The Jayden Daniels Tracker

In general when you have to make excuses for people then it probably means it's a thing. I worry about JD, there are a lot of smart football fans on this board and if you aren't worried about him having 4 injuries before he could make it halfway through season two then you're not being honest with yourself that his body may not hold up.

I hope it works out.
I actually look at it more positively than that on the injury front. If you look at the hits he’s taken, most guys would be out forever. Obviously there’s a shelf life on this, and can’t afford to continue this path every season. Which is why it’s imperative to put the pieces around him to lessen the pressing he’s been doing a lot of.

As for the excuses, generally there’s truth to that theory. I just don’t think he’s been as bad as some are making it out, taking all things into consideration. I’d be more concerned if things were otherwise going well and he wasn’t.

Clearly, you don’t want to defend Jayden. You’ve been crusading for a while now doing just the opposite with a sprinkle of ‘hope’. 🤣

I wouldn’t say crusading, more offering counterpoints, but sure I’m pessimistic. I’ve been here a long time, it’s a miracle I manage to sprinkle any hope.

Jayden’s rookie year was special. This year he has still been good, like quality NFL starter good, but clearly worse than last year and suffering injuries. It’s the same for the whole team really, beat up and in a slump.

There may be a few who think Jayden has played bad, but most of us who think his level of play has dropped from last year don't think he is bad. We just don't see him playing at a top 5 or 6 QB level like he was last year. This year he has been QB 15 instead of QB5. There are reasons for that, his injuries, the team injuries, the game scripts all factor in. But as the Kurt Warner video made clear he has turned down completions this year. That is been the biggest drop off in my opinion, he has probably turned down more completions this year.

Dude puts together a dozen clips from an awful all around game, and in some of those clips, he admits the scheme isn’t setup for success. He also has to color most of his comments with this ain’t easy, that’s open in the NFL (and some are a real stretch), etc. Let you tell it and there’s receivers running wide open all over the field and he’s blind and scared.

Found it ironic that Warner attacks Maye for basically the exact same thing this season. So a pocket QB with no moblity absolute hates it when QBs escape the pocket when in his mind there is a potential play to be had. The Jayden hit has gotten more attention because he's having the injury filled -- team disappointing season where the pitchforks are already out.

It's not that I think Warner did any of it with malace. But I think he's biased in favor of QBs who play like him. Jayden doesn't play in his style, neither does Maye.

Listening to Suter on Sheehan's show. He sees it somewhat like I did. Most of the time no one was open, on some of the rare times when a play was open, often the pressure was closing quick and the timing wasn't easy with the WR.

He also makes a key point that I wonder about, too. Jayden's lack of trust with this WR corp and the consequnces of it can have a compounding impact on his career if they don't watch out. On that front, i am not as hard on Peters as some others as to the job he's done so far. But I am on one point. The job done on Wr this season was malpractice and cocky as heck. He's signing dudes off the street like his crap doesn't stink on that position because I gather he found Zaccheus last year for peanuts -- so why not sign other dudes for peanuts and I'll strike it big because heck I am Adam Peters and I got the midas touch on WR, I don't have to swing big, etc.

Having said that, I do think Peters likely learned his lesson. I do think adding to the WR corp is the bigger code red off season need than edge. Both though are clearly the priorities. But WR IMO the bigger priority. I am also not opposed to a passing weapon RB like J. Love. But this has to be fixed.

Terry although believes he's the best WR in the country and isn't the typical injury prone 30 plus year old. But clearly he's delusional. Noah Brown is really a #4 type WR. But even pretending he's a #2, he's lucky to play 5 games if that a season. It's absurd to count on him as your Z. Deebo is a nice player but he's not a typical WR, he's more of a backfield guy. McCaffrey is a #4 type right now. Lane is a #4 type right now. They don't have a legit #2. They don't have a legit #3. And got no depth.

Lets take even a bad team with injuries like the Giants lose Nabers and Skattebo (who is a passing weapon, too) and their WR corp doesn't drop off a cliff. Slayton, W. Robinson. Neither player is killer. But they are more legit players than Chris Moore, McCaffrey, Lane.

If you have access to all 22, and got some moments to rewatch that game, which was his worst game, I don't think you'd worry at all. The clips I put up here, weren't AI, they were real, and they were just from the first drive and a half.

I get it Warner doesn't love QBs who run. He ripped Maye for the same issue this year, in a similar expose a month ago. But the run instinct as Suter explains (worth a listen to on Sheehan's podcast) is fostered by his lack of trust with his WRs and his ability to do it. And his lack of trust to his point isn't misguided.

lol, as Suter goes do you blame him for thinking things like Lane doesn't have enough seperation where he can trust throwing his way let alone he won't drop it?

