Not with enough support that Harris could afford to rebrand the team over.

There was a survey back in 2023, I believe, that showed how poor reception the name got. The issue was of all the other alternatives, none had more than 15-20% support. It was so fractured, it clearly showed no name (and I wanted Redwolves, which others hate) would form any kind of conensus. 80% were going to dislike it and whine they didn't get their name chosen.

I do think there is a lack of an overwhelming consensus on an alternative name - hard not to see that. But where Wright and Company really screwed the pooch was not going with any fan favorites and arbitrarily selecting what they ‘liked’.

Had they gone with one of the fan favorites (whether loved by a wide majority or not) I don’t think we are in this place now. We are reluctant Redwolves, Redtails, Warriors, or Wolves fans…

Agreed. Basically, a plurality is the best any name was going to get. ( Which is why staying WFT may have been our best bet )
There is only one name that would still get an actual majority.

This franchise is trending in the right directions on all fronts. The SB era uniform unveiling made me as a "Redskins" fan that has already come to terms with the name not coming back so happy .

I am so sick of politics and media need to generate clicks/rage bait over every single thing. Why are we asking the leader of the Executive Branch what he thinks regarding an issue the Executive Branch has no authority over? Because is drives clicks because said Executive Branch leader is controversial and the parasites in the media are almost guaranteed a controversial quote.

And here we all sit just wanting to enjoy the resurgence of out Football Franchise after 25 years out in the wilderness.

I loathe 99% of the media and wish ill upon the lot.

Maybe, maybe not. Entirely hypothetical and can be debated until the cows come home. But where we are right now, is with a brand that's objectively and demonstrably growing in popularity and affection. Would another name be as popular, under the same circumstances? Maybe, maybe not. Again, entirely hypothetical and debatable. But the reality is, we have a name this organization--for whatever reason, be it league pressure or whatever--chose to stick with. And almost two thirds of the fans of the team are now at least accepting the name.

You don't like it fine--there are plenty who are with you. I am not trying to tell you how to feel--but this idea that there is a vast majority of fans who were ignored is blatantly false.

I feel you Chuck. I would be curious how many Washington fans really want to return to the name and all of the controversy that comes with it? Is it a given that, at this point, there is even a majority that would?

Those that have known me can imagine (or outright know) my thoughts on the current administration.

Given the name was changed by people of a particular political persuasion, stumbling blindly backward into a situation where Snyder drove the org into the ground and defrauded his financial partners to the extent they exacted revenge via large team and nfl sponsors they controlled, I have no problem with someone that has the power forcing the name back in any way necessary. The name never should have changed.

Couple observations:
- Bowser once said the only way DC would consider hosting the team (stadium or facilities) was if they would change the name. Pressed on it yesterday - she answer directly that no she would not stop the stadium if the name changed back. 😆

- I do not like the Cleveland Indians being lumped in. I think there is a difference in origins or the name and the logo. I’m a white person so idk if it’s offensive; and even if it is I’m not so sure it matters. Catering to everyone’s offense is an exhausting, losing battle. I don’t have much of an opinion other then they’re different situations and I’d prefer ours stand alone on its own merits.

- if Josh Harris wanted to change the name back (or changed at all) I can’t imagine this is the way he wanted it done 😆

- I contend that the ‘best’ answer (assuming best is to placate the most people and not be controversial) is to just be Washington. Change the name to redskins, officially “retire” it, just got by Washington. Fans that want to say redskins, will; those that don’t; won’t; and you can control how the media refers to you via media license (so they’ll call us Washington). You will never successfully “replace” the name but you may find some (enough?) success in retiring it.

- anyone using polls or some of the other arguments about how the name is being accepted… look at ratings, season tickets, and what goes on the community. i dont agree with the argument its been accepted.

- ultimately I don’t think Trump actually cares and this is a distraction campaign so I don’t have any real hope this goes anywhere. But if it did it’ll go on my list of things i like about him 😆

I have already stated I accepted it when Harris said it was the permanent name. Any other mindset makes no sense to me. And I have no interest in returning to the renaming drama.

My point was that Wright and Company thrusting a name that few if any fans were campaigning for on an upset fanbase made an already toxic environment much more volatile. There may not have been a consensus on the alternative name, but there were innumerable ones that had more support. And that was completely ignored.

Even the gas guys here just a little while ago pulled out my oven, knocked over the salt & pepper shakers that LadySkinsFan gave me in a commemorative set (they didn't break, and we all talked about the name change thing cuz of course I'm wearing gear and have the training camp stuff up on my computer).

I just don't believe any poll that says 2/3 of fans like or love the name? I've never spoken to a single fan that "loves" the name. I've never spoken to a single opposing fan who had anything positive to say about the name Commanders. Across the board, the feelings are somewhere between ambivalence and hatred.

So for anyone, who like me initially asked “uhm, can he even do that?” Sheehan had someone on to explain the 3 routes Trump could take (and noted he could choose any one, or any combination of the three to cause problems for the team)

Summary:
- he can cancel the new lease deal via executive action. He may or may not win in court, but by sending it to court he could tie it up for months (and in combination with everything else, years) effectively making the team move on to an alternative option

- the national capital planning commission must vote on individual construction projects. He could use that group to hold up the vote or vote against. They could make demands the team won’t accept, add cost to the project they won’t accept, or just be so annoying with it all the team decides to give up and move on. They can also outright reject it.

- there’s the Washington commission on fine arts (may have that name wrong) that has to approve construction projects to make sure they fit the defined DC “look and feel”. They can cause the same problems as the planning commission.

For both those orgs trump has appointed the board members that vote. Obviously it’s unclear any (much less enough) would do what he wants, we have plenty of examples of Trump not getting his way with people he (or his party) appointed (as we do with every president). So you can’t say for sure. But the mechanisms are there. And ultimately winning may not be literally stopping the project but just making it such a pain the team gives up.

The name and stadium should not be tied together. They are two separate items altogether. I hated it when Bowser brought it up before and I hate it now that Trump is bringing it up. But if there is anything I have learned in my life is that political posturing gets more headlines, more attention, and more followers than actually doing the work. It seems like every few weeks, someone will bring up some reason as a threat to stop the stadium. So we are going to have to live with the posturing until the stadium is actually built. It sucks and sucks even more when issues not related to building the stadium are used to delay or threaten the process. And I believe that if the owners go to MD or VA, we will be dealing with the same thing, just maybe with different issues and reasons to fight it. Maybe the federal involvement is not in the way in those scenarios, but there will be a group of locals to fight it no matter where it’s built.
