Yeah it may be a very short sided 'solution' without a long term stability.

I could see him looking at it like an opportunity, a launching point as he gets back into the HC pool, if for no other reason than its 'comfortable.' Its 'possible' a HC position is not within the cards this off season, and coming here is more stable than others. If McDaniel comes in and does what he believes he can do, Quinn wont be getting fired... and if we do struggle enough to warrant the termination of Quinn, I don't think McDaniel would be the one tapped as the successor. At that point we're re-building again.

Unfortunately, to your point, having a Defensive DC essentially guarantees you're going to be cycling through OCs on this timetable. They either get hired away because they're good, or they get dismissed because they're bad. At this point, I'm all for getting the best possible option and if they're good enough to get hired away, so be it. Hopefully we can start building a coaching tree option similar to the Shanahan one, and start producing options instead of hunting for them.

Itā€™s true. However, even if heā€™s a rental (and this is already assuming we get back to having success as a team for it to even be a problem, which is a good problem to have and means it was a good hire in retrospect) at least figuring out a succession plan for a Shanahan-style OC is a bit easier than for Kliffā€™s fairly unique scheme. Lots of young up-and-comers around the league cutting their teeth in variations of the offense McDaniels runs, who would be able to jump in and use similar language and utilize the same pieces in a way that doesnā€™t waste the investment in them.
 
Atlanta is a great spot - they have one quarterback on a $184M contract at age 37 and another who has a torn ACL.

Good grief.

Weā€™d definitely get to see if they learned from their first set of mistakes. Sign me up. Weā€™ll learn something and either clean house or get back to where we were after ā€˜24.

Agree, McDaniel would be perfect. He also fits my quirky thought about teeming Jayden up with a workaholic like he had with Kliff.


 
On an aside, go Dolphins as to getting Harabaugh.

Between all of the reports that its an almost a done deal that he is going to the Giants, and the NY reporters acting like its the most plum job in world sports with the best roster you will ever find -- you'd think that team has been the Chiefs in recent years let alone the bottom dwelling team -- its truly been nauseating listening and reading some of their stories and heck even some in the national media echoing some of it. You'd think Dart is Mahomes. Skattebo Bijan Robinson. Andrew Thomas, Trent Williams. Nabers, J. Chase and their defense is the 85 Bears. It's the most nauseating off season narrative for me so far. I'd love to see the Giants spurned.

Personally, I view every Coordinator as a rental.

The reality of the NFL is that any Coordinator, on either side of the ball, that performs well and stands out is going to garner HC interest from other teams.

So, I think you have to view them all as a rental. I mean, none of them want to be just a Coordinator.

True, although there may be rare exceptions. I heard some years back Spags has no interest in being a HC anymore. Wonder if that changes this offseason, I haven't heard anything definitive.

EDIT: Whoops, should have searched first. Found this quote... pretty definitive.
Last January, prior to the Chiefsā€™ run to the Super Bowl, Spagnuolo acknowledged that he still had a desire to be a head coach.

ā€œI mean, Iā€™ll deal with that later,ā€ Spagnuolo said. ā€œListen, yeah, the answer is yes but right now, itā€™s all about Denver. I hadnā€™t even thought about that road until you just mentioned it. Iā€™ll let all of that take care of itself.ā€
 
I look at it this way cause recent pictures of him look way stressed out like mugshot pictures but gives him a chance to reinvent/reinvigorate himself with what we all believe is a super star QB. Those two together would be dope.
