Hope they can get gold for the first time in over 40 years!

That would be awesome!

Congrats to the women for securing gold. Now hopefully the men can follow suit!

I’m surprised that the Olympics close tomorrow and this is the first post about them. I’m clearly an odd 🦆 as I have enjoyed the games a lot. I guess I could have spent that time solving the Commanders problems in February instead.

Topic related- it would be awesome to defeat our 51st state for the gold medal tomorrow morning. 🤣

I am selective on the Winter Olympics... some of the events I find compelling (ski jumping, hockey, luge, speed skating to name a few), others like the various figure skating events, not so much. Will definitely tune in for the hockey final.

Major, major props to both the men’s and women’s teams for winning gold and sweeping Canada. 🥇🥇

The defense and especially the goaltending by the USA was epic, great coaching for that game plan and player execution. Canada was video game fast. CH, we love you but right now...not as much j/k.

Congrats, guys. This is a great achievement for USA Hockey. It was obvious to me that Canada was losing this game the longer it stayed tied at 1-1. Too many missed opportunities and while the ice was tilted in Canada’s favour for two and a half periods, they didn’t bury several point blank chances. They let the US hang around and as we know in sports, when that happens, disaster often ensues. I am happy for many players on the US side, in particular Auston Matthews, who takes so much undeserved heat here in Toronto. He played a fantastic 200 foot game and was a rock in his own end all game long. He really neutralized some of our top forwards today and I am glad success came his way.

I loaded up this time, recorded everything all day and then watched what I chose to watch Every night for 2 weeks. I'm with you and most men, I bagged the figure skating. I prefer events with a finish line not judges. Curling is interesting but that's a game not a sport.

The gold medal hockey game was one of the best sporting events I've seen in a while. I know enough about hockey to appreciate the skill and intensity that was on display. That first goal was brilliant, the last dramatic.

Unbelievable game. I am not sure any other goalie today could have done what Hellebuyck did. It was his day and USA needed him!

Wow. Canada has some excuses (no Crosby, hot goalie) but in the end, you play and what happens is what happens. Nothing takes away the first gold for mens hockey in the USA in 46 years! Loved the shoutout for Gaudreau too.

Awesome game!

I nearly had a heart attack and am just calming down now. That game was out of control great. They fought off a juggernaut.

Jack Hughes is class exemplified. Never made it about himself. Credited his teammates, saluted his opponents and waved the flag.

Congrats to Team USA, both men and women.

Not sure about the coaching, USA controlled play for first ten minutes and played ok for next ten, but after that yes the D played well and Helle was amazing but they were just unable to sustain offense and looked slower. I couldn’t follow all of the line changes but one of the announcers did critique Sullivan and said he may have wanted to shift his lines more for speed. So I did think he actually got away with some mistakes today potentially.

Yes but on the other side of class:

Disappointed with Mackinnon here. Thought he was better than that.

Yeah - you only get one chance at that kind of reaction and he blew it. He'll regret not doing the right thing there.

One random comment. I wasn't aware that the Olympics used that goofy 3 on 3 format for OT play. To me, that's just wrong. You should play at full strength until there's a winner and I don't care how long it takes. It's basically like switching to a completely different sport for OT. Why should just 3 players (I realize it could be more if it goes longer) or just a fraction of your roster decide the game either way? It just seems like an unfair way to approach it.

Hate the idea.

I imagine that the organizers want the games to wrap up without dragging on too late, so they set it up with rules to ensure a quick and decisive end. I wouldn't call it too unfair, especially for teams that have fewer NHL players on their team to lean on. They all get the same number of players, and nearly every overtime match had teams changing possession.

Either way, the Canadians had a 5 on 3 power play and didn't score. For this game at least, the overtime rules were vindicated.
