UDFA thread

They are really heavy at WR I think. This was kind of my concern with Gallup, not as much the $$, it was more whether it was a favor and a waste of time and a seat in the room which is valuable. It's up their judgement of course, but that was the concern I repeated. There are only so many seats. I like guys like Crowder, and I am sure Gallup is getting a bit of extra negativity from me because of his Cowboys history (old habits), but the thing for me is I wanted the team to get younger and faster in general, and especially maybe at the WR position where our best talent is entering his 30s.

I hope Gallup is in his old form. I've been fading him because usually people who retire and try to make a comeback never really pan out.


I actually think our last WR spot is wide open for someone on the PS to make the roster.

Yes, I didn't mention it but 100% agree, dudes who have a break for multiple reasons and then attempt a comeback - there are many examples of that. It hasn't panned out in 90% of the cases. Usually if they get a delayed opportunity (Heinicke, others) that can work, but when they get the opportunity and it ends early for any reason, and then they come back? I just remember maybe 5 or 6 of those (T.O. maybe is one of the bigger examples?) attempts fizzling. You do get some that pop and then drop too depending on circumstance (Josh Gordon?). In general, though, I don't prefer the pathway to getting reps for others. It all depends on what they see, and I hope they judge with unbiased eyes.

For a team that wants to win a Super Bowl and has a short window before their QB becomes very, very expensive, I think we can trust the team to pick players who will help now. I doubt Gallup will be amazing, but I don't think it makes any sense to say that having him on the roster before training camp has cost the team anything. His roster spot would be filled by a UDFA who, like the majority of UDFAs, will have experienced the high point of his career by sitting on a practice squad for 5 weeks before getting released and never playing a single down.

How does Ja'Corey Brooks look so athletic while also looking so lacking in explosive ability. It's an enigma.

He's fluid, can quickly contort himself, at times his 2nd/3rd step buildup speed looks pretty good. But clearly ain't a burner, and has an average at best first step. So like, 1st step speed is slow, 2nd and 3rd steps have good speed, and 4th and beyond steps max out early. He's not breaking away from anybody with the ball in his hands but his YAC might still be ok?

Seems pretty worthwhile as a UDFA. Time to figure out if his awkward combo of athletic but actually not can play at the next level.

Ha, the athletic testing backed up my weird tape analysis! 10 yard split meh, 20 yard split surprisingly good, 40 back to bad.

A little surprised his vertical was that poor. On tape he leaps and contorts his body well with the ball in the air.

This TE got an invite to rookie camp this weekend. He has potential.

I know that TE blocks don't make highlight reels, but I do LOVE this guy as a receiving TE. If he can block, he would be a welcome addition.

Having said that, this guy is smooth. Some good competition for Sinnott to get his head in the game. Looks like he also got invited to Eagles mini-camp.

My eye is still on McCaffrey. The starting WRs are set but the pick of Lane and the signing of all the UDFAs plus retaining Brown and Osborn means to me that the team is less than certain Luke is going to be an impact player at this level.

McCaffrey profiled as a slot receiver but that’s exactly where Lane seems to fit in here.

One play that really stood out, against the Eagles in a huge spot, JD showed his usual full trust and dead-on accuracy. McCaffrey ended up sort of falling back to catch, but he could have aggressively pushed forward to the ball (it didn't look like he was already falling back or anything) - as a result, coverage undercut him and I think that was the late INT that could have cost us the game.

There were a few plays spread out through the season like that, just some things where he didn't seem like he had the right thought.

That’s the sort of stuff you get when you draft a positional convert who doesn’t have experience at the position in order to develop those instincts. Fixable, for some prospects. Yet to be seen with McCaffrey.
