Daronte Jones and the Defensive Staffing Thread

Keim recently said he originally thought the DC hire would happen early this coming week but as of late last week thinks it drags on till late this coming week or even early the week after.

Yeah that's because these HC positions are dragging and dragging. Feels like the Titans are interviewing like 30 people lol. The only team that seemed to approach it with urgency is NY, who treated Harbaugh as the Greek God of all coaches, and seemed to practically beg for him to take the job and now the NY media is putting in pen 12 wins next year because how can any team lose with Harbaugh?

The Giants to me are an all timer as to chasing Harbaugh, lol I'd think they'd give him 30 million a year if he insisted. But every other team seemed to be taking their merry old time.

Why bank on Jordan Schultz over Keim, Sheehan, let alone assuming Peters is lying, too? Schultz isn't Schefter. He's the same dude who did Terry's agent bidding last summer.

I can't even remember the last time Keim made a point repeatedly and emphatically and ended up dead wrong.
Absolutely right on Schultz. There's a reason he got the boot. Dude is a hack who is nothing more than the PR arm of agents.

With DQ as the HC, the more logical thing would have been to get a young up and coming DC if a more established OC

Why bank on Commanders reporters risking their access vs outside reporter that doesn’t need the same level of access to justify his employment? How did that story help Schultz or Kliff? Again I ask, would Sheehan or Keim jeopardize their own access to out Peters? Highly unlikely. Would Schultz? Hell yeah.

Even some lesser beat reporters have alluded to Peters, “asking questions”, and sweeping that under the rug as if it isn’t meddlesome. This entire hiring process this cycle, and tbh honest, in ‘24 has stunk.

Keim is never wrong because of access. He isn’t going to sacrifice that to tell the commanders fans that the front office is meddling. Just isn’t going to happen.

Did any of these guys (Keim/Sheehan’s of the world) ever once break the national stories of our illegality in the past? That should tell you something.

Btw, Peters job isn’t to be the most honest man in the sport. It’s to win. So far he’s 50/50.

None of this is to dispute you SIP. More so just defending my own position. Like I’ve said, I’m more than happy to be completely wrong. I’d much rather this scenario not be accurate than accurate. Just a bit of devils advocate.

Blame GTO poker. 🤣

I’m starting to get the impression you’re not too happy with the off season so far 😂
I’ve seen this argument made many times only to have Keim be right in the end. Shultz is also protecting relationships, but in this case the relationship is with an agent. Time will tell but my money is easy on Keim.

Keim isn't a liar by reputation or known to give false stories to protect the regime Neither is Sheehan. Heck as Keim talked about among other things Bruce scolded him for writing stories about the declining fan base when it was going on, Bruce called him in to tell him its BS, and nope Keim didn't carry his water. He's not always been flattering to Ron's regime or for that matter this one. He's balanced.

So even playing with your logic, lets say Keim made an exception because Peters is just an amazing source to him (doubt it by the way because Peters by rep doesn't leak stories or is uber chummy with the media), it still wouldn't be Keim or for that matter Sheehan's style to flat out lie about the story. They would just clam up and say nothing about it versus make up a story that's untrue.

As to how it would help Schultz. Yeah carrying stories for agents is the lifebood of getting scoops. How does it help Kliff? lol, use your imagination, its obvious, and we discussed it here.

For me trusting Schultz over the dude who just about never gets anything wrong about the team with also the 2nd person who just about never gets anything wrong about the team would be wild for me., Let alone also believing that along with thinking that Keim doesn't have integrity is double wild for me.

But to each their own, there is no way to know. But i am just trusting my instincts from being a media hound for this team forever. On a scale of 0-100 my confidence in Schultz over Keim is zero.

Going by Keim's takes, is there collobration between Quinn and Peters on most things, including this, you bet. But Quinn was the main driver of this let alone he didn't want to do it and Peters fosited this on him.

If I actually believed Peters is foisting coaches on Quinn, I'd want him fired, there is zero Peters could do to win my over in that case. That's dysfunctional.

I appreciate that. I don't take it personally, But for someone like me who is a bit lol too addicted to podcasts and scoops about this team over the years. And I subscribe to everything just about -- local and national. I've more or less lol don't trust anyone completely.

I have little faith really in anyone. One exception to that is Keim. And Sheehan would be #2. Sheehan doesn't report much but when he does he's very on the money.

So while I trust their accuracy well beyond anyone. No one is 100% right though. But the idea that would really happened here is the actual opposite of what Keim-Sheehan heard -- there is no way for me to believe that.

Part of the reason why Keim is almost never wrong is per what Cooley once joked about him, he waits until he gets 7 sources before saying something. And heck Keim among others subtly took on Schultz by saying be wary of reports coming out where there is an agenda.

But yeah once I did a zoom with Keim that he did for some followers on twitter, he went on about how the #1 thing for him is to not getting anything wrong, he'd rather say nothing then end up wrong.

Well SIP your argument is that Keim had direct access to the front facing executive of the franchise during the BA era. Most likely also during the RR era. I’m not entirely sure where his connection to access is coming from now beyond sheer seniority, but, he is frequently the first reporter called on in probably 99% of pressers. That’s his lifeblood just as clicks are Schultz lifeblood. They are in the same game coming from different directions of the game.

Also, stories about paper tigers like declining attendance is nothing compared to the illegal shit that was going on. Granted, Keim isn’t an investigative journalist, but he also wasn’t exactly a beacon of truth telling either.

