The All Things Terry Thread

The more Terry sits out disgruntled, the more time it leaves for JD5 to get used to his receivers not named Terry. May accidentally make himself:

I've said since the jump I see 28-32 million the range that could work for both Terry & the organization. Now because Metcalf got 33.....I could see throwing Terry a little something extra for the sake of giving him the win on paper to say he got more, but I honestly don't see him getting over 33 million under any circumstances. If Terry ain't budging, then I see either a trade or him playing out the final season of his contract with the franchise tag on the table going into next offseason if Terry has another very good season.

Love Terry, want him to retire a member of this team, but the organization is focused on the big picture now and this front office is not going to commit to something they see as a roadblock to the bigger goal.

Still hoping a deal gets done in the next week or two, but I admit the odds of it happening seem to be decreasing assuming the numbers Terry's agent is demanding are accurate.

I think Metcalf got overpaid. He's good but IMO he's not a top 5 guy, which is what he's getting paid as. 33 million would put Terry in that top 5 and while I love him, I just don't see him as the same kind of game breaker that Chase, Jefferson, Lamb, etc. are.

He's also going to be 30 before the beginning of this season, so he's several years older than the guys who are making the top 5 money (including Metcalf, even though they were drafted in the same year).

I imagine the FO may be thinking along the same lines. I would cap what I'd pay him at 30. If his side refuses to budge, then I guess he just plays on the last year of his contract with the possibility of a franchise tag later, as you noted.

Any vision into next year's WR class? Just curious
Havent dove deep yet but WR for many years now has been strong. Some years more than others but thats a position where you typically have plenty fish in the sea especially from Jayden’s old school.

for sure DK is overpaid. a desperate overpay by a desperate organization in the steelers. it's unfortunate that they helped create this market and put us in this situation, but maybe we should've re-upped Terry sooner rather than waiting till the rest of the market overpaid or reset the market.

also, as a side note, I can agree that Sutton sets the floor...but in no way are they comparable. considering he's someone with a major injury history, including minor surgeries like with his ankles, and way below terry's production. if you have dreams of pressuring Terry and his agent into a 24 million per year contract, you are just as delusional as Buddy Baker.

Honest question, who are the better receivers than Terry?
Jefferson
Lamb
AJ Brown
Chase
Slim Reaper
Mike Evans
Cheetah

Terry / Collins

Amon Ra

Who else am I missing? He’s somewhere around 7/8… that’s gotta put him at 30-32?

Off the top of my head...Tyreek, Nico, Nabers, Thomas, Evans, Puca... probably a few others

Thomas and Nabors have youth but I don’t think I’d put them over Terry yet based on route running and savvy. Nabors scares me though. Can’t argue Tyreek and forgot about Nico Collins (push), not Puca but he’s a beast… yeah Pittsburgh definitely overpaid DK…!

The only guys on that list making over $30m/year are all several years younger than Terry (and also better). Tyreek is 31 and making ~$30m/year. Mike Evans will be 32 soon and is making ~$20m/year, Nico Collins is making ~$25m/year. That's why I say I wouldn't go over $30m/year. Terry is very good but he's not top 5 in talent and he's on the wrong side of 30.

I expect him to get franchised at this point if Schefter's report is accurate. A trade only occurs if Peters gets a super offer. I don't think any team wants to pay him what he wants so I doubt a trade. Can't stand the hold in strategy. If he's trying to out duel Peters not going to happen.

I think another important thing is that by the end of this coming season you’ll probably be able to add another 5-6 names to that list due to young guys breaking out while he gets another year older

Puka definitely, he plays a lot of slot sure but he’s unstoppable. Garrett Wilson soon. Nabors already, yes come on. Alpha profile and it would be a miracle for us if he wasn’t a stud.

Non-zero chance that after this season many people will prefer some number of young guys from this group (not all, I’m sure):

JSN
London
Brian Thomas Jr.
Odunze
Harrison Jr.

That’s not even counting any of the hyped rookies who may hit immediately, tough to say. Jeremiah Smith is coming out soon and he may immediately get that Julio/AJG hype that puts him in consideration just based on ceiling and pedigree.