But look of course there are moments he misses. There are moments all QBs miss it as for dudes being open. I know that from rewatching games like that for decades. Everybody leaves some plays on the field. If a QB sees everything everywhere, they'd be invincible. They'd be perfect. No 94 on their exams. Everything would be an 100. But life doesn't work that way.

But lets even forget all that, he was pressured on 55% of his dropbacks. How did Mahomes do against Philly under pressure. Mahomes barely looked like a functional QB against them -- if it weren't for some garbage time nice moments it was basically a disaster.

Just on an aside, Suter doesn't think Kliff called a good game. Seattle has certain static coverages and the team in his mind wasn't coached well scheme wise for it and didn't adjust in game.

Keep banging the drum for the WR room needing multiple upgrades SIP. There were a number of us on that last season and disappointed in the minimal upgrades that were made. Mentioning Slayton with the Giants was a great example. I thought he would have been a great WR3/4.

Of course they need to focus on upgrading our Jag RB and TE rooms as well as WR's. Lets hope there are more RAC guys who can have separate quickly, don't get hung up in tight man and are good route runners so JD can gain trust

This is what I was getting at where folks felt obliged to defend Warner’s honor. Not that Warner’s opinion has no validity, but from what I recall - he’s historically been of the thought process that everyone should play QB like he did. Not in a pompous way, but seems hard for him to grasp what it’s like to be a guy who can evade pressure with his feet.

If folks really want to get riled up, there’s a clip out there of some show with Aquib Talib, Gerald McCoy and Jay Gruden talking Jayden and whether it’s a sophomore slump or not.

Talib and McCoy are of the ‘no excuses, it’s a sophomore slump’ tribe like some of our posters. But that’s kind of their bit- loud, tough, brash- from what I’ve seen in the past. Jay on the other hand was like no way, give the guy somebody to throw to, you guys are insane.

It's a good point about Slayton

I just read a long article from Bullock. and I like him so lol hate criticizing him but to his credit he's relevant considering am responding to his point. His point is Peters did fine at WR aside from not bringing back Zaccheus.

look if someone wants to make the point that there weren't killer Wrs to be found. That's fine. It's not my point. Sign a Slayton. Even a dude like Keenan Allen.

It's not really that complicated IMO

A. You got your "starter" at Z. Is a dude that isn't a #3 on almost any other team. And he can never stay healthy. And he's 30 plus years old. that's pretty bad.

B. This is what makes it worse. You don't have a legit outside WR backup. And if you thought about it for 3 seconds. The "backup" is likely going to end up being the starter considering Noah's history.

C. You got an aging Terry not going to camp. And we are just banking that he will continue to be healthy.

It's bad enough that you set up the team where Chris Moore is likely your Z starter this season. They like to see hey we were counting on Noah and he got hurt. But he's been hurt forever including during minicamp. So in effect Chris Moore we counted on as their #2 starter.

But imagine if not only Noah gets hurt, Terry gets hurt then, too? That would be an even bigger disaster, right? Moore the scrub would be moved to X. And then who is the Z? Osborn? Gallup?

It all went down like that. And its not bad luck. It was a very viable possibility. They tempted fate and it blew up on them.

It's the main reason why this isn't even a mediocre team. It's a bad team. You got a backup QB playing with no weapons aside from a banged up Deebo in the backfield. Just think of the same thing but effecting another team -- where Washington is about to play Dallas where its Joe Milton starting and no Lamb, no Pickens, no Tupin. It's Milton with Chris Moore and T. Burks and J. Lane.

And as far as edge. I was more forgiving of their strategy. I didn't love their approach. They skipped guys I would have signed. But I didn't hate it either. But they basically doubled down on last year's approach. Lets do basically a repackged version of the previous season albiet it as their #1 weakness last year.

That's why am with Standig when I hear people say Peters was "all in". I don't think so. Not even close. Now, if Peters said look we wanted to fix our O line first. And hope that patchwork at other spots would hold up. OK, that's fine. i am guessing that would be his explantion. But I don't think they can get away with half assing it again at edge and WR. And if they do, i'll join the anti Peters chorus. But am not there yet. i do think they will go to town on both spots. Will see.

