Explains why they don’t care that Gay doesn’t kick touchbacks—they don’t want him to. You’re incentivized to not allow the returner to catch it in the end zone and kneel. Some of these teams would only need two first downs to get in realistic FG range, if they consistently start at the 35. Gotta make em return it and trust the coverage unit

Yeah thats why all the line drive kicks in the pre season.
The goal is to get it to skip somewhere between the 20 and the goal line because if it does the touchback is on the 20 but if it sails into the endzone in the air the ball comes out to the 35.
Huge difference.

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but if the ball bounces before going in the endzone it comes out to the 20?

If it bounces into the endzone, yes.
For instance, the ball first hits at the 10, and bounces into the endzone.
Provided the receiving team doesnt pick it up and run with it, of course.

Yes it has to land in the zone as they call it which i believe is between the goal line and the 20, if it does the team can return it from there but if it skips into the endzone and results in a touchback the ball comes out to the 20.

I believe there is also a penalty for not reaching the 20 but im not sure on that, i think it might be like a kickoff out of bounds.

• Landing zone is the area between the receiving team’s goal line and its 20-yard line.
• Any kick that hits short of the landing zone – treated like kickoff out of bounds and ball spotted at B40 yard line; play would be blown dead as soon as kick lands short of the landing zone
• Any kick that hits and remains in the landing zone – must be returned
• Any kick that hits in the landing zone and then goes into the end zone – must be returned or downed by receiving team – if downed then touchback to B20 yard line
• Kick hits in end zone, stays inbounds - returned or downed – if downed then touchback to B35 yard line
• Any kick that goes out of the back of the end zone (in the air or bounces) – touchback to B35 yard line

So ultimately what you want to do is hit a hundred mile an hour worm burner that hits at the 5ish and and caroms into the endzone.

Or if your special teams are elite something that lands inside the 5 but its risky, put just a hair too much on it and its coming out to the 35 not enough and you set up a chance at a good return.

If it was me, I'd try to coffin corner every kick to hit innside the 5 on one side or the other with an angle to go into the endzone. If they catch it and return it, they're 'pinned' to one side of the field. If they let it go and it bounces out either through the endzone, or out on the sideline, it comes to the 20.

Unless it goes out of the sideline before it makes it to the endzone then it comes out to the 40.
Thats the risk there.
Thats why punts are angled to the sidelines a lot more often than kickoffs.

thats not the way i read the rules... from what I see, if it hits IN BOUNDS within the landing zone... it comes to the 20 either way.

It is a little vague on that point but i believe a kick that goes out of bounds before the endzone no matter where it landed its considered a kick out of bounds and would come out to the 40.

Id like clarificaiton on that though, i could be wrong.

Ill say this, if they are all brought out to the 20 then i agree 100 percent, angle everything just cheat towards the middle of the field to avoid kicking it out of bounds on the fly.

• Kicks that fail to reach the landing zone or go out of bounds give the receiving team possession at their 35-yard line

No doubt but that really wouldn't make any sense.
For one the nfl has always punished you for having a kickoff roll out of bounds even if it started in play.
And this new dynam8c kickoff is all about keeping the ball in play, seems strange they'd change the rule now to make it easier to kick out of play.

I am too old to love the new kickoff rules. I bet kickers dont like them much. I would have kept moving the spot back until most kickers cannot hit the end zone.

We saw a guy injured on last nights kickoff. They are wanting returns and not wanting injuries... good luck with that.

I'll forever miss the surprise onside, one of my favorite plays.

Yes, but the team has to declare that they are going to do it and be trailing in the game. No surprises.
