Daronte Jones and the Defensive Staffing Thread

True. I got the sense from the jump it was close between those 3 and perhaps Raheem was the runner up. But I sensed they were high on Quinn from the jump.

Arugably all three coaches made out well. MacDonald has one of the best GMs in the NFL building up that team. While Poles has been skewered some from going with Caleb over Jayden, he's done a much job giving Johnson weapons to run a high level offense than what Peters did here so far.

But Peters does have Quinn's back. And I agree I think they both likely bounce back this season.

I was listening to a Minny insider on a Galdi podcast just now and he sold me even further on Flores. He made the point that because Flores' backgroud was first in scouting he has a great eye for procuring talent, too. He thinks its 50-50 he bolts Minny.

Be really interesting to listen to Keim tomorrow, it gives him enough time to get some intel on the Gannon and Flores interviews.

Did not realize Flores came from scouting. That explains why he and AP are so tight. They came up together in the scouting trenches

We all knew our defense was awful. Watching the playoffs reminds us that it was often even worse than awful.

We need to get the coordinator right. We need one willing to attack. We also just need talent, talent, talent.

I just came here to post this exact thing. Biggest difference between us and these playoff teams is defense. Not even close!

Because both offenses have been godawful

This being the more important of the 2 imho… we don’t have the horses and it’s highly unlikely this off season it will be totally addressed either… far to many holes specially on the back end

So Galdi brought something up. He pointed out that three or 4 of the playoff teams were in the bottom 1/3 in DVOA, and then the top 4 defenses in terms of DVOA were also in the playoffs.

What his general takeaway was, you can spin those numbers any way you want to.

Our defense was terrible. It was better after Quinn took over. But we were also down all our DEs and most of our starting CBs, so I'm not sure how that plays in.

Relating this to the defensive coordinator search, well, whoever the coordinator is better be competent because winning with a bottom 1/3 defense is hard. Winning with a top 1/3 defense is easier.

Reminder: this is not a playoff thread, if you want to talk about the playoffs, great, please take it here:

This thread is for Defensive Coordinator search. So please let's try to stay mostly on that topic.

FWIW, I want a Flores, though he seems unlikely to come here. Most likely he'll stay in Minny or get a HC job. I love the way his defenses just create chaos and are unpredictable.

If they end up with Raheem Morris, they could do a lot worse. He's a very good DC. I just kindof want a new voice outside of the Quinn tree.

Does he mean to our coaching staff, or just in general that he should get a DC job with all the movement going on?

HogsHaven is more of a blogger, right? Not a beat guy with access, unless I’m misremembering

but on topic --
not sure I have seen it said much there, but I do not think Flores personality jibes completely with what they've got going on here. I think that matters to them too.

Conn, he's a lead writer for Hog Haven. They're not big but I consider them legit.

*Corrected* He's a lead writer.

I think you’re right, but I also wonder if they could use a little edge and intensity in the building.

Right, but he doesn’t have sources is what I meant. He’s not a reporter. I didn’t mean “blogger” as a pejorative lol

So his post about Scott is his opinion rather than a report, is all I meant