So, if I’ve got this right, all that Adam Peters needs to accomplish before the start of next season is:

Upgrade the WR position
Upgrade the TE position
Upgrade the RB position
Upgrade the DE postion
Upgrade the LB position
Upgrade the DB position
Improve depth across the roster
And sign a talented & reliable K with a strong leg

Dan Quinn needs to:

Improve the scheme and play-calling on offense
Improve the scheme and play-calling on defense
Restore the QBs confidence and comfort while teaching him to protect himself
Turn his hat around
Leave Larry Izzo alone

Is that it?

^^^ And we're nowhere close to knowing anything. The draft and FA are completely up in the air. So is the schedule for next season.
If we get through half of that list, I'll be impressed...no lie.

All teams have weaknesses. But I don't think you can survive where the trenches, QB are the problems. And I would say next it would be WR and CB. And one lesson for WR is if your WRs are absolute garbage it effects the trenches. I think you can survive average CB play and average WR play if you got the QB and the pass rush.

So in short, Peters has the QB and IMO the O line, too.

you can't have the WR crop be absolute garbage. I think fixing the pass rush would help the secondary. WR and Edge IMO is all hands on deck.

I don't think its that hard to find an average CB and an average FS.

They could use help elsewhere. But i don't expect really any team to be weakness free. MaGee is playing well at LB. I think they are fine when Wagner leaves without a major infusion. You can get a TE in FA without breaking the bank, Austin Hooper, Kyle Pitts there is a slew of them in this FA class if it holds.

IMHO if they just do this.

A. Go to town on WR
B. Go to town on Edge
C. Fire Whitt and hire a legit D coordinator.

I think its a totally different team.

If I just add just one thing to that.

D. Sign two guys to the secondary. Safeties are generally one of the cheapest and easy to find spots in FA. I guess they can draft Downs who is a beast but I prefer not to draft a safety in the top 10. Finding or even drafting an average level corner I don't think is asking for the moon.

I think all of this is doable. Coming from a dude who was one of the skunks in the party before the season -- didn't love the vibe and the preseason and explained why. Yeah it went even worse than I expected. I am VERY upbeat about next season.

I just love the backdrop of three competitive as heck people -- Quinn, Peters, Daniels being discounted, ridiculed, etc -- I am guessing its going to eat them up all off season, and I think they come back with a vengence. For basically the same reason why I didn't like the vibe coming into this season, in theory at least I love the potential vibe coming into next season.

I do think if they took WR and Edge seriously in the last off season even with the injuries this season would feel a lot differently. i am gathering Peters saw the big boy teams like the Lions, Philly, Tampa, etc have big time O lines and decided that it was a priority to match. He took that spot very seriously. No way, do I think he won't take WR and edge seriously, especially WR after this season. Also, I don't think they are going to double down on the clown show at the secondary.

The fact that they aren't just bad right now but embarassingly so -- I think its going to cut the wounds deeper. They will have over 100 million in cap space. They saw NE capitalize much better than Washington with being aggressive with their cap space last year, they saw Seattle overhaul their roster in one off season. I think they are going to be VERY aggressive this off season. Will see.

I actually do watch the all 22. I don't watch all plays but I watch it along with Suters game breakdowns on the Sheehan show as they usually give the time and quarter for the play they are talking about. So I watch those plays. I don't really watch a lot of the other plays. I do think Daniels is having more non-throws this year than last. I agree there are reasons for it, but the tape is the tape. The tape to an extent went against the narrative in my head--but there are too many non-throws IMO.

In regards to filling their needs this offseason it is going to be a bit tricky missing those 2nd and 4th round picks. Lets say your top three needs are an edge, WR, and corner. Add in Payne probably leaves after this season so you need a DT too. We do have 4 picks in rounds 5 to 7 and may get an an additional comp pick in those rounds but the probably is late round picks are usually depth guys (especially as rookies), not guys who will fix holes in the roster. Even assuming you can find a starter in the third round is dicey. If they get a high enough pick this year, I think they could trade down. I think this team will win a couple more games. Quinn is not going to be a lame duck coach in the way Rivera was in 2023 and this team has a lot of dogs on it who are not going to quit. I still think this team realistically finishes with 5 or 6 wins. But lets say they get 5 wins and the 8 pick. They may want to trade down to say 21 if it meant picking up a second rounder this year and say a third rounder next year or something like that.

The tape is the tape line doesn't sound like you take Suter's takes though that seriously. Because that's not his generalization.

You got 100 plus million in cap space. Tackle some of it there. As to the draft, either take a game changer early or perhaps use that spot to trade down and recoup some picks.

The draft in theory right now is perfect for them -- the two best spots are arguably WR and edge.

