Tell the Truth Friday- Commanders @ Packers Edition

Here are my 3 truths
1) Are we not sure RON is coaching the team this year - the offense has been super conservative , no going for it on 4th down totally different feel to coaching this season to last
2) JD is slower than last year or his running patterns were figured out
3) this team for the entire last season and this season has no clue how to turn the ball over off of other teams

Yesterday’s game had total Ron Rivera vibes to it. In fact, I think Scott Turner, not Kliff, was calling the plays. 😄

Again I don’t understand the offense not using our younger more explosive players to break things open with a bit of creativity.

The unit was stagnant with the Packers sniffing out some of the things we did last year.

Kliff with the injuries and the 10 day break now has the time to reset and scheme to get more speed on the field and make it count on critical downs.

I agree the coaches on both sides of ball seem to be focused on not making mistakes rather than being aggressive and taking some risks to make plays.

The sample of 2024 and this year tells the tale. Kliff loves to pass. JD’s skills gave him what he needed to scratch that itch and still win. A large majority of Kliff’s quarters are called in a very unbalanced way.

For me, that isn’t good, consistent winning football in 2025. Week 1 both Cowboys and Eagles Os made Ds look bad. They kept going back and forth. A lot of running.

I watched it and I wondered, will Kliff learn?

4 rushes for JCM? Yeah, I have my answer for now.

I knew all offseason teams would make a plan for Jayden Daniels. Apparently it's zone to keep defenders facing the QB, there was no doubt they would attempt to remove his escape routes and play tight coverage to take away the short passing game and that's what happened on Thursday night. Jayden had no where to go with the ball and no place to run. They need a counter move and he needs to start playing better. We don't want to talk about it but we need Jayden Daniels to play much better than what we have seen. RIP Austin Eckler, we will never see you play for us again. He was always one of my favorite players around the league but now JCM will be getting the carries he deserves.

Yep. There's a big flaw in that plan though. Daniels is accurate and should be able to pick a zone apart.

Last year, the Giants for all their failings did have a strong D/pass rush. The Pack look crazy good at pass rush. If our o line can step it up, rushing four and playing zone should play right into Daniels' hands. The key though is not earthshaking. We just have to get better. Terry's got to get scary. Noah's got to win his possession balls, Deebo's got to be unpredictable and get his YAC. With Ekeler gone, I don't know that we have a good receiving back, but we still should be fine in the run game.

Does it though? Or does it just seem that way sometimes? At first I was nodding my head in agreement when I read this but a quick look at 2024 stats tells me we were seventh in the league in run rate, third in runs per game, fourth in rush yards per game. Yes, Jayden scrambles more than other QBs, and that skews the stats some. But still, seems like Kliff actually runs the ball plenty. It’s just very difficult to keep it up in a game where you are down two scores early and having trouble converting on third down.

I am sure you are playing devil's advocate here to some degree, and I know the game-to-game stats would show like that; that's why I specified quarter-to-quarter. For whatever reason, it has seemed to me that Kliff will go long spans of game time without running much and then all of a sudden (even in the third or fourth quarters, losing by a touchdown or whatever else) suddenly run more. I would be really surprised if quarter-by-quarter he called rushing plays as much as passing. As you said, also, I would really like to talk about plays where we are handing off. Not QB run plays. It opens up a lot more in terms of play-action and other aspects; but it is just not a part of Kliff's scheme. The issue with Kliff's scheme is that if you play a team like GB, I don't see a great answer. Apparently Kliff didn't either. For me, when you run the ball well and know how to threaten with rushes, it opens up a lot. You don't even have to be super successful all of the time.

It may surprise some to know that Jacobs had a lower ypc than JCM on Thursday. However, the quantity of rushes that Jacobs had represented a significant threat, and it opened up big lanes for the passing game regardless of how successful we were in getting to the backfield. This type of stuff ends up completely missing from Kliff's game not because he never rushes, but because of how he designs and times his playcalls.

