I'm saying 6-9 TIMES the VET MINIMUM when Vet Minimum is close to 1 MILL a year is GREED if the true intention is the Lombardi.

For your argument to hold water, you need to find examples of the comparable players who are signing vet minimum deals for other teams because of their sense of duty and loyalty. I don't think they exist....

We all remember the glory years, but you are advocating for a business model that DOES NOT EXIST in the current NFL. If you know how to convince modern NFL players to play for minimum salary, you should work in an NFL front office.... you'd get paid alot (which of course you'd refuse out of your sense of intense loyalty to the fan base).

Especially for players who aren’t even under contract for 2025.

The NFL is a business. Sure players want to win. But they want to get paid just as much if not more. Some of the top end guys will take a very little less to stay where they are, or will restructure, and help out their team.

But this idea of sacrificing personal wealth for the good of the team or attempt at winning a SB, it doesn’t exist in this reality.

True Free Agency and the salary cap didn’t exist then. Some of those guys had summer jobs.

Why do you post these ideas so confidently? You almost never have a clue what you’re talking about and derail threads for pages at a time.

To your point, Conn - when I was quite young, we had two visitors to my 3rd grade class one day: Harold McClinton and Ted Vactor (both starting defensive players for the Redskins in the mid-70’s). And, do you know what they were doing? It was the off-season, and they were working their second jobs as spokesmen for the DC metro system.

Two starting defensive players on an NFL team promoting the benefits of the local subway system in a suburban DC elementary school to a bunch of 3rd graders today would probably qualify them for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

Today’s NFL is a completely different animal than when I was a kid. There are players who are loyal and dedicated to their team, to their coaches, to winning a Super Bowl, and to the fans, but they also want to be paid fairly and appropriately and not have to work a second job, especially when their teammates and counterparts are making as much money as they can. I don’t have a problem at all with that attitude, and wish that I could be a football player and make the ridiculous amount of money that they earn (something about graduating from high school, topping out at about 120 lbs., made me look at a different profession, unfortunately …).

Commanders are starting over as an organization with new management.

Loyalty to the degree it is there any longer in the sport will be reflected in what players this group drafts and trades for and how those players perform over a number of years.

2024 was a big surprise to me in re wins and I think more than anyone in Ashburn expected.

But again it’s one year.

If I am the owner or GM I don’t fall in love with the roster and just bring all of the 30 plus year old vets back on new deals because of 2024.

Wagner’s return is fine. He can still play and will do better with fewer snaps behind a better defensive line.

At the same time I am glad the team cut bait on Jonathan Allen. He’s a declining player who still anticipates a new deal with decent guaranteed money.

Based on what he has done on the field the past 2 years, no thanks.

Zack Ertz? He had a very productive year in a comeback many doubted. I would look to bring him back for 2025 but on a medium one year deal at age 35.

We need to find a younger answer at TE and if there’s doubt about Sinnott we need to look to add more talent to the room.

I would cut Wylie and and Payne if the dead money wasn’t this prohibitive.

Even though Ron and Danny Boy made few moves those last couple of years it figures the few they did make - the signing of Wylie and the outsized deal for Payne would screw us and make us carry them as they underperform those deals.

While signing Morgan Moses may be a low cost move for 2025 that could work out, I would still be looking to add OTin the draft for 2026.

I think you can find some examples of that still, but it's rare. It's also a different era. It is true that end the end of the glory years, Gibbs did work with Plan B free agents, but he didn't have to work with the salary cap so it made it easier to keep veterans a long time and sometimes past their due date.

Even so, if you look carefully at the Gibbs roster, I think you will be surprised at how much churn there was at running back, wide receiver, and even among the Hogs. We did have a core that we kept together, but Vernon, Dean, Barry Wilburn, and a host of others kept being shuffled in and out as the second corner. It started with Butz and Grant, but didn't end with them. Charlie Brown and Alvin Garrett were replaced by the Posse and neither Art Monk nor Brian Mitchell played their last games as Redskins.