This is the rough part about paying big money to a guy who is gonna be 31 by the time the new contract kicks in, in a league where the WR position keeps getting more talented and deeper and younger guys join every year

DB’s in this league have it tough, man

Here are the list of receivers who had 1200+ yards last season + their age:
Jefferson - 26
Ceedee Lamb - 26
AJ Brown - 28
Ja'Mar Chase - 25
DK Metcalf - 27
Brian Thomas (rookie season 1282 yards, 10TDs for Jax) 22
Drake London - 24
Amon-Ra St. Brown - 25
Jerry Jeudy - 26
Malik Nabers - 22

What's the common theme for all of them?

They are all 26 or younger.

Terry is looking for a contract at the worst possible time for him. If Terry's camp is trying to comp him to the contracts of any of these players, it's not going to work. Here's the thing about the DK Metcalf contract: the 2027 season is when DK hits Terry's current age. And the Steelers weren't entirely stupid: They can get out of the contract after 2026 with an $18m cap hit, and after the 2027 season with a $12m cap hit.

If the Commanders offered Terry a 4 year extension, the last season of the extension would be the 2029 season. That would be Terry's age 34 season.

I do think Kevin Sheehan is correct, the fact the numbers leaked about what Terry is asking for HAS to be coming from the team. Which is out of character for Peters, it probably means he's really frustrated that Terry and his agent are not remotely in the right ballpark.

If what is recently reported is accurate, then there is only one true statement: Terry is getting bad advice.

If I was Peters right now, I might be tempted to offer Terry a 1 year extension: Fully guarantee his salary this year (~$20m with roster, and other bonuses), give him $30m fully guaranteed for next year and a $10m signing bonus. That basically takes him to $30m fully guaranteed for the next 2 seasons, and then he's a FA. And I'd put a no franchise tag clause in.

That would give him top 5 money for the next 2 years, fully guaranteed. Then you worry about age 32 year after the 2026 season.

It will never happen, but it really should.

On the subject of young receivers starting to wonder if a team may tank for Jeremiah Smith in the 2027 draft. Can't remember a team doing this for a non qb but he may the one. Joel Klatt called him recently the greatest college player he's ever seen. PFF is rating him as one of the greatest receivers they've ever scouted. Very high chance this kid goes top 2.

other than age, I put DeVonta Smith at the same level as Terry. Nico is ahead of Terry if not for him constantly getting injured. conn is also right about the young guys, a bunch of them will probably push Terry out of top 10 consideration in a year or two - at least from fan/league consensus. imo, the perfect deal is for 28 to 29 mil. this would put him right around DJ Moore's contract and I view them as equals. Terry is gonna have to accept a little over 30, at most. I see no pathway for him getting 34+ in any scenario, even if traded.

All of this makes sense if Terry’s camp acts rationally.

But if he decides to hold out and come in after Game 8 to get credit for playing the league year it means Washington would be playing without him through much of a difficult schedule.

People may not think he will hold out into the season but how many people at the end of last year anticipated a guy with 1096 yards would be asking for top 5 money?

Significantly more than $33M?

McLaurin makes Hendrickson’s requests look reasonable given Trey’s league leading statistics.

The reason I indicated Washington could give his camp the ability to seek out a deal is I don’t believe anyone else is going to give him $33M plus as part of a potential trade deal.

KC traded a better player in Tyreek Hill after a Super Bowl and Mahomes continued to be productive with other receivers to win two more and counting.

I've been pretty supportive of Terry through this but it's starting to reach a point that is wearing thin. I still would like to give Terry the benefit of the doubt here, so my fandom is causing me to look more toward his agent, but this is getting irritating.

Yeah. I like Terry the player and I do want to see him get an extension that rewards him, but it's not like he was suffering under a bad contract before. He's still being very handsomely paid even by NFL standards.

In my book, McLaurin deserves a contract with a slight premium and a decelerator. I'd be fine with 35 this year, 32 next year and then 25 or even 20 in his final year.

If it's true that Terry is looking for more than what (overpaid) Metcalf is making, then he basically wants to be paid as a top 3 or top 2 WR, making what Jefferson or Lamb are. Both of whom are better than Terry and both of whom are about 4 years younger than Terry.

If he won't budge from that number then I don't see these talks going anywhere, because I also don't see AP agreeing to that. It makes more sense now why the impasse is there.

I wonder if he'll pull a Trey Hendrickson and completely refuse to play this season without a new contract.

Give him the DK deal on an EXTENSION.

2025 (Existing deal) - 19.6 [from memory?]
2026 - 33
2027 - 33

That's 85.6M for 3 years. Terry can look at those two addition years as validation of his quality, but from the team perspective, it's a 27.533 M / yr deal.
