The 2026 Free Agency Thread

I’ve said before, it wouldn’t be the worst thing to return him, he’s still a good player… but I’d rather not. And part of that is because it’s really hard to put him on the bench at any point barring injury. I’d prefer to either let the young guys step in, or get a stud in their prime that can play w/ Magee/Luvu.

If I were Wagner, I’d play one more year, get the tackle record, then retire.

DWinzit - totally agree about Crosby… would have been perfect.

I'm fine with Wagner coming back for one more season and being an everydown player.

We would once again give up tons of receiving yardage and points over the middle, there would be no quicker path to me giving up on this staff than Wagner returning to play a planned every down role next year.

As good as Wagner still is (and he's still pretty good) I'd much rather sign him as an assistant linebackers coach or as a linebackers coach than as a player. Not sure if he has any interest in that, but I think to move forward we have to take a risk of going backwards.

There are several other players who don't deserve not to be brought back that I would let test the waters. Jeremy McNichols has done everything we asked of him and been so much better than he should be. I don't know that I bring him back. Noah I, Jonathan Jones are both competent, but not better than depth. I want depth that can push to start. Deebo is a tough, tough call. I think they will want to bring him back because it's tough to trade away a draft pick and let the guy go a year later, but at this point, I think he's fine and I don't see greatness in him. Wylie is another I'd let walk. He's fine as a depth piece and I think we can trust him as a spot starter, but that's his ceiling at this point. The team really seems to like Trent Scott. He caught Daniels first TD pass. Probably not, but maybe.

I think I would bring back CRod if he'll take the above contract offer. I think he's been undervalued and that his toughness is useful. I think I'd give Chris Paul another go. Mariota is a good backup/low end starter. I'm curious about Jacob Martin. I like his hustle.
Yikes, I don't agree with a lot of this, or at least it doesn't seem realistic/feasible.

First, I suspect Bobby will choose to retire and take the decision out of the team's hands. If he doesn't, he has already suggested he does not want to coach. I'm for brining him back if he still wants to play.

Second, I don't know how you get better depth than J. Jones and Iggy on any sort of budget. Those guys, if resigned, would be backups and you need competency there. Our problem this year was some combo of talent and scheme/coaching. You have to think better coaching improves the situation to some degree.....at least to a competency level. Either way, we need to bring in another starter via FA (IMO) and we can't be breaking the bank on the backups. Jones/Iggy should fit that need.

Third, I don't understand signing Deebo for the $$ he will want. Don't know if he will get it on the open market, but he is a weapon rather than a staple. We need a staple to take care of Jayden. I'm all for drafting a WR with our #1 pick, need to protect the most important asset on the team.

Fourth, I wouldn't let Wylie walk. He s/b cheep to retain and he is good depth at 2 positions. IMO, we did a good job securing the o-line last offseason which (again) is integral to protecting our most important asset. Why put yourself in the position we were in during Ron's reign of terror? Seems like an easy decision to make that shouldn't cost much.

Folks are going to lose their minds about roster age, but I still don't know how we cure the pass rush issues on defense w/out signing some older guys. We could use our #1 pick on one, but that feels like something we shouldn't want to have forced. The team should bring in viable options in FA. The other option is to just acknowledge we can't fix it all at once and go into next year w/a wanting DE group. It might actually be the right call, play the long game.

I'd like to have him back as a situational player and the added leadership that he brings in spades. Think Matt Millen on the 1991 team. I agree he should have a situational role, not a full time starter.

We just did that and it failed miserably. This team needs a pass rusher. Preferably a young one. But I will take an older vet if he is a legit player. They people they brought in last year were garbage.

I'm not sure how much improvement we can honestly expect by bringing the old gang back. So yeah, I'd let Wagner, Iggy, and other good players walk even though it's neither realistic nor best for 2026. Mind you, what I would do and what we can do are different things.

That said, to the degree we can I would like to replace graybeard depth with young talent with upside. If that results in short term pain as these players grow into their roles I'm okay with that. We need to get faster, stronger, and younger on defense.

Now, it's possible bringing the band back together is the way to go if everyone comes back from injury 100%. Maybe we'd discover that the construction of this team's defense was on point, but I don't think it was. I think we need to blow it up. Bringing almost everyone back on a defense that has been terrible two years in a row sounds like a bad idea to me. If that means letting a few serviceable players walk... I'm okay with that.

What does that look like in your mind? I get where you are coming from. It really looks like that path necessarily requires the team signs some older guys to remedy the issue.....and our fans can't quit talking about the age of the roster. Hendrickson, Mack, Reddick, Bosa, Floyd, and Fowler will all likely be available and could help the pass rush. They will cost a lot and are old. Any one of them c/b a fix for next year, is the juice worth the squeeze? If it works, and its no guarantee, it will tie up cap $$ and increase the age of the roster. You are 100%+ right that AP kicked this can down the road last year and it was a complete failure. Remember, awful coaching (sorry Joe W, but it wasn't great) was a major contributor. There is a possibility we can have a better defense next year without making major investments at DE. If they go that route and it returns the same results (i.e., failure), how do we feel about the offense bailing us out with some investments that also protect Jayden?

