The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

The combine for me has changed for 2 players

Styles and Thieneman. I liked both players previous and talked about them. I actually recall saying about Styles out on him on 7 unless he destroys the combine. Well, he did destroy it so am in on him at 7.

For me to take a LB that high he needs to be a special athlete. Thieneman was so verstalile and a fun watch. But didn't noticed to that extent his freakish athletecism, now that am aware he's a first rounder to me. I think it was DWinzit who also loved the guy and said first rounder. I intiially thought 2nd round. Now I agree, first round.

I started watching Notre Dame O last night and I’m going to post about those guys soon.
I know you brought up Price last night. There is drop off of course after Love in the RB class but funny thing is most boards have his workhorse teammate ranked 2nd or 3rd yet has drawn little discussion. I think if we weren't selecting so high and Love possibly being selected by Washington, we'd be hearing more on him. Heck Malachi has drawn way more discussions.

Yes sir, he is a late first rounder that jumped out at me every time I watched Oregon. He jumped out more than Sadiq, he was all over the field making plays!

I don't think this is the type of draft (where there aren't going to be a lot of QBs taken in round 1) that makes a trade down from 7 very likely. But I am feeling very good about our chances of getting an impact player at a position of need.

I don’t know that that should move him down people’s boards but if I were interviewing him I’d be figuring out why he went James Bond villain meets bobble head giveaway there
Clearly, he was trying to juke the reporter and was going for a head fake.

Notre Dame Offense

Watched the offense to start to get a game feel for Love, but knowing they had some other guys as well.

First observation: CJ Carr wasn't great. He's young. But... he did not help Malachi Fields. His deep ball is not great. He puts way too much air in it.

Malachi Fields is always open. I'm shocked he didn't get more receptions, or at least thrown to more often. He can catch the ball in the screen game, downfield, etc. The biggest thing is that he blocks like it matters in the run game. He is excellent there.

Anthonie Knapp, a sophomore LT in '25... That kid is a player. Keep him in the back of your mind in the next year or two.

Jordan Faison is a shifty player who can block and piles up YAC. Another receiver for the loaded '27 class. He's probably more of a day 2 guy, but he can play.

Jadarian Price.. wow. He is explosive, runs through arm tackles, is a capable receiver. At times he looks like he has stiffer hips as he can at times round some jump cuts on the games I watched. But then he'll hit an awesome jump cut. It seems to be when he gets to the edge his momentum just doesn't let him get the outside foot down as quick. But he is a baller. He has a ton of wiggle in the interior. Excellent lateral agility. I think he might be RB2...

Jeremiyah Love - I'll start with thenegatives I saw, and they aren't constant. It was "at times" but it happened. On occasion his pass pro is very high, which allows the defender to essentially shrug him off and continue on path. He also can, at times, run with a bit too high of a pad level.

Now everything else:

What makes him special is how he sees the defense. Against USC, early in the game, he springs a long 50+ yard run. It's inside zone split, so the line is stepping with inside zone footwork and the H/TE blocks the backside end. Love takes the hand off and goes STRAIGHT downhill into the frontside A-gap because he sees the USC safety rotate to the backside. The rest was history.

It's kind of hard to tell, but Love's eyes are directly on that safety. The second he commits to that rotation Love knows exactly where he is going. Fields makes an excellent downfield block here, by the way.

Love is shifty and moves really well. He is a receiver out of the backfield and even lines up as the inside slot at times when ND goes empty. He understands the schemes and knows where to work towards. He allows his OL to get to their blocks with patience and knows how to create his own holes by using his leverage to get defenders to overflow and allow his blockers to get into position.

It's funny, because I think people think I'm down on Bill which isn't the case - I think he needs development time. But the trait that Bill has that makes him standout and makes me believe he can develop and be a good back down the road is how fast he accelerates through the hole once he sees it. Like he's shot out of a cannon. That is a trait that Love shares with him. Love takes that up a level and sets up blocks and sees the defense and doesn't usually miss a gap where Bill is still working on that part of his game. In a way, Love is right now what Bill could be. If we could pair those two it would be excellent. Two backs who explode through open holes and allow for explosive plays. When one gets tired, let the other go to work. Especially as Bill continues to develop, and I think Love could help Bill's development.

