Random Commanders Thoughts

Conerly must be a hit starter and the idea when drafted was at a tackle position. He needs to hit
I agree but hes only had two starts, the second of which was on a short week, playing a new position against some of the most fierce pass rushers in the league.

Almost all Offensive tackles struggle a little early on, its way too early to know what we have in connerly.

For now im gonna rest on all the compliments he was getting about his talent in the preseason and assume that will shine through as he gets some experience.

Rome wasn't built overnight, and with how poor our foundation was its unfortunately going to take even more time than usual, but in two short years (at least from a talent on paper perspective) it looks like we've drastically improved our secondary our offensive line and our quarterback room.

Hopefully the rest will come with time.

I have been very consistent in posting that Conerly is learning a new position and deserves time to learn and grow. My point was not only that he must be a hit, so do most of the other AP draft picks, especially in the first 3 to 4 rounds. Hitting on 50% of them is not acceptable due to the situation he has been in over the past 2 drafts and how is has selected.

Also, we can't trade away any more picks for a while, need to start getting some youth and rookie contract combo to grow the team from within. Not growing mainly on one year contracts with 30 something players. Yes, we always will need a few of these contracts but need to begin to move away from relying on them.

GB's General Manager has been in place since 2018. That's 7 years of roster building. 7 years of drafts to become 'the youngest team in the league.' 7 off-seasons to sign free agents.

We made it to the freaking NFC Championship game in 1 offseason under the current front office. We're not going to win the Super Bowl every season, nobody does.

Howie Roseman has been in place since 2019
Eric DeCosta - 2019 (as a successor to Newsome when he retired)
Brandon Bean - 2017

These are some of the power houses of the NFL, and on most of those rosters there are obvious concerns, a lot of which actually mirror our current situation. Philly is about the most complete team of all of them. The other 3 have serious question marks at playmaker, similar to us. You know who doesn't have serious question marks at playmaker? Cincinnati who just lost their All Pro, MVP QB for the season. New York who is largely regarded as the worst in the division. Dallas who just traded away a top 3 player in the NFL.

Free Agents change every year. Draft players change every year. Players get older. Players have changes of heart. There are 1000000% factors that determine the success and failure of a SINGLE player, far beyond the measurables. Weeding your way through the 'best' 53 of them to make up a roster is a process. There are 'templates' but no step by step instructions on the living organism that is a football team. Something that works for Team A, doesn't necessarily work for Team B. Player X may be great on Team F, but there's a clash with the equipment options on Team M, which effects something down the line.

We went 30 years in a baron wasteland of 'General Managers.' This one guy has already done more in 20 months than we've seen in 20 years. Let's let him cook a bit.

Great write up. Very well said. Let's enjoy the process. Know there are ups and downs. Hope to keep making the playoffs. Once in the playoffs any team can make a run. And keep building a better team each year. That's what we all can hope for. But it will take time. We have a franchise QB that isn't a head case. Someone we can proudly boast about. Things are great and im going to just live in the moment and enjoy every week. Don't take it for granted.

There's some worry but i also think theres a little pessimistic cherry picking going on too, compounded by the fact we just got our asses kicked.

Lets do some optimistic cherry picking.

There were 6 picks in the top 100.

Jayden by all accounts is a superstar, that could change we've seen it before but from what we know now he's a grand slam pick.

Newton is what you could expect to see from an early second round pick, he's not tearing it up like we'd obviously like to see but he's contributing and he's showing flashes, time will tell.

Sainristil is by all accounts a big hit, he played inside and outside his rookie year looking great, had 2 picks in the lions game that were game changers, hes being overshadowed by the fact that we traded away the chance to get cooper dejean but he's on the path to being a stud, maybe not a grand slam but a two run homer for sure.

Sinnot so far looks like a bust but as has been stated things could change.

Coleman had a solid rookie year especially being asked to start at left tackle as a 3rd round rookie, he held his own and theres no reason to believe he wont be a solid b plus type guard as he transitions to his new position, at this point id call him a good pick.

Mccaffrey so far has been a disappointment but as has been stated he was a qb in college and a late position switch almost always takes years to get positive results, look at logan thomas, he didn’t do squat until his 5th year in the league.

So, out of the 6 picks, as of right now just 19 games in, 3 are hits, one is up in the air and 2 are busts, thats not a bad hit rate for any gm despite them all being top 100, even the first round is 50/50 and after that the odds drop dramatically every round.

