Daronte Jones and the Defensive Staffing Thread

7 man spacing means you can be in any alignment. Over, under, tite, okie, etc that employs a 7 man front situation. That essentially means that there are 6 base gaps. 7 man spacing covers each… +1.

That means some of the players need to be strong in their reads and coverage recognition. But where these guys align is of no consequence. It’s what they are responsible for.

34, 43… those are just numbers. You can do a lot of different things with looks. You need two A gap guys, 2 B, 2 C and a D.

From there you want these guys to flow well and get + to the play side while some players maintain strong backside integrity.

Also, base scheme doesn’t mean much anymore with the flexibility teams need with 4 and 5 WR sets

Those spread schemes are all part of your base. The more guys wide, the less gaps in the box. Thats why 42 and 33 are popular.

The receivers create new gaps with their splits. The goal is to put the offense in a bind and confuse their reads and protections.

Base is a weird term because there really isn’t a single alignment at any level that is your base. Your base is how you align to every various formation. Schemes then evolve from there.

Id suggest that he is the de-facto most important offseason acquisition, no matter what we do. No idea if hes going to be any good, but the offense has Jayden as a floor, the defense has wet sand.

It's a bummer whenever your team lands on a coach, vets him, offers him and they get rejected.

Yeah. That really shouldn’t happen especially with any college team.

I do wonder if not being willing to give him all of Donatell’s duties played into this. We’ll never know of course

Not a bad theory. It is a weird look, at the least. I don’t see this structure in many other places unless I missed something and that isn’t a good thing usually.

Good quick listen, would love to see this sort of coverage disguise implemented going forward. At the very least, Jones cannot preside over a secondary with as much miscommunication as we’ve suffered for years now. Smarter players will help but it can’t be just that. It has to be coaching as well

That also requires good corners/underneath coverage cause he's talking about issues as he progresses to the 3rd read.

Ain't nobody going to the 3rd read on plays where it was isolate Bobby Wagner in space. Or miscommunication on how to handle a bunch set. The rest of the defense has to be good enough for that late movement to work.

I wonder how hard that is to coach that for the safeties, and if they check out of that call if motion moves to trips on one side or something. That's definitely where smarter safeties would be important.

Whitt said he was going to do the same thing Kirk said was so brilliantly implemented by Macdonald. I recall this only because it sounded so refreshing at the time.

So what happened? Were our players incapable of pulling it off or was it a coaching issue?

I'm excited for the new look Daronte defense but the concept of exploiting the QB's typical reads and forcing him to adjust post-snap ain't all that new or refreshing to me now.

If only there were a stud safety who is also super smart available near the top of the draft 😁

This is the kind of stuff I love about the site, thanks for pointing this out. I remember a lot of the little tidbits from Whitt, the generic violent talk, all of that, but forgot about this nugget. Yes, it does sound similar.

I guess the good news here is Daronte has more of a track record as DC at LSU with some success, implementing a scheme that did seem to do that. At the NFL level, though, nada. He has been a part of a defense that was good at it, though. I think the LSU part probably gives me the most ease, but certainly having the NFL experience on top matters a lot. I just think Whitt was not ready for the role; in a big way, perhaps, similar to Bienemy. He also was not ready; I think he was not anywhere close to an "OC" in KC with the way things are run there by Reid. With Daronte, that's why the LSU experience matters so much; even if the talent level isn't the same, organizational concepts should be similar. I think that is where Whitt really struggled (perhaps), leading to those communication breakdowns we saw that just went on... and on... and on. The players themselves seemed quite confused.

Now, let's address the elephant in the room on that item: this may in fact be what DQ is talking about when he complains that the offense didn't give the defense enough to practice on with motion, etc. This may have led to in-game situations that the defense felt completely unprepared for. If so, the blame is not on Kliff, but it falls squarely on the HC and that should really be noticed by the GM and marked as a significant issue.

I really think most of us are convinced at this point he's going to NYG. So, this just makes me sad if we believe he is that great.

Don’t worry, they are taking Tate. I have this on good authority. My source is a drunken giant fan sitting at the bar the other night.

2 thngs:

  1. I think Kirk would step into a booth and be one of the best 2-3 color commentators in the league on day 1. He's always been a good communicator, he does know how to play the game, and he probably won't be as " HERE WE GO JIM!" as Romo.
  2. I applaud the Mickey Mouse polo. You go my guy.

Also, blah blah blah, Seattle does good things on defense, blah blah blah. (That was a really good listen too...)

I will say that recently it has come to my attention that Harbaugh is a bit of a jerk. So, he may be the type to think he is playing a grand game - maybe the more he directly mentions a player, the less likely he is to take him? My problem here is his history with Reed and Hamilton implies that Downs is the pick.

I wonder if he (Harbaugh) has any history of trying to fake people out (or the opposite, a history of open transmissions of intent).