This sums it up for me. I really don't have great expectations for 2026. If we are going to excel, it will (IMO) be on Jayden to lift the team again and he needs help. My feeling is the best we can hope from the defense is something less than a complete disaster, we just can't fix it in one year. Hope for some better coaching and some slight improvements in talent, but buckle up for some more pain. Best case scenario might look like 2024's defense.

There is another path which probably means investing heavily in an older DE or two, and also looking to the #1 pick for more help. Do that and grab some CB and safety help in FA could bring the talent needed to right the ship. That approach is an all-in for 2026 mentality, could work.......but might not and there is risk to that. Older DEs might lose it or get hurt and our rookie DE might not hit immediately (same risk w/taking a WR, of course). Again, feels like an all in approach and I openly wonder if the better approach is to embrace the team's strengths (i.e., offensive line, QB) and buttress those as best we can for 2026.

Not that he should play every down but a better defensive mind and better safeties would mask Wagner better in coverage.

Sure but I see no reason to purposely begin with a handicap under a new DC. Time for a fresh start

He is a guy who does everything well except coverage. Not that PFF is the be all end all but he has a 79 PFF grade this season. His grades in run defense, pass rush and tackling must be elite to offset what is probably a poor coverage grade.

The three down complete linebacker who wears the green dot is very very hard to find.

If you look at FA, there are a lot of solid starting linebackers who will hit FA but I don’t see many as surefire upgrades over Bobby.

It’s not that I violently reject what you’re saying in concept, so much as this year seems like a showcase to me in how hard it is in practice to actually bench a guy like Wagner for downs he’s not suited for. He’s so smart that a DC convinces himself the deficit in passing defense is outweighed by everything else. And I just don’t think it’s true when you zoom out. I think if he wants to keep playing, most staffs are going to have a tough time making him a part time player so I’d rather remove the temptation entirely and get some young speed out there and live with the growing pains.

I really think he’ll retire, though. I think the whole conversation is probably moot.

I'm curious what's your basis for this assumption? The MBA/investments? Did he say something I missed?

I think I'd be less surprised if we brought him back next year than him retiring.

Yeah, just my assumption that a guy who has played at his level doesn’t want to push it until the brakes fall off and he’s injured and greatly diminished. He’s still playing at a dignified level right now despite the weakness in pass defense, but I see him similarly to a guy like Tony Gonzalez, I just think he’ll go out “on top” and not want to play till he starts getting embarrassed.

Now that he’s got his MBA and he’s already started investing his playing career earnings, I suspect he’s someone who wants to build wealth rather than grind traditionally, which is also why I don’t see him going into coaching. A guy like that isn’t doing thankless 60-70 hour weeks. He’s friendly with Suh who has become a professional angel investor, that’s the path I see him going down.

I could very well be wrong though, I don’t know him and he hasn’t said anything.

There are other tells, too.
I know he reportedly took advantage of Magic's seemingly open door policy for mentoring Commanders' players who are interested:

I am not in the camp that wants to bring 35-36 year old players like Wagner and Miller back.

We need to move on and admit we are a building team that still needs to do the due diligence on younger players rather than holding onto guys that may make sense if we were a 14 win team where these guys were depth players.

The fact the team and Kliff spent another year depending upon Ertz at tight end at 35 shows these guys are way too focused on short term results.

Even if we did not have Sinnott and Yankoff on the roster I would have been looking to bring in a younger three down TE that could block at point of attack as well as be a target in the passing game going forward.

Instead of building for a consistent winning future we seem to be treading water with a number of guys that by age are not long for the NFL.

There is no future in featuring these players.

We already saw the Bruce Smith and Adrian Peterson swan songs, it was fun for awhile but it was symptomatic of a team that had nothing else going for it.

I don't know if Wagner retires or does another year. I think the problem is less that Wagner has nothing left or that his coverage abilities are nil, and more that there is not any major talent around him. I think there were reasons (on the field leadership, ability to mentor younger players, experience level, etc...) that Wagner was signed and I think at that time it made a lot of sense.

As with 90% of the conversations at the moment, ultimately the answer is better, younger talent. I don't know that in the short term we are going to plug in someone who is better than Wagner. But obviously he is not going to be around much longer.

This draft is deep at Edge. Especially in the first couple of rounds. I would stand pat and pick the best one left in their eyes at 7. Although they could trade back a little bit and still get an impact edge. Bain is probably going to fall a little bit due to his measurables. Not sure I would take him at 7. The other option is as you said, an older vet on a short term deal and kick the can down the road to next years draft. But I dont think the edge depth is there next year. This is the year to need an edge in the draft imo.

I am going to throw this vid here. Because there has been a ton of discussion about edge and DL here. It is a nice breakdown of Johnny Newton in the Dallas game. But also aloows you to actually examine the entire DL in that game. Notice how Kinlaw allows offensive lineman to get into his chest consistently. He was a horrible signing by Peters last year. Newton is developing well imo. Which makes the Kinlaw signing even worse. As Newton should have inherited Allen's spot outright. Kinlaw is going to be an expensive backup next year. Also wanted to add that Preston Smith had a really nice game as well. I would seriously consider bringing him back as a depth piece.