Some of the bad vibes are probably associated with the fact that we're briefly forgetting just how bad rivera left this roster because he couldn't draft at all, quite possibly the worst 4 year stretch in the history of the nfl and thats not hyperbole.

If we had a decent roster where these guys weren't all being expected to come in and be immediate superstars for us i believe we'd be a little happier with these results.

I’m not panicking, and plenty of your points are valid. But I don’t think it’s a coincidence that your post reads as super defensive, having to lay out an alibi for a bunch of these guys. I agree, individually each of these picks is defensible and there’s reason for hope. That loses sway when you zoom out and look at the group as a whole, though.

If the Ravens had this haul, would we expect these players to play out how they have so far? That’s kinda what we aspire to be. And yeah, a strong ecosystem and surrounding talent helps guys develop and contribute early on within their skill sets, but it’s not like some of these guys are being forced onto the field too early and being ruined. The issue with some of them is that they’re being developed like we’re a team with time to kill and talent to spare, and they still aren’t doing anything even with runway to grow and low expectations from the staff, seemingly.

Sainristill is fine. Pretty good so far. Nothing special about him yet and he actually seems worse at the position we drafted him to play than he is the position he was forced to play. But then we arranged the roster this offseason around him going back to his intended position, the slot. But either way, a solid player we can use as part of our build. He had a signature game against the Lions, that’s true. Overall hasn’t been an impact player. Certainly not on track to be the best slot CB in the league, which was kind of the billing. But there’s hope.

Newton is fine. He’s definitely not living up to the billing of “he was a 1st round talent who was falling and we actually tried to trade up for him because it was so important we get him”, which is the literal narrative from the FO. He’s probably the biggest disappointment despite being a usable player, because when you spend high draft picks on DL you don’t want them to be rotational guys that you could get in FA for $13-16M/year. You want an impact player. Maybe he’s growing into that, he had 5 pressures the other day. But still not a home run.

Sinnott. Nothing needs to be said, he could still turn out to be something but when you draft a TE in round 2 for your franchise QB that’s not what you envision being the roadmap.

Coleman. Agreed, good pick given we waited so long to take an OL, he’ll start for a long time somewhere along the line as we get things settled. Likely right where he’s playing now. Legitimately good pick.

McCaffrey. Not much to say. Nepotism pick to the extreme, I think AP was feeling himself a bit and considered this a “luxury” pick, which is poisonous thinking. Again, not the outcome you want when you draft a skill position player in the 3rd round to go with your franchise QB. Raw? Okay, then that’s its own criticism given our young QB needs weapons to help him develop. The Raiders took a 6’5” Megatron style raw freak in the 4th round this year that no one thought was ready, and he won an outside starting job. He’s still raw, but will probably posterize at least one of our DB’s this coming week. McCaffrey is raw…if he develops and becomes a useful player, with his projected skill set, what’s his realistic upside? Chris Hogan with Brady? The high high hope is Edelman but nobody really thinks that’s happening. Slightly more juiced Crowder? It’s just not a good pick at that point in the draft. Makes me question the process more than any of the other picks, despite being the latest of the 5 I’m talking about.

Five picks with potential foundational pedigree, no slam dunk studs. It happens to every FO but I’m just saying, it’s worrying.

I’m not actually that worried, grand scheme, so in response to your defensive post I’m now coming across as overly aggressive to make my point lol. But zooming back further, the whole thing is just “anyone who isn’t a little bit worried is crazy”.

“magic with most if not all picks.”

Well, considering roughly only 30% of all picks make a roster, you may want to go to a Penn and Teller show if your expectation is magic.

Hell, it’s fairly well known that ~50% of 1st round picks are considered busts. Expecting “all” picks to hit is a mighty high bar but have at it.

Also, AP was hired into a freak show in January of ‘24. 18 whole months. He’s just now going into season 2 of his tenure. You can’t even really judge the results of the players that he’s drafted yet. I mean, I guess you can. If you want. So yeah, have at it.

I get what you're saying, its kind of a glass is half full versus half empty thing going on and i definitely feel the devils advocate vibe coming from your argument which i can respect i do it almost as an occupation.

Im not sure why you aren't acknowledging that its 6 picks and one is a slam dunk superstar, at least so far he is, that is where my cherry picking reference came from because if you take jayden out of the equation i agree the draft looks much worse but its not fair to A.P.

Yeah i have to second this.

