF, but really broke out in 2023. If you can get like 75% of that guy he’d be phenomenal for this offense. I’m willing to roll the dice but I’d want single digits on the number. Personally I think he’s on the AB84 express to crazytown, but willing to find out if it’s cheap.

If we get 75% of that Aiyuk in 2023, and Daniels gets him going like he did with McLaurin in 24, he might be the best WR option of them all this year, including Pierce, Doubs, Shaheed, etc.

I made that joke a week or two ago and was bringing it full circle lol. Maybe you didn’t see it.

I’ve been of two minds on the timing of when LTLT gets extended. It probably reduces the cap hit, but also ties up cash. They’re also quite busy at the moment so figured it wouldn’t be until after the first wave or two of FA and before the draft. Would be awesome if it’s done though.

Well, I think we saw that Peters did draft a couple of players in Sinnott and McCaffrey ahead of where they were generally slotted to go and in the end both players did look very raw in drawing reps on the regular offense.

McCaffrey found a role as a kick returner but in Round 3 we are looking for a bit more than simply that given how the rules on KR have changed and it's really punt returns that are more key at this point.

As I said before it's not that there's a lot of clear busts here but to me the 2024 draft is still Jayden Daniels and then mostly question marks.

That's a bit troubling to me as these rookies are now on Year 3 of their rookie contracts - usually you see guys start to carve out roles before now if they are going to be productive regular NFL players.

Last year Washington took Trey Amos at #2 and he came in and started the first 6 games before getting hurt. He looked like an NFL player from the get go and while he wasn't perfect it isn't too hard to project him to being a starting corner in the league.

We have seen NOTHING like that from these other players drafted the year before.

I think this is bigger than my “will they” concern. We just can’t let it linger. Having him in our pocket and the cap room it creates is great

Don't they have no choice but to wait until after year 3 to sign him though?

I do think it’s possible, and a change in scheme and coach can only help.

I do however think it’s unlikely. I watched all those players play (or not play) for a staff incentivized to try to improve however they could, and saw very little from most of them.

He has to improve. The coaches are one thing, but the talent is another. AP needs to get his own house in order, so to speak, alongside what Quinn & Co. are trying to do to save their jobs. I’m not giving the FO an out just because I didn’t like the coaches.
