Hear all this talk about Magee, how the staff loves him, he's a "presence", a real linebacker, etc.

Be nice to actually see that come to fruition on the field whether it's run defense or pass defense. Right now, he's just another Jamin Davis .
 
I hate the Giants and hate what I am seeing from them. They look hungry and have gone at this season with a hungry approach from the jump.

Like SIP has been saying, that was the Commanders last season but certainly not this year. We need that fire that DQ seemed to ignite last season (with all the personnel moves). Commanders really need to gain that fire and fast!

I think our team is going to be improved in all of our 2024 weakness areas but too have very big concerns about our run defense. It's not going to be popular but the DL will need to be the top focus next off-season. Here's to hoping our offense can thrive and keep us a couple scores ahead of our opponents to ease the run stopping burdens

I think we'll just have to wait and see.

I think the difference between Jay and Quinn is Quinn seems to absolutely not care at all about the preseason games, but cares much more about running energetic practices, joint practices, and competition than "yuk yuk spring break" camp Jay.

I will say all of the beat reporters have said this wasn't a truly physical camp. I do think there's something to having a lot of veterans they want to keep healthy which goes into that. If you look at the top 10-ish players on the team (apart from #1 and #2, this isn't really in any particular order):

1. JD5 - Young
2. Tunsil - Veteran (31)
3. Wagner - Veteran (35)
4. Lattimore - Veteran (29, and oft injurred)
5. Terry - Veteran (30)
6. Ertz - Veteran (34)
7. Biadacz - Veteran (27)
8. Mikey S. - Young
9. Frankie Luvu - Veteran (28)
10. Deebo Samuel - Veteran (29)

Yeah, there are some young guys (Conerly Jr, Amos, Brandon Coleman, etc. etc. etc.), but the core of guys are in their mid to late 20's or 30's. And Quinn did a good job keeping guys on the field last year, and I have to think that some of it is intentional not to wear folks out in preseason and in training camp.

But it is a fine line to walk. Make sure you are prepared vs. wearing out your team.

So we'll see how it goes. And while this isn't on Jay, I also think having a JD5 is a force multiplier.

I also think our offense should be completely fine, at least as good if not significantly better than last year. I just have absolutely no idea what to expect from the defense. Too many different pieces, and I don't think we really saw what they wanted to do at all last year.

I like the depth of our receivers better than theirs. Nabers clears all--but after him, I'll take McLaurin, Deebo, and Brown, over Slayton and Robinson. Robinson had 143 targets and 93 receptions...for 699 yards. Zach Ertz had 33 less catches for 45 fewer yards, and he had about 4 YAC all year. Hyatt and Lane/LMC are unproven maybes at this point. Nabers was also a non-factor in our second matchup last year--9 rec, 59 yrds, 0 TDs.

Also, remember, their DL accounted for 0 sacks against us, total, last year.

Their slot CB, Dru Phillips, I think goes under the radar with being a third round pick. I love Sainristill. But he struggled some in the slot. Phillips was a stud.

If Lattimore finds his stride and can stay healthy for a change, I'd change my preferring our CBs by a little to a lot. But that's a wildcard. And as much as I love what I've read about Amos -- rookies tend to struggle so there is some wildcard with him.

I agree with most of this. Agree, will see.

And also it could be losing a battle to win the war. Start soft but finish strong. Like a mile race, easier to run faster in the end if you start slower.

My gut is Quinn took the point too much to the extreme. But I am open and hoping to be wrong.

I have no way to judge if he took it too far or not.

I do think it would have been beneficial to get JD5 at least 1 pass in the preseason. And that's not just for JD5, but also for the receivers and OL so they get at least, I dunno, 5-10 live pass reps.

JD5 had a preseason stat line of 1 drive, 0-0, 1 rush for 12 yards and a TD.

I would submit I think they could have done a little more. But Tunsil was out, and a few other people, Terry was holding out, so I don't entirely fault Quinn for punting on the entire pre-season game schedule.

I probably would have done something a little different, but literally, what the fuck do I know about how to prepare a football team vs. Quinn who has coached in a SB and NFC Championship game?

I think you nailed it here, the secondary could be boom or bust.

IF Lattimore returns to form and IF Mikey is stout in the slot and IF Amos doesn't have too many rookie struggles, they could be an outstanding group.

Lot's of if's.

It could happen. And it might even be even money.

Of course. I've said many times I don't have any definitive opinion on this. I am guessing.

I know some other NFL coaches, including some pedigreed ones like Andy Reid disagree with Quinn's approach. But them again, Sean McVay, a Jay protege, is also famous for also not taking the preseason seriously.
 
I talked about how that O line tends to fall apart without Thomas, hours back. Yeah if Thomas ends up missing this one, its huge. It might change my mind as to them winning this one.



A potential big blow for the Giants​

The Giants are heading into the season dealing with an injury that occurred last year, and it would put a massive strain on a key position for their offense. Left tackle Andrew Thomas suffered a Lisfranc foot injury during Week 6 last season, and he’s still dealing with the difficult rehab process.

He just finally passed his physical on August 21st, but he’s just now starting to actually run, and hasn’t gone through any team drills. Giants’ head coach Brian Daboll said the team will have a walkthrough, and everyone is expected to participate, but a walkthrough and being game-ready are completely different. Thomas spoke to the media a few days ago and made it clear that he doesn’t plan on rushing back.

“I want to be back, but if I don’t feel comfortable to be able to perform at the level I think I can, I don’t think it makes sense for me to be out there”

My biggest concern with Lattimore isn't his play, it's his head. Hopefully Quinn has figured out how to tie down the loose cannon. I love his fire, but I have the impression that he is gonna be good for at least one PI, unnecessary roughness (and possible eviction) per game. If Nabers can get inside Marshawns head, we may be beaten before the pass is even thrown. Am I the only one?

I got some concerns about it, too. But my main concern is his health, he's been missing many games year after year.

How I see the Giants winning in a nut shell

A. Set up for play action from Tyronne Tracy having a good day. Then, bombs away -- Russell Wilson to Nabers, Slayton -- they kill it with runs and the deep ball for multiple big plays.
B. Their D line -- Eagles style versus KC in the SB, harasss Jayden just way too much to get a rythmn going
C. In a tight game -- they just want it more and gives them the edge

How I see the Commanders winning

A. If Thomas is out -our underrrated pass rush just harass Russell Wilson throughout the game so no deep balls to be had.
B. Jayden-Deebo-Gonzalez-Croskey-Merritt, make their defense freeze by running the ball so much that they can't tee off
C. While i think the Giants are likely more motivated, if Jayden has the ball in his hands on the last drive, i am always betting on his side.

If Thomas is out, this game feels like a toss up. If Thomas plays, I give the Giants a slight edge.

Last time I bet the Giants would win was alas that 2016 end of the season game, where most of the fans on ES saw it as a gimmie. I didn't. And I was treated like a loon then. But the game played out to my fears. Don't get me wrong I'd love this time to be circled back to this post, and be made of fun of. I hate the Giants.

The good news for me is I so don't feel good about this upcoming game that if Washington wins, I'd be more juiced than usual. And I'd more than happy to eat crow on this thread about it.