"magic with most if not all of his picks" for what? To take the next step? To repeat last years success? To keep his job? What's the benchmark?

AP would have to bat .1000 (which NOBODY does btw) in order to solve every problem on the roster in about 3 off seasons, but that's just not realistic. It's hard to be 'right' on a prospect, let alone be right on all of them. 32 teams didn't think Tom Brady was going to be what he ended up being. Even if New England felt he would, they wouldn't have waited so long. 32 teams also though Chase Young was going to be the next transcendent pass rusher. Who's to say if he goes to Philly, Detroit, Buffalo, or wherever, would his trajectory be different? If we had drafted Tom Brady to Washington, would we be the team with the most Super Bowl wins in NFL History? I think we all know the answer.

There are only a handful of players drafted that are able to be starters day 1. Most of them are chosen based on a planned development. Look no further than the last two MVPs. Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. Both were wildcard prospects coming out of college, both were not at their peak when they started.

There is a lot of shit to shake off this franchise.

Watching GBs LBers Walker and Turner, two guys I loved in the draft, play off each other so well took a couple years. Having our young LBers sit behind Wags and Luvu is going to be advantageous for us going forward.

I've been plenty critical of Peters, but I know it takes time.

Oh apologies, I can see how removing Jayden may make it seem overly cherry-picking/negative.

My logic was that the entire regime is going to sink or swim on the Jayden pick regardless, so I grade it separately. That’s a pass/fail decision point, not counted towards their “GPA” bc if they got that pick wrong none of the rest matter. By getting that pick correct, they’ve given themselves a future where the rest of their picks can actually matter now, and are worth digging into. If that makes sense.

Obviously it’s the best thing AP has done and the soundest decision he’s made, and he deserves credit given many people wanted Maye (or even McCarthy) and many people wished we could get Caleb. So I don’t mean to “not count” that pick against his record, it wasn’t meant to be manipulative. It just wasn’t the point of my post, consider that pick the decision that unlocks the rest of his tenure here.

I just was really only talking about the five 2nd/3rd round picks bc those are the “roster building” rounds for playoff teams and I thought it went without saying that he nailed the #2 overall QB pick. Because of that, he needs these crucial foundation picks to act as force multipliers.

Rest assured that I give him tons of credit and prestige from the Jayden Daniels home run. It makes me want to hold his other picks to an even higher standard because it elevates us to a franchise that has a potential Super Bowl future, not an also-ran. 50% of 1st rounders bust, 65% of 2nd rounders, 70% of 3rd rounders, whatever. But those are averages. I don’t want to compare AP to an average, because that includes bad teams and bad GM’s and bad ownership, that average bust rate includes the people who do poorly enough to get fired. I want to compare AP to who I see as his competitors, his contemporary rivals who ARE nailing these picks and drafting studs that work with their franchise QB’s to carry their rosters. Right now that’s looking like the Ravens, the Eagles, in terms of talent accumulation maybe the Lions, maybe Packers. Super Bowl contenders in their windows aren’t having their picks bust at the rate the “average” team is, so we can’t either if we want to win big. If we want the window open, we need to be hitting on studs with some of these picks, especially when we have a war chest like we did in 2024. That’s my thing.

Ravens offensive draft picks since 2019 to “build around Lamar” (DeCosta’s first year as Gm):
RB: Justice Hill (fourth, 2019), J.K. Dobbins (second, 2020), Ben Mason (fifth, 2021), Tyler Badie (sixth, 2022), Rasheen Ali (fifth, 2024)
WR: Marquise Brown (first, 2019), Miles Boykin (third, 2019), Devin Duvernay (third, 2020), James Proche (sixth, 2020), Rashod Bateman (first, 2021), Tylan Wallace (fourth, 2021), Zay Flowers (first, 2023), Devontez Walker (fourth, 2024)
OL: Ben Powers (fourth, 2019), Tyre Phillips (third, 2020), Ben Bredeson (fourth, 2020), Ben Cleveland (third, 2021), Tyler Linderbaum (first, 2022), Daniel Faalele (fourth, 2022), Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu (sixth, 2023), Andrew Vorhees (seventh, 2023), Roger Rosengarten (second, 2024), Nick Samac (seventh, 2024)
TE: Charlie Kolar (fourth, 2022), Isaiah Likely (fourth, 2022)

Of course, you’d need to define “hit” but pick your metric and feel free to try and come up with a greater than average “hit list” of players from that bunch.

