2. New York Jets: Arvell Reese, edge, Ohio State​

If a chance to select a quarterback presents itself later in the first round, New York should be ready. But the Jets need so much and can start here by taking the best player available. Reese has traits that are awfully reminiscent of what we’ve seen from Micah Parsons.

3. Arizona Cardinals: Francis Mauigoa, OT, Miami​

Mauigoa allowed only two sacks (and none from Week 4 on) and three QB hits all season, according to PFF. A consensus All-America left tackle for the College Football Playoff runner-up, Mauigoa could walk in and anchor the Cardinals’ offensive line for a decade.

4. Tennessee Titans: Carnell Tate, WR, Ohio State​

The Titans could go edge at No. 4 (Texas Tech’s David Bailey), but everything in GM Mike Borgonzi’s world right now has to be about helping quarterback Cam Ward. There are spots in need of upgrades all over the place, but the Titans are pretty desperate for a true WR1. Tate (or Arizona State’s Jordyn Tyson) fits.

5. New York Giants: Jordyn Tyson, WR, Arizona State
Tyson has everything necessary to become WR1 on an NFL depth chart, and a Pro Bowler. He was one of the nation’s most prolific pass catchers the past two years and is a complete route runner. If he rejoins former teammate Cam Skattebo and combines with a healthy Malik Nabers, this Giants offense would be radically improved.

6. Cleveland Browns: Spencer Fano, OT, Utah​

The Browns are starting over at head coach (again), and this feels like another situation that will not be very friendly toward a young QB, be it Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel or a new face. Cleveland still needs so much help offensively that it’d be smart to spend these precious assets on its core.

Fano is my favorite offensive lineman in the draft. He’s an outstanding athlete, with potential as a right or left tackle.

7. Washington Commanders: David Bailey, edge, Texas Tech​

Along with their offensive injuries, the Commanders’ 27th-ranked defense was a major reason for the team’s plummet. Bailey was a force on the nation’s No. 3 total and scoring defense. A unanimous first-team All-American, he finished with 14.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss. He would change Washington’s defense in an instant.

8. New Orleans Saints: Caleb Downs, S, Ohio State​

There may not be a better pound-for-pound football player in this draft class. Incredibly intelligent, explosive and absolutely fearless, Downs is one of the most unique defensive backs we’ve seen in quite a while. He could help a team’s culture overnight.

9. Kansas City Chiefs: Rueben Bain Jr., edge, Miami​

Miami led the nation in sacks, and Bain was an offense-wrecking machine. He frequently drew double teams, yet still finished with 9.5 sacks and 83 total pressures, according to PFF. Lined up alongside Chris Jones, Bain immediately would revitalize the Chiefs’ slumping defense.
 
That’s the NYT/athletic draft. Also of note they have Love falling all the way to Minnesota at 18.

I can imagine that happening or at least I can see Cleveland and New York by passing D Line cause they're really strong there.

Agree. I think the Jets and Titans are who we have to worry about more with respect to Baily. This guy makes a good case of why Tennessee maybe will lean offense instead.

I'm resigned to the fact that we have to go Defense with #7.... so AP better go hog wild at WR, TE, and RB in free agency cuz JD has barely any help
 
The linchpins on defense are pass rushers and cover corners.

You can't really establish a defense without them. So, I hope Bailey or Bain is available at #7 and we are able to work free agency to also add a younger veteran DE and corner to the room with Amos and Sainristil.

Well, we do have a solid OL (if Tunsil is resigned) and a capable although bit overrated veteran WR in McLaurin.

On defense, we really are starting over. We have Amos and Magee as younger guys with upside, Sainristil who needs to get untracked and be given ONE position to learn and play here, and then there are nothing but question marks.

One of the best ways of developing a young quarterback is NOT making him have to come out and score 30 points a game to win every Sunday.

Maye, Nix and even vets like Darnold were helped considerably in their rise by having capable defenses to help them and bail them out when they made mistakes.

No argument from me that the defense puts undue pressure on Daniels... that said, we need to give him more than spare parts, or we are wasting our biggest asset IMO

And, if you are able to get 5 good years out of a first rounder non-QB you’re doing really well.

I wonder how many first rounders wind up not making it to 26 with their drafted team.

We worry WAY too much about things outside of football.

That said…if you don’t think the guy is worth that then you simply don’t take him.

The draft, especially the early rounds, is essentially a variant of discounted cash flow analysis.

In baseball, there is a stat called Wins Above Replacement (WAR) that is used to value players. This stat adjusts based off position where, as an example, poor hitting who are great fielders tend to put up a lot more WAR than you would otherwise think

So you are optimizing for the football version of this while also considering the savings on a rookie contract vs paying market rate for the same performance, hence why premium positions tend to get picked higher

Thus, if a 26 year old guy is going to be an All Pro during his rookie contract, sure take him. If he’s merely going to be a very good player who you think falls off after 31, meh (relative to other options)
 
We don't have to necessarily address it in the first round but one thing needs to be made clear. Most have the Giants taking a WR. Chances are that Dallas will resign Pickens or get someone else great. Brown may leave Philly but Roseman will find someone. The whole division will have 2 great receivers. We have to do right by Jayden because he played with a horrendous group last year. We have to get a stud across from Terry.

I also really like Bill and CRod. I think that they will do great in a better system. With that being said, Love looks like a star. Putting him next to Jayden, combined with his receiving ability would give defenses nightmares. I expect us to go defense in round one, most likely still.

I brought up balhawk S Bud Clark a couple days ago. He had another good day

Defensive Backs​

Former TCU safety Bud Clark continues to make plays, wrapping up an impressive week. He had another interception during 11-on-11 and has showcased good ball skills in Mobile. The Raiders could use a ballhawk like that on the backend of their defense.
