2025 Washington Commanders- All Things Defense

I take PFFs rankings with an enormous grain of salt, but my eyes also tell me we need to figure out what to do with Sainristil. The man is having a rough year.

Maybe the pundits were wrong and his best position is outside corner, not covering the slot, despite his size. Kind of like how everyone knew Coleman was a natural guard because of his physical attributes, except no, he’s actually a tackle.

Smart people can be wrong. Unbelievable but true.

Keim did a pretty good job of convincing me that former linebackers have an edge at DC because they fundamentally understand all 3 levels of defense.

(I will, of course, ignore the fact that Rivera and Del Rio were former LBs. 🤪)

You don't stop eating a dish simply because one or two people prepare it incorrectly...

Listen to Keim for the information but ignore his opinions. His takes are terrible

You’ve posted this 10 times in the last 6 months, you’re a broken record. He’s always been more of a tweener, but his foot issues aren’t chronic just because he had a compensation injury on the other foot after surgery on the first one. Yes, that was annoying. No, it doesn’t prevent him from adding 10-15 lbs (if that’s what the org wants and helps his game) as you keep stating over and over again. Unless you’ve got access to his imaging, or are secretly his doctor, please stop posting this shit over and over again like it’s confirmed fact. It’s an idea you have.

Developmentally he’s been stunted due to the injuries, and that may be a reason we shouldn’t have been so surprised he kept falling in the draft, all the way to us. It was surely a red flag. But there’s no evidence that his injuries impact his current ability to grow as a player. There’s no reason to believe his issues are chronic, plenty of big ass dudes recover from foot injuries.

It’s mostly annoying that the injuries, missing his rookie camp, and terrible defensive coaching have stunted him so much. Now he’s (maybe?) a late bloomer and we still don’t have a good idea what he is halfway through his rookie contract. That’s plenty to be annoyed about with this draft pick without making up stuff about his inability to add mass or whatever due to injuries he’s recovered from.
Then you explain why a player Peters indicated he had on his board as a first round pick can’t crack the starting lineup as a three down regular on a defense ranked in the bottom quarter of the league.

Javon Kinlaw and Daron Payne haven’t done a lot this season to recommend them or to prevent a true younger emerging player from getting regular reps from the get go.

Newton fell in part because a number of other teams were wary of potential health issues so evidently some teams medical people were being cautious with him.

You’re right I am not a doctor. But if I see some other clubs pass on a guy that was rated highly just a few months earlier I do sit up and take notice.

Or you can stay at #36 and exercise your own group think and end up with a player who is still trying to catch up.

I don’t have a reason why he hasn’t lived up to his lofty billing, and acknowledge that his injury red flags were clearly real, and that the time he missed with us clearly delayed his development as well.

That’s a far cry from repeating over and over that his foot injuries prevent him from gaining weight or adding mass (if that’s even what they want from him) as you have done. When there’s no reason to believe the injuries are chronic in nature. There’s plenty to be skeptical about with this pick without making things up, I just couldn’t keep reading your posts on the topic (which sound factual to someone who doesn’t know better) without calling it out.

The reason I kept repeating that line was because I kept coming on the site and seeing folks talk about what Newton will be able to do in future when he gains weight and plays stronger at line of scrimmage.

I think he plays at 290 or so during his career and is right now the player you will see going forward.

To me that’s just realistic.

I don't know why everyone kept saying his physical attributes were that of a Guard. They're not. He's the most prototypical OT we've got on the roster. Wide frame and long arms, his measurements put him at what 80th percentile for OT's? Tunsil and Conerly are less than that.

One factor to take into account with anyone’s review of game film is that the reviewer does not know what is being asked of the players on any given play.

Hopefully (🤞) the coaches do, so that has to be given priority in analysis.

The reason Coleman is not considered a protypical Tackle is he lacks the flexiblity/bend in pass pro. Even though he has the arm length to sit back and anchor and still reach the defender with his hands in pass pro he doesn't have the flexibility. He ends on being forward at the waist which means his center of gravity is not over his feet and makes him more vulnerable. Because of that he probably doesn't have the upside to ever be an elite pass protector like a Laremy Tunsil.

Well, he’s not going to be starting at LT here anytime soon.

Third tackle?

Very possible he never plays at a higher weight, some dudes are just tweeners or undersized. My only beef is stating as fact that it’s because of his past (healed) foot injuries. Cool with being disappointed in the pick thus far, cool with being concerned he’ll always be small. I haven’t heard or read any reporting that the team would like him to put on weight but he can’t, so I’m going to assume they want to keep him light and try to develop him into a pass rush specialist who keeps his speed and agility at that size. Or they just don’t think he’d be effective carrying more weight. Will it work? Idk.

Perhaps a younger more creative candidate that he reaches out to? 😎
Well, we can only hope. DQ needs to recommit to not being the defensive play caller. When he came here he stated that he learned from his past that he can't be both a HC and DC.

I really like the old retread like Schwartz but would be far more open to a younger creative candidate. We experienced so many retreads that blew out with Tugboat and Whitt was just a fail

Gannon was fired by the Cardinals. Would be an interesting DC choice.

Whose sign, what sign, where the hell is my sign?