So looks like according to NFL there's no need for surgery so that's good. Looks like he will be reevaluated during the bye week. If we lose the next two then I would still rather he take the rest of the year off to fully heal, that is unless the medical staff gives him a 100% clean bill of health.

If your point is that saying the tape is the tape is an oversimplification, I get it, it does involve interpretation. However Steve Suter is not the tape. I value his analysis. Suter was a year ahead of me at UMD (though he redshirted so his last year was my last year) and I watched every one of Suters game as a college player. Was a fan of him, so I predisposed to like him. But his word is not gospel. I watched the Kurt Warner video and I could see what Warner was saying on every play he pointed out. I don't expect Daniels to be perfect, but he is passing up more throws than an elite QB does IMO. Plus having listened to Suter every week, Suter has criticized Daniels before for passing up throws. Like I said, I am not upset with Daniels play this year, I feel like he has been like QB 15 in the NFL, but last year he was QB5. There are reasons for that, but when I watch that Warner video, I think the tape doesn't lie.

What resource are you using to reference that number, sip? Spotrac?

I heard Keim talk about it on a podcast. If I heard him right, when you transfer the carry over cap space from this year to next year you are around 94 million. That's before making a single move. Of all you do is let Lattimore go, that's another 16.5. If you let Payne go I believe its 17 million.

I'd guess by the time they are through they will have somewhere around 120-130 million to play with.

OK but if you are citing Suter as the focus of your tape anaylsis I'd figure you'd also value his conclusion on the same subject you are referencing him. You don't agree with him on his premise or conclusion so surprised you even mentioned him. His opinion wasn't the dude missed opening over and over again but there is a reason for it. Bottom line, he didn't think it happened that often. That was his main point. You don't agree with him on the premise or the conclusion. The one thing interesting to me about Suter that I didn't think about previously is his point that Jayden's distrust of his receivers could have a compounding problem long term. I agree with him on that and I mentioned it. That to me is on Peters not Jayden.

I made the point here rewatching on all 22 before Suter did. So he didn't influence me. But it feels better when others watching the same thing see the same that I do especially when it looks so obvious that your eyes wonder is it this obvious? Heck I also made the point he did (before he did his show) on the defensive thread that I saw they were having their DTs play a lot of edge early and they didn't look good doing it, and Kinlaw specifically looked much better at DT than edge. He more or less said the same thing. I am not saying this to gloat. Quite the opposite. i am saying ANYBODY can rewatch the all 22 and see patterns. If you slow down the game enough and watch it frame by frame you can see what's going on. If someone is here concerned about Jayden after rewatching the games that way and still had concerns, I'd take it seriously. But its really hard for example to see who isn't open when watching the game in real time or by watching someone else's film reviews where plays are cherry picked.

But with all of that, my only difference with your point is really the idea that the point is even being made about Jayden this year versus last year. To each their own, but I don't think the point means anything this versus last especially in Jayden's case. Jayden's mechanics are flawless, his work ethic is 2nd to none. He works it to death. If this was Haskins (RIP) where the idea is he needed to take a step up but didn't. That would make me wonder even with context involved. But Jayden? I don't buy a workaholic with consistent mechanics regresses. So the variables involved -- the context to me is eveything. Just like I didn't think Mahomes just sucked against the Eagles and hence they got routed in the SB. the Eagles pressured 4, blanketed his WRs and he couldn't respond. Just like Brady couldn't respond to the Giants, pressure in the SB. Was it that Brady who destroyed Washington that season where they put up almost 50 points was just on his game that day but sadly against the Giants in the SB he was just off?

It's like saying I had to write a paper and was rested with 8 hours sleep the night before, I was feeling great, and had Chat GPT helping me along and i got an A, I killed it. But oddly, a week later, my kid kept me up all night, I was exhausted and had no sleep, and my electricity was out so I had no GPT, no computer and had to write the paper by hand -- and heck I got a B not an A like the other time. And someone would hit me after that and say dude its nice you got a B, but you are off your game, you got an A just a week ago. I explain what happened. And they go yeah that's interesting but it doesn't really take away the point that you are now off your game, you are not as good as you were previously. lol, my feeling if someone said that it would make me cringe and think dude you clearly never believed in me in a big way in the first place if that's the take.

You should post this 2nd paragraph in the Path Forward thread.

We all saw the pressure he was under. Does anyone have an feedback on who the worst offenders were on the OL? That is without a doubt the biggest disappointment of the 2025 season. We all thought line would be good, even a strength. Instead they are as bad or worse than last year's line.
