OT Josh Simmons to visit Packers, Ravens

Former Ohio State offensive tackle Josh Simmons is a potential first-round pick in this year's draft and he's scheduled a couple of meetings with possible employers.

Looks like Simmons thinks he’s going back half of the 1st. That’s not far from our range.
 
The best thing that can happen to both players (DEs Green and Pearce, for their careers) is to fall out of the first round into the 2nd due to their character issues. They keep their nose clean with a chip on their shoulders, ball out and get the $$$ payday on their next contract.

W&M OT Charles Grant has the size and athleticism to play OT but will need a year to put on more upper body strength. He'll be an excellent get, starting at RT and transition to LT at some point.

I've been penciling in Simmons to the Texans. Dunno if that'll actually happen but it makes a lot of sense and there's a good chance he's there.

I don't think Simmons makes it to us.
 
The back we do take will be RB3 to start the season if he makes the team. If pass blocking is a weakness now, it gives them time to focus on overcoming it if they can do something else. One of the reasons why Brashard Smith is so intriguing
 
Man what luck for us if we end up with even just 3 QBs in the first. And if Dart goes too, FOUR.

Would be absolutely massive.

I'm also hoping guys like Green, Booker, Zabel, Burden, Ken Grant, Harmon, Nolan, Revel, Hairston, and Emmanwori go before 29 too. Would pretty much guarantee a really good player at a position of need dropped into our lap if those 10 + the 4 QBs went before 29.

Same, except I want Green available for us. I’d like our FO to be able to choose between some more talented edges and if they decide Green is too big a character risk, then, fine.

How much does that change how you’d view drafting him? Micah Parsons sounded like a sociopath that had SA’ed teammates.

If Pearce isn’t coachable, or doesn’t work hard, that’s a whole separate issue.

I have mixed feelings. I want to actually like our players. A lot of really good players though, just aren’t good dudes. And a lot of teams have had a lot of success blending those guys into the right kind of roster, with the right kind of coaching staff.

Interesting like McGinn's scouts, he has JT now bumped up to the early-mid 2nd. And ahead of Scourton. Ezierukau goes at 28.

Hampton goes 12. Green 15. Pearce 32 and says there are mixed opinions around the league about whether he is a first rounder.

Oladejo all the way up to 35

Booker dropped to 47

D. Walker in the 2nd round

Watts 3rd to last pick of the 2nd.

Only backs in the 2nd -- Henderson, Judkins, Kaleb Johnson

He has us taking Shemar Stewart. That's becoming at least in mocks more of a reality. I got to get to watch him. I know Chris Simms and Logan Paulsen love him.

I hate his draft for us. Shemar Stewart has had so little pass rush productivity. I feel like those guys usually don’t pan out, and when they do, it’s 3 years later. I’d way rather have Josh Simmons or James Pearce than Stewart, both of whom Kiper had available.

And Darien Porter in the second? He’s so, so raw. I get it that both guys have elite traits, but guys without a lot of experience or production, but with elite traits, to me, are mid round flyers. Not guys you spend 1st and 2nd round picks on.

I’d way rather trade our 1st for Hendrickson than draft Shemar Stewart.
 
Peters has exhibited a willingness to take flyers on high potential guys (Luke and Coleman), but also seems to really like highly productive captains. Makes it hard to guess which way he'll go.

Sure. But those were both 3rd rounders, Coleman at 67, and McCaffrey at 100. I guess 67 isn’t that different from our 2nd round pick this year, at 61.

People, myself included, keep talking about Charles Grant, from William and Mary. If we are looking at guys based on traits, I haven’t heard a lot of people talk about Logan Brown, from Kansas. He’s 6’6” and 311 pounds with 33 and 7/8” arms and 10 inch hands. He has. 9.45 RAS, ran a 5.18 40 with a 1.75 10 yard split, 32” vertical, 9’3” broad jump, 7.75 3 cone, 4.51 20 yard shuttle and 26 reps on bench. Those numbers are all very competitive with the top players and the short shuttle was the 2nd best for an OL at the combine. His PFF grade in 2024 was a very solid 82.5. Josh Connelly for comparison had a 78.3 PFF score. Brown looks like the kind of guy that is taken in the mid rounds and if molded properly, can be very successful. That’s not based on a tape review. I’ll leave that to SIP and Kdawg etc.

So, I feel the exact same way - I’d be underwhelmed in real time. But, if I was gonna play Devil’s Advocate…
1) Peters and the coaching staff believing in these two would go a long way toward making me feel a lot better about their selection.
2) Elite traits aren’t coachable (obviously). On top of that, I’d assume the staff would have vetted how coachable and driven these guys are.
3) This staff has shown a focus on putting guys into positions to succeed - taking advantage of “superpowers” and avoiding asking guys to do something they aren’t comfortable with.
4) to me, selecting these two would (further?) suggest Peters still has an eye toward the future.

And lastly, I don’t mind a swing for the fences move, particularly with this team being behind the 8 ball in terms of roster construction - ie coming out of the blue chip wasteland we’ve been in. Not saying it’s the right way to go, but I could see the logic, particularly if they mitigate the risk by feeling like they have a good handle on the prospect’s character.
 
Re: Stewart, I am trying to figure out what's up with his stats and it probably falls somewhere between "ball of potential" and maybe a bit of scheme?

Looks like A&M got pressure 40.3% of the time (22nd in FBS) but only blitzed 19.3% of the time (119th). So basically A&M was consistently trying to, and succeeding, in getting pressure with 4.

Also I wonder if him dropping some weight has improved his speed. He was listed at 290 on espn, and then waa 267 at the combine. If he played at 290 maybe it made him a tinge slower and limited his ability to finish his pressures?

I'd be happy with him at 29.

I think of the 6 guys after Carter I'd take in the first, my order of desire is something like:
- Mykel Williams
- Jalon Walker
- Donovan Ez
- Shemar Stewart
- James Pearce Jr.
- Mike Green (too much smoke)
 
I honestly wouldn’t mind a super boring move, like Gray Zabel, at 29. An OL of Tunsil, Zabel, Biadasz, Cosmi, and whichever RT, would be a super, super strong unit. A big weakness turned into a strength in 1 season.
