Talentwise, I don't think the two defenses are far apart. NE has a stud in Gonzalez but no one else stands out as a stud and, in fact, most of their defensive starters are more JAGs than really good starters. However, guys like Spillane, Gibbens, and Chiasson are having career seasons

I don't think you are wrong.

I think the main difference is in coaching. There has been a sea of difference in the season-long performance there.

Yep and they did the thing of pushing out a bunch of BB’s/Mayo’s guys like Peppers, Duggar, Keion White, Jonathan Jones, Wise and others.
 
For the record, in our 2nd game of the season the Thursday nighter against Green Bay, the following players got hurt and missed the following game if not going on season ending IR.

Offense.......Austin Ekeler, Jayden Daniels, Noah Brown, John Bates
Defense....... Jonathan Jones, Deatrich Wise

That was a body bag game for us, but it was mostly on offense.
 
Will Harris got hurt that game too
 
Kaytron Allen is my first real disagreement with the RB rankings thus far and the only one I'd put in the 'could be overrated' category for me. The biggest 'could be underrated' is Mike Washington Jr Arkansas and perhaps Jam Miller Alabama.
 
All of this discussion is only related to the thread topic in a very remote way and I apologize for my participation in that regard. But to make one final point- I can’t fathom those that are so invested in their thinking that injuries and schedule have no bearing on results. The Washington defense is bad, really bad. Noted and agreed. However, context has a role and using the NE defense to make a stand is questionable, at best.

Removing common opponents here are the league rankings of the offenses that both defenses have faced to date:

NE- 3, 21, 23, 24, 26, 27, 29, 30, 31

WAS- 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 15, 27

Is the NE defense better? I don’t know. With the variance in talent that the two units have faced I can’t make a declarative statement one way or the other. They probably are because the WAS defense has been, uh, less than ideal, but it’s not an apples to apples comparison.

In fairness those rankings include the Pats and Skins defenses though. In other words. The Pats helped make those offensive rankings lower.

Their defense contributed to those poor offensive stats from their opponents. For example the Skins and Pats both played Miami. Achane had 30 yards against them. He had 120 against us. We also both played Atlanta. Who they beat. Atlanta had 435 yards of offense against us. And 288 against the Pats. So those games helped contribute to those teams overall offensive rankings. We help make them look better. The Pats make them look worse.
 
As far as I was concerned this was a 3 year rebuild and we put bandages on the cancer of poor drafts and bad injuries. I think this year will prove positive in the long run. Without the injuries we might have made the playoffs but we were not going very far. We are finding out where are players are; for instance Rodriguez, great rotation and depth for the future. Hamilton, great depth for next year. Coleman, great swing tackle. First round pick, great player at WR, LB, Edge, Safety, etc. I am looking forward to next year and maybe two forum mock draft, February and March and April to familiarize us with the available in the draft before free agency and after free agency.

The rankings I listed did not include common opponents (as I indicated were removed). Beyond that if our defense made the offensive rankings of common opponents look better and the Patriots defense made them look worse…that would be a wash, no?
 
On another note, given our 3rd rd pick looks like a top 10 pick in that round. I took a look at guys taken in the top 10 picks of the 3rd in recent years and there actually isn’t a lot. Also a lot of guys on IR - we forget how injuries derail many careers before they really get started

2023 - Tank Dell may have been the best pick but he obviously has major injury issues. Steen is starting for the Eagles and Garrett Williams is the Cardinals starting slot

2024 - Dru Phillips and Beebe are the notables. Other notables include Brandon Coleman, Isaiah Adams, Trey Benson and Trevin Wallace

2025 - Fannin has been awesome. No one else has made a notable impact. Teslaaa does make some great catches though

Conclusion - Don’t expect a meaningful contributor with that pick. May be worth exploring finding a way to sneak into the mid to late 2nd

Don't look now, but on consecutive weeks, Sinnott has had 90.2 and 83.1 PFF pass grades. Mikey has been up and down, and Newton played will (all grades in upper 60's) this past week.

That route Sinnott ran was beautiful. It is frustrating to no end that he is not getting more chances after 2 years. Could be he hasnt shown anything in practice. Some guys just arent practive players. But show up on game day. It happens.
