Music Recommendation Thread

A love song from Santo Domingo. I hope everyone has someone special with them tonight

As I was being born, this was played in concert to thousands

Coincidence? Maybe, Maybe not

Another good one from before I was born

I think that if I had to choose music before or after I was born I might have to choose before. Led Zep 4 was also before I was born, so was much of Deep Purple. All the Beatles and most of everything good the Rollings stones did too. 70's were great but what is after that? I might have to take before September 1972.

It's raining and feels like spring outside here and somehow utube knew because these songs popped up in order on autoplay without request or anything.

I never thought they were bad but never had much exposure to them

I can understand not getting exposure. Most of their exposure/fanbase is outside the U.S.
And their songs average about 7 or 8 minutes long, or longer. And they do a LOT of odd time signatures.
In fact, within the same song, they may change time signatures multiple times.
So it's not "dance-able" type music. Most of their concerts, the people just stand still, mesmerized. Then the audience joins in singing the chorus,
since that's a lot simpler than the rest of the songs, full of odd time signatures, and odd vocal phrasing.

I think the only song of theirs that was considered a "hit" in the U.S. was Pull Me Under, back around 1993.
Oh, another one was nominated for a Grammy. And some music in movie soundtracks
And the lyrics are really deep and sound like poetry

They are considered Progressive Rock. Sort of like Rush, but they have a lot more keyboards, and other differences.
They were formed by 3 friends who met at Berklee College of Music in Boston. So they're basically all musical geniuses.
But there has always been 5 members in the group, total.

They are still together after 40 (i think) years. Only 1 member is different from the original line-up. And they still look and sound amazing.
I believe every single member is literally one of the best in the world at his craft.
The current keyboard player was voted literally "best keyboardist ever", by a music mag, I think it's called Music Radar. And also by a highly respected classical composer(s)
Maybe one of the many reasons the band is so great is their diversity : Every single member is a different ethnicity. I mean, they all bring something unique to the table.

Well, that's a brief or not so brief synopsis.
I guess it does take a unique "taste" in music to appreciate them.
I encourage you to try them out a little. Of course their music has slightly evolved over the past 40 years, and I don't know your taste,
or whether you would prefer their slower or faster stuff, older or newer, etc

I plan to listen to them thanks to your write up....makes them sound very intriguing. You should post some or you favorites

This is a good starting point, if you've never heard DT, or havn't heard them in a long time.
One of their more simpler and popular songs.
One of the many things that's amazing about this band : While there are 5 guys, there are Zero weak links ;
The vocalist and every musician are all beasts at what they do.
It's like a "super group" without trying to be one, but happening organically. And in perfect cohesion - no "musicians on islands"

^^^ Watched without sound *game is on*, but since I'm all about hair flyin' around guitars & such, it'll get a listen in the morning.

Something new for y'all...

Fun Fact : The 3 wives of the 3 founding members of Dream Theater (Myung, Petrucci, Portnoy) formed the very first All-Female Thrash Metal band, named Meanstreak.

Myung's wife is Lisa Martens Pace, on Bass, just like her husband
Petrucci's wife is Rena Sands on guitar.
Portnoy's wife is Marlene Apuzzo on guitar.

Although I think only one of them is still with the band today, as it was formed 30 years ago.
Being the wives of each of the greatest musicians at their craft, surely made it easier for the ladies to perfect their individual and group skills;)