Yeah i agree, its just too early to know, how this all shakes out and he compares to the greats because he simply hasn't had the time or chances they have, nor in my opinion took over a roster of their equivalency.
As you stated previously, already having a surplus of talent surrounding the new guys you bring in helps their transition.

this opinion is obviously philosophical but I'd be willing to bet had we taken cooper and the eagles taken sainristil their roles would be reversed.
Cooper would be the guy flashing a bunch of potential and mikey would be nearing household name status as a superbowl champ.

It matters that sainristil was on a defense that was lost half the time and cooper was on the best defense in the league, that type of support will make anybody look better, the ole rising tide lifts all ships thing.

the eagles have had plenty of misses over the last 5 years, most notably jalen reagor over justin jefferson, that decision was Ron rivera unforgivable but when you've had so many hits its a lot easier to look the other way.

I suspect as this roster gets more and more talented we'll stop noticing the misses as much but its going to take a lot of time because this roster was so bad and even at the higher hit rates the elite gm's have we had so many holes it takes years of drafts to recover.

My biggest concern so far with peters approach has been how many draft picks he's surrendered to bring in veteran talent in win now mode, i get the logic, we have our franchise quarterback so go for it while we're in his rookie window but we are so depleted of blue chip guys that yes you are right, you have to be nearly perfect in the draft to pull that strategy off otherwise 2 or 3 years from now we'll be over the hill and have no youth or top draft picks to take over.
Thats how good teams end up having 3 or 4 bad years in order to stock back up on high draft picks to re acquire young talent.

Yeah those % are well known by all of us, the same with when Peters was hired. It's a shame that the past regimes couldn't even hit those numbers with decent picks. Hell, many of the draft picks that made this team over the past 10 years only did because our teams talent level was so freaking low in general.

Peters began with a shit show and has done wonders so far in turning things around from front office to scouting to coaching and players..but I have already said all of this

II am not looking to compare any teams or GM's or drafts. It's strange you select the Ravens They have had the same HC since 2008. Talk about keeping consistency, they have only won less than 8 games once since then, 17 freaking years. Their front office has been winning awards of excellence almost since the franchise began.

It's because of the crap that AP inherited that he needs to do better than whatever the hell the average percentage of hits or misses are in the draft and FA, especially with day one and two picks.

^^^ eff'd up for sure. OMG they guys comments are hilarious and the Dallas fan, well.....

At work I used to laugh at guys that would say ‘well, X criticizes our design and he isn’t even an architect’.

No, but X could look at division specifications and see the project architect had approved the placement of a fire hydrant in the middle of a sidewalk 😄

The same goes for football. We may not be former NFL players but we can look at players like Jamin Davis or Jahan Dotson on the field and observe that they are not worthy of being first round draft choices.

In all walks people are judged on results.

Folks can make excuses about how hard a job is and I can agree but at the same time note a competitor has a guy that can do it and get it right.

So plaudits for taking Daniels at #2 instead of McCarthy or Maye in 2024.

But outside of that pick I think we still have not identified another of those top 100 picks we made that is at this point a guy we definitely want to commit a large second contract to.

In fact we are waiting for Newton and Sinnott as #2 picks to show that they belong in the category of ‘future starter’.

For McCaffrey the ceiling might have been a #3 type slot receiver.

But then we drafted Lane at about the same place in the draft in 2025 who projects to the same spot.

Coincidence? Perhaps. But not necessarily a vote of confidence either.

The running joke during the Gibbs years was that we wished Beathard traded all of his #2 picks because so many of them were busts in the long run.

But he made up for it by finding Russ Grimm, Charles Mann and Alvin Walton in Round 3 and hosts of other top starters later in draft.

Again I am waiting for some of these guys to start emerging.

.

What hurts most about your analysis is that AP was billed as a super scout with an otherworldly eye for talent. We would’ve probably been better off not making the trade with the Eagles and then using a consensus board to make our picks

Any time you can get a starting caliber OUTSIDE corner you take that over a slot guy unless you already have a shutdown lead, which we did not have.

In fact our outside corners starting the opener in 2025 were among the worst in the NFC.

Davis was cut.

Forbes was cut.

St. Juste was not offered a second contract with the team.

This situation made us panic and trade picks for Lattimore.

So, that one move in draft cost us a lot when all is said and done.

I like Mikey. Man he is a baller and give his all. But what you said is spot on. This was most definitely a huge mistake.
