If Stapleton was instrumental is Conerly's development, as Reed reported, I find that a major positive. I am very curious why Johnson was let go though, just to promote his understudy. Maybe the understudy was surpassing the teacher?
According to Keim in a podcast, Johnson wasn't known to be good at developing O lineman, was more of an X's and O's guy than a teacher, Stapleton was more of the teacher who developed prospects

I mean, a player plays well. I like Conerly and he did well his rookie year. Who was responsible? Conerly maybe? His coaches? Which coaches? Who is a good 'developer'?

The issue with Blough among other things I gather:
A. Doesn't have the network yet to attract assistants like the typical coordinator
B. Veteran coaches might not want to work with a new-raw coordinator for multiple reasons: it might go south and they lose their jobs and or they feel its a little insulting working for an unproven 30 year old coordinator if they bring more pedigree to the job than the boss would.
I am not up or down on Blough for this season though lean down. I'll watch it play out before I judge. It does feel like a weird ride that might go to one extreme or another: it could be Kyle round 2 where all the young guns end up studs or it can end up comically bad.

Sean McVay was able to assemble a very impressive staff in LA in 2017, even though he was just 30 and not a ton of experience coaching.
I can tell Bullock is down on these hires. And I like Bullock but he's been as wrong as any of us on name that topic.
The latest is him defending Whitt at every turn during the season. So on this one maybe he's right, maybe he's wrong. You got me. Will see.
If am thinking sunny side up about Blough -- Colt McCoy and Ben Johnson make me feel good about the hire and to some extent Sheehan who said they were really high on him and that's a big reason why the moved off of Kliff.
If I am thinking negative -- Logan Paulsen and Jay Gruden lol put me in that state. Neither are down on Blough but they both seem to think it is almost impossible to hit the ground running in year 1.
For me personally, I can't really plant the flag either way. I am not excited. I am not down.

Probably. Though it might be a bit different as a head coach who at least called plays before and if I recall he brought his share of young guns with him on offense.

I know Logan and Gruden are speaking in terms of Blough being the OC today.
Do Colt and Ben talk in terms of him being a good talent or good for being the OC right now in Washington?

Colt and Ben have no reason to publicly speak about the challenges of the position. They'll talk up their guy and leave it there. I'm sure they're honest in their praise, and Blough may work out great, but of course Ben Johnson isn't going to publicly say it's a daunting job that he might not be ready for. It's not their business.

Ben Johnson only gave like 2 minutes to the topic but glowed about him, didn't dive into whether he'd be good right away or not, but thought he'd be a HC fast in the league. Colt talked longer about him, thought he was really smart and well versed with various offenses and would be really good.
Sheehan probably has the most optimistic take he said what he heard is that they had designs on Blough and that was part of the reason why Kliff was let go.

Tough with any of the new ones, they could hit or fail. Even the defensive coordinator search with people pushing Scott -- sounds good in theory but we don't know of course. Plenty work with good coordinators as their bosses and they succeed on their own or suck. It's a roll of the dice.
At a minimum Quinn should know better than we do and by a mile considering he's interacted with Blough for two seasons and interviewed him. But will see.

Wouldn't that be wild if we let Kliff go so we could keep Blough. In the abstract, that's what many of us have asked for in previous situations. We wanted to let Gruden go so we could elevate McVay, for example. We wanted to to fire Mike and hire his son Kyle (even though we knew that could never happen)
He had a lot more coaching experience than Blough. A lot. 9 total years of experience before becoming a HC, 5 years before becoming an OC, and he didn’t call plays his first year as a coordinator. He had his hands all over the offensive operation from different positions for multiple years before being handed the reins, and a lot more hands-on experience, and he had called plays, before leading a team. And he had the Shanahan tree connections (cronyism wins sometimes). Wes Phillips gave him access to Wade Phillips, who was an extremely experienced and talented DC and former HC to help balance out the inexperience of McVay, and help attract better assistants.
Really not comparable at all. McVay may have been the youngest HC hire ever, but he had almost a decade of experience working all the way up from college and essentially Quality Control coaching before getting that opportunity.
NFL Quality Control > college WR’s > NFL quality control > NFL TE’s > OC > playcalling OC > HC over almost a decade. A natural progression even if he was young. Blough has two years as an assistant QB coach along with his NFL career as a backup QB.
Feels very different to me.
