My opinion last season was sure Bobby Wagner made a lot of tackles but most appeared to be 6 yards downfield. Now he and the entire defense is a joke. Every team we have faced who was not quarterbacked by Russel Wilson has move the ball at will all season. Backs, tight ends and mostly receivers are constantly wide open. Wasn't Whitt some secondary genius? Well he sucks as a DC and needs to be replaced now. But sadly that won't happen.
Whitt was Dallas' passing game coordinator, they has a defensive back coach who some said was the real brains about that unit. but who knows? Dan Quinn running Dallas' defense brought a ton of pressure from that D line and that in turn makes a secondary look a lot better.
Where did this defense go wrong? My stab at it:
A. Joe Whitt. I wasn't impressed with him last year, I talked about it all summer. Feel the same now.
B. Doubling down on Lattimore at CB.
C. Regression of Sainristil and Quan Martin at their spots. Whitt and scheme part of that? Probably.
D. Wagner was slow last year, even slower this year.
E. Edge wasn't bad when Armstrong was there. It was OK. But without him and their depth losing Wise, Jean Bapitise its now really bad.
Do I think it can be fixed fast? Yes.
A. They got plenty of cap room to sign a marquee edge. Hendrickson?
B. Sign a veteran corner. Sign a veteran safety. Sign another edge.
C. Most importantly bring in a legit defensive coordinator
When you are counting on Lattmore and Wagner as your best players on defense and they both beyond suck in the pass you are in trouble. If you lose your best player on defense, Armstrong, you are double in trouble especially when the depth behind him gets hurt and you are playing washed up Preston Smith.
