The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

This might be one of the most throw-shit-against-a-wall mocks I've seen, pass on Downs, Tate, Tyson, Love, for Sonny Styles. Has McNeil-Warren as the 18th pick (most mocks I've seen have him 2nd-3rd round). Definitely trying to be different.

Anything could happen between now and the draft. I would hazard a guess that Quinn is absolutely not permitted to “promise” that the 7th overall pick will definitely be a defensive player. No way AP puts his name on that and locks himself out of options. You could do that if you had a top pick in a QB rich draft and needed a talented QB. That’s one of the few times you can get away with doing that imo

Yeah Styles at 7 seems rich.

That's my thought as well. The 7th picks is one of the few things they can dangle to good DC candidates. I see them attacking offensive weapons early in FA

The 9ers basically committed their full draft to Saleh to get him.

There just isn’t anyone out there left with the gravitas to make promises at that scale for

We have had some strike outs and interviewing some meh coaches. We may need to promise the 7th to get any decent DC, they may not be at Saleh's level

They certainly lack players. But this may be a good situation for a DC, if he can turn a defense that looked this bad around that's good tape on that coach. Of course DQ being on the hot seat is our biggest obstacle.

I just don’t like this strategy of promising to draft a defensive player. It’s way too early to know how the draft will fall. Let’s say for example Bain, Baily, Downes, Reese are all of the board… You telling me we’re still gonna take a defensive player?? We once again have 100 mil that could be spent mostly on D, so hopefully this year we actually do that. If anything we should assure the incoming DC that we will sign at least three impact defensive players in FA and give him some input on it.

I really don’t think those sorts of promises are being made. We’re at pick 7, there’s too many moving parts and too much can happen. AP isn’t putting his name on that promise and limiting himself in January. That’s just fan speculation

I do like Styles. But not at 7. Only in a trade back situation. I wonder if DJ is hearing something about us liking Styles. And that's where this is coming from.

But he sucked at drafting, we need someone else to suffer that fate

Harbaugh could go Full-Rivera and draft a long snapper with their first rounder. Technically, Harbaugh would also need to trade up, but I'm not greedy.

Jordan Magee played well right? I sort of assumed he would be the Green Dot when Wagner leaves/retires. Team still wants to use Luvu as this blitzing chess piece. Styles also seems a bit odd given the 49ers have found fantastic LB's in the 3rd and 5th rounds. They did spend a 1st on a LB, pick #31 (Rueben Foster), but he was a bust.

I don't know, maybe I'm way off base but it feels like we should be giving Magee a shot and go elsewhere. The next few picks after Styles (Love, Bain, McCoy, Downs) all seem more appealing. I haven't looked at Styles specifically, but maybe he's doing some really good work in intermediate/deeper coverage responsibilities.

Our new DC isn't the Vikings GM, or Head Coach, or their old DC (Flores). So his say in the matter was extremely limited, but he was with the Vikings since 2022 as the DB Coach. When Flores came in 2023 he was given a promotion to Pass Game Coordinator & DB Coach. He's been that way for all 3 years with Flores as DC.

Vikings Secondary Draft History while Jones was there.
  • In 2022, the Vikings drafted a 1st round Safety and a 2nd round Corner. Both of them were immediately in the doghouse, never saw the field, and were quickly off the team. They also drafted a Corner in the 4th round, who started for them in 2023, wasn't good, and then couldn't crack the depth chart in 2024 before being released.
  • In 2023 they drafted a CB at the end of the 3rd round (pick 102), he was off the team after 1 season
  • In 2024, they drafted a CB in the beginning of the 4th round (pick 108), but he died soon after being drafted and never played a game
  • In 2025 they did not draft a defensive back
Well, with zero home grown players, how did the Vikings pass defense find corners?
  • Free Agency, they paid big money to one corner (Byron Murphy), the other is only 5m a year.
How did they operate their Nickel?
  • Big Nickel, with a Safety instead of a Corner
What does this mean for our Defensive Needs?
  • At least 1 Premier corner needed (maybe he thinks Amos fits that)
  • Lots of pass rush
  • Versatile blitzers & versatile safeties
When do the Vikings blitz?
  • 1st and 2nd down they blitz over 50% of the time, they play more coverage on 3rd down
How do the Vikings blitz?
  • They like sending the Nickel Safety or a deeper Safety
  • They love showing blitz by the linebackers, but will back off one or both
What type of Coverages do they use? (Data is from 2024 and not 2025)
  • Mostly zone
  • They tend to line-up with a super stacked box and 2 deep safeties. Where one of the deep safeties goes after the snap varies, they want versatility from that one.
  • Coverage breakdown here:

Defensive Draft Targets that are likely valued a little higher:
  • Pure pass rushers
  • Versatile safeties that can cover decently 1 on 1, blitz, recognize route combos
  • Versatile linebackers that can blitz against both run and pass, have range to show blitz then go into a further zone responsibility
Defensive Draft Targets that are likely valued a little lower:
  • Slower Edges or DTs
  • Run First Edge at the expense of Pass Rush is not a plus
  • Man cover corners that struggle in zone
  • Safeties that are worse in coverage than run support
I would guess Reese and Bailey are the top wants, with Downs above Bain. When they drafted Dallas Turner in 2024 they did so because they thought his speed rush had elite potential. Sonny Styles is probably higher than we think (maybe DJ is right). Howell is probably higher on the board than we think (if we trade back he's a target). Faulk probably is way down the board. It's also possible the Vikings would have used more Man, if they had the personnel for it, but that's not the corner grouping they got. He probably has Delane over Hood as corners. I would guess McCoy would still be highly valued.

Good lord the Vikings are cursed drafting DB’s this decade, that’s terrible. For a Washington fan to say that, you know it’s bad

Magee had some splash plays but was overall meh per PFF (finished with a 55 grade). Luvu did wear the green dot some in Carolina and could potentially do that here.