As I recall, there *were* a couple of games in 2024 where Kliff ran the ball well. The Titans game comes to mind. However, even with Scott Turner, there were a couple of games where he committed to the run and the team won handily. The defenses didn't expect it at all because it was so against tendency. It really shouldn't be. Balance should be baked into the scheme/calls (and I don't mean game-to-game, I mean quarter-to-quarter). The problem is, we would return to our typical form soon enough, and defenses would key off. I think Kliff >>> Turner, and Jayden >>> other QBs we have had, for sure, and thus 2024 happens. However, I do see Kliff having a strong predilection to the pass. That's unfortunate.

In one of his pressers late last year, he admitted that DQ has to remind him to run sometimes and explain how it keeps defenses honest. That's a weird thing for an OC, to me. Really weird.

I was thinking when I sw the headline that the 18 pt performance was the worst output of the Daniel's lead Commanders. Sometimes, it is hard to keep perspective, but we went years wishing for an offense that could consistently score 20 pts. Even in our worst game of recent times, we were better than 2 years ago.

They also scored 18 against the Bears last season. They needed the hail mary to reach that total.

I’m curious what headline that was. While technically correct, they scored 18 points twice last year. Chris mentioned the Bears Hail Mary game, where they were one play away from scoring 12. They also only scored 18 against the Eagles on a Thursday night. That game was eerily similar to Thursday’s game. Bad games happen. This was a bad game, but he and the team had some bad games last year.

And yes, the bad games now were the norm just a few years ago. The team has raised the bar and raised expectations. That’s a good thing.

It is fair to really question AP’s second round choices last year.

- Newton shows pass rushing chops but he is a liability against the run and a backup
- Sainristil looks solid but, if you are taking a slot CB in the 2nd, he better be lights out (in retrospect, should’ve just stayed at the pick and taken DeJean)
- Sinnott has clearly not been worth a 2nd. He’s a guy who was liked on the ES board but as a 3rd or 4th

A big regret here is all the tackles who went end of the 2nd. Rosengarten is a good starting RT and tooled up Patrick Paul had a fantastic first start for the Dolphins. There was potentially an opportunity to double up on linemen and still take Coleman.

Gotta give some credit to the Packers defense though. That is a good young defense over there. We got beat soundly. It happens. Just gotta move on to the next game and grow every week going forward. Glad we have the 10 days of rest though.

So what happened in the game. I was on a 3 day marathon bingo game marathon with my grandmother.

the offense from 2024 is not really sustainable.

Daniels had far too many rushing attempts last year and that MRI this week on his knee should be a warning across the bow for Kliff and hell for ALL of us that a 13 or 14 year career for Jayden means transitioning and strategically using his run for critical downs a d when things break down.

When I see him taking the ball on a planned run on second and 5 or downs line that in the middle of game my first thought is isn’t that why we have Merritt and Rodriguez on the roster?

Overall speed was an issue in 2024 so we drafted a couple of players with explosive ability, let’s get them on the field for more than a cameo role.

BTW - do we finally get to see Sinnott play on offense with the injury to Bates and be part of pass offense or are we just hiding a bust pick?

I can see raw but athletic players being given measured playing time but we are in Year 2 now and we are not seeing him line up to make even the occasional athletic catch or run to show he has value going forward.

I can’t think of a second round pick that has received these few passing targets more than a year in.

The turf at lambeau was super slick. Saw a bunch of guys slipping. Mostly on our side. Not sure if that is normal there. Had something to do with why JD didn’t run very well.

When they face similar conditions in the future they have to adjust with more power offense

When we say run the ball that really means giving it to a RB. Jayden ran the ball 148 times (B rob ran it 178 for comparison). That didn't shake the stats "some" that is a significant factor in evaluating just how often KK runs the ball with a running back, And it's clearly not very often when compared to other teams.

I too scratch my head with the Ben Sinnott pick at this point. I know that TE is a very complex position to learn, but to not even have Sinnott playing anything other than special teams is troubling.

Sinnott had one catch on one target vs GB and 3 total plays (4%).

Right, so coaches don’t trust him to run a ‘Johnny’ detail as they say in the Army 🤬