I think Bill is shifter with his quick movements in a phone booth, where Love is more precise with his movements. So while I see them as similar in style they aren't exactly the same.

Love reads defenses so well and has so much patience. He's also an excellent receiver and, for the most part, a reliable pass protector.

I want to be clear here, I don't think Bill in his current iteration is on the same level as Love. But they share the explosiveness through a hole, which is one thing that I think Bill brings to the table - he's a home run threat. I think Bill might be faster, too. But not sure there.

But Love is a well rounded, intelligent, run through tackles, yards after contact back who can run for power or explosiveness. He is a good pass catcher and a good enough pass protector.

We all need a little more Love in our lives.

I think this solidified it for me that he is who I want us to take at 7 with no doubt.

I know most want AP to go defense at 7, but I'm with you. I think an offense with both JD and Love to have to worry about is a game changer. Even when we had a guy like Ekeler, well past his prime, our offense was at a different level when he was able to be out there. Having a RB who by himself truly scares defenses - AND Jayden Daniels? I think it would be one of the most impactful additions possible.

I don't think the comparison with Bill is even necessary. Bill was a great pick where we got him. He has potential. But is there anyone who is going to argue we shouldn't draft Love because we have Bill?

I wasn't so much comparing him for comparing him. It was to kind of do two things:

1) Let everyone know I am not against Bill, which I think I have a rep for...

2) To give people who don't watch college ball a bit of a familiar comparison as to how Love finds open creases and accelerates. The comparison really stops there, but I pulled up Bill highlights after watching Love and when he sees the holes he looks so similar to Love. Now imagine that, but with a well rounded back who is capable in all facets of the game. People here really, really like Bill. Love is Bill x10. If Bill gets you going, Love should be EXACTLY the player you want to change our offense.

To continue on my LOVE fest (I'm so creative), Love is the kind of player that makes Blough's transition to OC easier. If we want this to work, Love is the guy we need to make it happen. Period.

I like Tate. And we need a Tate. But not having a back that can create makes Blough's job more difficult even with a stud receiver out there because the running game just isn't up to snuff.

A strong running game will make the receivers we have better. And to carry over with the FA thread - make a splash and add a Pittman and even an Aiyuk to the roster and now McLaurin, Pittman, Aiyuk and a tight end like Njoku or Likely and Jayden has receiving targets better than most of the league.

I will try. My argument is the gap between Love and JCM is smaller than the gap between say Sylies or Downs and who would be playing there instead.

Dillon is another of that good safety class, should go late day 1.

He was one of those players that really stood out whenever I watched Oregon. He is very versatile, good tackling, in coverage, in man
He has been real good even going back to his Purdue days.

I disagree. Almost completely.

Yeah... I like JCM but I think we as fans wildly overpraise him. He was a great pick where we got him. I think he's got potential. But is he really a difference making RB? I think it's hard to argue he is so far imho. Will Love be? It's impossible to know for sure - but he sure looks like he could be.

You see what I see because that's what I said about Bill. I e seen 2 yard gsins6in the hole that he burst for 8. That's why I am so high on him along with the homerun threat. Your evaluation makes me feel 50/50. Half like Love is the BPA but half like Bill is a good back with great upside so why waste a pick there, especially with a solid backup in CRod.

BTW, did you watch Love against Miami? I know that someone didn't want him because he really didn't do much against the best team and just beat up on a weak sked but I know there is only so much a back can do without blocking.

I actually think that he is. I blame a lot of his downfall on crappie play calling from Kliff where for like an 8 game stretch we seemingly ran it straight up the gut every play and our interior got manhandled on most of those plays. There was no variety, no deception, no misdirection, and it was pretty much always out of the gun. Change that and I think that he would have looked a lot better.

I think you missed something, and this is where I wish I didn’t mention Bill. Bill doesn’t see the hole and doesn’t create his own hole most of the time. He is almost entirely reliant on blocking. That burst is what stands out.

Love creates and sees holes. So while Bill may do it once a game, Love will do it 10 times a game.
