The deal will get done, I am confident. This is all posturing by the DC Council, but as the momentum for the stadium (and the expectations of a done deal) mounts, they will fold and vote in favor. You only need 7, so it's likely that a few will vote in the negative to be able to say to their constituents that they tried to stand against the stadium. DC would be insane to not do so, especially when the ownership group is funding double what they are asking the city to provide (for infrastructure) and the city will greatly benefit.

The one thing that has to happen is they have to pull the old stadium down. It's costing money for some degree of upkeep, it's falling down anyway, and it's just an empty eyesore.

I'm really hoping Harris can help save DC from itself. I'm actually somewhat dubious he will be successful. I might be cynical, but I still think there's a 50% chance the stadium ends up exactly where it currently is because the DC government does not have a track record of doing anything productive for the football team. I keep going back to the fact after 3 SBs and 4 SB appearances, DC failed to be able to work something out with JKK. Literally anything is believable.

I do think that would be a HUGE black eye for the city though, because it is in no small part due to the lobbying the Harris group did the land is even in DC's control. It's his group which lobbied and got the bill through the Senate to even return the land to DC. It would be an enormous middle finger to Harris, and honestly the Senators who voted for the bill, to then say "thanks, but we're not going to use it for the purpose (even if it was subtly stated) you intended it to be used for.

But as I said, they DC Government doesn't have a good track record for working with this team. Ironically, they've been better with Ted and the Nats than with the football team, and that track record goes back 50 years. And they would have lost the Caps/Wiz if Louis from VA hadn't nuked the "Glenn Dome" in Virginia.

Well how about if it falls through the Feds decide to change the law and take it back
 
I am not sure what the incentive to do that would be other than obviously that property is worth a lot of money. But unless there were some alternative plan for that site's use, doesn't seem like there would be anyone pushing to reclaim it for Federal use?

My gut feeling is that ultimately the RFK deal will happen, there's just too much money involved and public opinion seems staunchly in favor of it.
 
An interview of the reporter, a longtime DC political beat writer, who broke the stadium deal story. Don’t discount the fact that one man, DC City Council chair Phil Mendelson, could significantly gum up the process. Like Sen. Steve Daines of Wyoming, Mendelson has the power and the position to singlehandedly seriously impact the process of approval and passage. This effort by the team and the Mayor is far from a done deal.

With certain people in power, I could see how that just might become a thing, and if so, Good for the Feds. As I said before, If DC doesn't want a storied NFL franchise that BEARS their name, then EFF'em. They deserve what they get.
 
This feels like one of those moments where Harris could subtly imply that he could outspend all council members voting against the stadium combined in a political race with a rounding error on his weekly income. Like the data I can find suggests the spending on these races is in the hundreds of thousands. Harris could outspend all of them 10 times over without batting an eye.

Combined with the fact that like 70% of the District wants this, it'd be SUPER easy to find a Dem primary challenger to the current holdouts who could unseat them.

This passes, or your political life is over.

Valid thought, but it just doesn’t feel like how Harris operates. More of a move our previous owner would make.

This stadium measure does not afford the team the runway to play a long game. There is a special election on July 15 but for only the Ward 8 seat. July 15 is also the reported deadline for the deal to be approved by the DC City Council, though the two parties could agree to extend that deadline.

Also, I actually don't think Harris WANTS to have to strongarm anybody. I'm sure there will be grandstanding, and there will be some other stuff going on, but I think he believes, in the end, common sense will prevail.

And he has lived here long enough to be familiar with the political scene.

Could the DC Counsel version of Louise come through and nuke the whole thing? Yes.

But will it? I double it.

I think this gets done with the current counsel before July 15th. I expect it to pass in June. With the caveat, nothing is certain because the DC Counsel is unpredictable and has yet to do the right thing by the team. But I haven't heard anybody like Louise coming forward to just say "over my dead body" who's going to entirely derail it. Yet.

But USA9 seems to want to derail it for some reason, so who knows. Maybe there is an undercurrent.

Ive read some stuff that if DC doesn't approve it the Feds may take the land back and then move forward without the City. And that there could be things the Federal government does to punish DC like making it illegal for the CITY to collect sales taxes on Federal property.
 
DC is a bitch to the Feds and always has been. The stadium bill will pass
 
We are talking about an ownership group that forced DAN SNYDER to sell the team, something he said he would never do and resisted until literally the waning seconds of his tenure. I have to think they aren't going to let the DC City Council submarine a new stadium deal. It's inconceivable :)

People are hand wringing over Cooke and Pratt Kelly Dixon whatever her name is now, but I think it’s not relevant. Harris and Bowser both want this done. Plus Harris is far more political than Cooke. Cooke was a great owner but was not political, at all.

The council will bluster and bloviate, but ultimately they will cave.
 
The stadium deal was completed the moment Josh Harris, Muriel Bowser, and Roger Goodell, showed up in the Oval Office with The President of the United States of America to announce the draft and tell all of America about the new stadium.

The optics and the political capital were clear and obvious to me. Yes there will be a dog and pony debate with a handful of nays, capitalizing on their big moment to gain favor with their voter base, but the idea this may not pass ended on May 5th IMO.