Kliff has 0 jobs and likely earned exactly 0 new interviews based on Schultz report. I see no way this report helps Schultz at all. Why Kliff? Why Kliffs agent? He could be the TMZ of any other situation in the NFL and aggregate unconfirmed gossip from any situation, I don’t see him doing that. How did Schultz help Terry? He didn’t. Why would he? What’s his incentive? Access to one of the least credible agents in the sport? It simply doesn’t add up to me.

I agree with you it would be dysfunctional. Hartman’s presence on the roster tells me it IS dysfunctional.

Peters is just going into year 3. All of this could iron out and be great going forward. Trust me that’s what I want. I just don’t think Quinn is the guy. Honestly, Peters is catching strays from me because he retained him. I’m cranky about it and want to rationalize and justify that tension 🤣

Absolutely I respect the hell out of you and all you put into this vector of fandom. For years and years I’ve respected you and your positions. I want to make that abundantly clear.

No, none of us should ever completely trust any report/reporter. That would be a petulant self assembled echo chamber of disaster if any of us ascribed to such a preposterous approach with anything “media” related.

I trust Keim every bit as much as you do for all the same reasons. Much less Sheehan, but do still like Sheehan. Keim has worked his ass off for his reputation. He’s earned it.

Your final paragraph here, in my estimation, could be the problem containing its own solution. It just depends on how either of us want to acknowledge that.

I’m confused where you’re going about “illegal shit”. I assume you mean the Snyder scandals, but are you saying Keim put out false information possibly to protect his sources?

Thanks. None of this is ever personal, of course, its just debating football. But yeah I am missing how my last paragraph contains its own solution -- as to Keim rather report nothing than something that he's not sure if its true -- considering he's actually reported on this and said Quinn drove the decision. So clearly Keim felt confident about pushing that story.

No I’m just saying he didn’t break the stories.

Because Keim can know something and simply not report it. His incentive is access. Peters could tell Quinn I think Blough is the right guy. Quinn then has mediocre candidates interview. Quinn hires Blough. Who hired Blough?

So what I am saying is Keim won’t report things that that could tarnish his reputation. From his and Cooleys own words they’ve said as much. Telling the fans Peters was more involved with the Kliff/Blough decision than the organization would want known damages both his access and his professional reputation.

Keim said through the process that Quinn was a lot higher than people realized, so it's very likely he was that high.

I think it's been fairly well-established that while they liked Quinn, Ben Johnson and Mike MacDonald were their top 2 choices. MacDonald's own wife thought Washington was a done deal and this was all pre-Quinn offer and acceptance. They hired Quinn, so yeah, I'm sure they liked him.

I got no idea of course what Keim's sources or access is. But I do agree with a variation of Cooley's point which is he doesn't trust one source or two, he will hit it via multiple sources-angles because one person could be off or have an agenda. Listening to his podcasts, an educated guess would be I think he's accurate because he has give or take 4 angles. Someone in the FO, someone from the coaching staff, an agent or two, and a source with another team or two. It's a good conversation because I've never thought about it before but thinking about the occasional times Keim hints at his sources in podcasts, it feels like this.

I am used to the hey Keim has finally lost it narratives over the years and lol I can't remember everytime it happened as to the narrative. But the more recent ones were people were annoyed on ES when Keim said they preferred Daniels over Maye -- a lot of Keim trashing happened back then and some just didn't buy it. Ditto the Ben Johnson stuff referenced here. Ditto the Quinn stuffed referenced here. Heck just a little while ago some thought Keim was wrong and spitballing on the idea that Blough had a good shot to be coordinator.

As for what Terry's agent can gain by him pushing his agenda.

A. Making the agent look good for starters. You have the narrative going on at the time from some especialy among the local media that Terry's agent is delusional and isn't serving his client. How about trying to reverse that PR in the agents favor and make the case that its Peters who is the bad guy who is low balling.

B. Same point but on behalf of Terry.

As for what Kliff's agent can gain by pushing that story.

A, Yeah talking to any owner who wants to hire Kliff AFTER being fired is a bit weird as to selling that to your fan base, so the 5-12 team just canned this coach in a lower position and we want to give him the top job here! So lets get a narrative out that the firing was BS. Quinn loved him and never wanted him to go. But that dysfunctional Washington team with the psycho power hungry GM foisted the firing on the coach. So in short don't be botherd by the firing because it wasn't a real firing.

Keim knows far more than he reveals. He doesn't feel like he has to be the first to report every single development. It's but one reason why he is so respected; unlike that egocentric guy at ESPN who was paying hospital staff for info on player injuries (and getting them fired); and married a 9/11 widow, then proceeded to make her tragedy all about himself by writing a book about her husband "The Man I Never Met". Zero respect for that guy. Less than zero, in fact. Tons of respect for Keim.

Because Keim can know something and simply not report it. His incentive is access. Peters could tell Quinn I think Blough is the right guy. Quinn then has mediocre candidates interview. Quinn hires Blough. Who hired Blough?

He though flat out said it was Quinn who drove it. Your point if I read you is he somewhat agreeed with the story but put modifiers on it -- like hey he wasn't as involved as some think. Nope. He didn't do that. He flat out challenged the story that Peters drove the firing and said it was Quinn driving the boat.

But back on the DC topic, I really hope Raheem doesn't get the nod, but our options might be limited.

f I were Keim, I think this whole thread would creep me out a little

And btw - this is the DC search thread. Isn't there a DC media thread set up for these conversations? Looking at you skinsinparadise and Phantvm ...
