Tell the Truth Monday- 2024 End of Season Edition

Truth: it was a blessing to get all the way to January 26th without thinking once about the draft. Normally in these parts, draft conversations get rolling around the second week of October. We were blessed to witness fun and competitive football again - it was so long overdue. While there is a ton of work to be done roster-wise, our spirit is renewed as a franchise and fanbase.

Truth--- I doubt we put a true stake in the word "paloff" but I was so glad to see it go.

To your point about the rookies, I agree, lot of question marks there. Going to be interesting to see if/how they contribute going forward. I do think a fair few of them just had an uphill battle to earn time (which is good of course). For me, this year felt different in that I didn’t have the feeling that we needed one or more late rounders or UDFAs to play a big role.

I know they like Magee, but with Luvu and Wagner staying healthy, and Magee missing significant time, not surprising he didn’t wind up seeing the field much.
Hampton had a similar problem in the sense that guys ahead of him stayed healthy, but he was also (seemingly) switching positions.
McCaffrey got a good amount of time early, not sure what happened there, but the vets (mostly) took over, and he’s still new to the position.
JJB got fairly significant time. We didn’t see too much impact from him (he had a few moments), but he was also a 7th rounder, so hard to judge at this point.
Sinnot was understandably behind two vets. Shame we didn’t see him make more of an impact, but TE is often a slow burn position.
Owens was the one post-3rd round guy that stood out to me. Looked good on teams and was impactful in the preseason. Safety was one of our few spots with quality depth though. Would be great to see his role increase in the future.

If AP and scouts did indeed put a heavy emphasis on hard working, high football IQ draftees, the environment DQ put in place should help nurture these young guys. In other words, hopefully the combo of quality coaching and excellent vet examples ahead of them leads to some of these guys becoming quality depth, contributors, or even starters down the line.

And if it doesn’t play out that way and we wind up with 2 high end starters (Daniels and Sainristil) and 2 roughly decent starters (Newton and Coleman), that’s still a win. Heck, you could argue that just landing a high end qb makes it a home run.

Hampton is the guy most likely to get cut in preseason in my opinion. I want to say he was a healthy scratch every game. The reason he was moved from safety to LB was because Owens came in as a UDFA and outperformed for the safety gig, pushing him to LB as a means of keeping him on the roster.

Owens has the potential to be a beast if he can stay on the field.

I had the chance to watch the game with some fellow coaches. About 10 of us. I was the only Skins fan there and they were all fired up for me as they know how big a fan I am. Before the game started and we had hashed out so many things that played against us in this match up (as if we knew all the necessary details), they put me on the spot and asked me what was the 1 thing that deflated my hopes and be specific. My answer, after thinking about it was pretty damn basic but for a good reason. I said turnovers. We could not lose the field position battle in this game. Playing vs a fired up, home team who doesn't suck and we were missing two crucial 'warriors' in Payne and Cosmi vs their crew, gave our shot at winning a very small chance. But bigger than expected. I knew JD5 could negate, even vs these guys, 1 TO. But, multiple TO and giving up ugly field position, just didn't do us any favors and our guys inexperience just made it so we couldn't take a punch. It happens. The Eagles stayed steady and kept applying pressure on all our weak spots. Hats off to them for beating a team they should have. But we'll keep receipts.

Honestly, this game had the very same feeling, for those of you old enough, when the Bulls lost to the Pistons in 90 to lose the series 4-3. You just knew, with a few changes here and there, that was when the Bulls were going to take the next step. They just had to experience what it was like to be on the cusp or at least certain guys needed the experience so they could go further. This feels like the same thing. Our men got a taste of this, the key ones and now, when you go into that locker room next year, there is only 1 main goal so now the day to day work has its importance and drive. Now we find, grow and insert to make us stronger. Like last year, we find the right guys to add to the team. The best part is after a 12 win season, we have very specific details for our hunt and as you all know, knowledge is KING. We are in such a great damn position.

I mean, 31 out of 32 teams feel like the way we did Monday. Every year. But how many of them would switch with us right now?

I think the Eagles are not 3 touchdowns better than us.

When a good team makes mistakes against a very good team, things snowball.

The most frustrating thing was after the ‘Skins pulled to within 2 at 12-14, the next time Daniels touched the ball, they were down 12-27 with 39 seconds left in the half.

It was TD, fumble on the kickoff, TD.

That’s basically where the game was lost. We needed to keep giving Daniels opportunities to score and we didn’t.

Then we needed the Eagles to make a mistake. And they never did.

That’s basically where the game was lost.

That was one point in the game. The other was when Ekeler fumbled after we had closed it to 34-23. They made Philly punt, then Ekeler fumbled. We could have made it 34-31 on that drive. That one was even still in the 3rd quarter. We were down 27-14 in the 4th quarter in the 5 turnover game we beat Philly so it wasn't out of control at 34-23.

I agree with both of you. I think Kliff had a great plan for a 4 qtr game to keep it close. I think we knew they were going to get their shots in with both Brown and Barkley. The main job was to not give them more chances with great field position. I would tell you, we made everyone sit up in their seats when it went 34-23 and forcing them to punt. I think that one was the gut punch our guys allowed that brought just enough doubt and forced guys to try and do just a little more. I don't blame AE for it at all because I fully expected him to be a crucial part of our shot at winning and he is more than capable. I just dropped my head and all I could say was 'damnit'. Like losing the grip on the rope thats pulling you out of the water and your not a great swimmer.

Also, while annoyed that we made the switch to put Mikey on Brown, I have no concerns with Lattimore. What a tough situation to come into with expectations at such an enormous level. One thing about the great DBs that you learn as a coach. They have fantastic feet and Lattimore has that. However, when your legs are failing you so in turn your confidence starts to shake ever so slightly, you grab and you use your next great asset and for him its being physical. I guarantee you he wanted to be that guy so bad once he started getting a chance to prove himself on the field, but he didn't have the run up with our success so he handled the situation he was in a little different than our other guys would based on the success we earned through the weeks of training and playing. An offseason with this crew and I think its safe to say he'll prove his worth. And Mikey will get better, but he needs to be moved back inside until he trusts his speed and how to position himself. All our rookies, after an NFL offseason worth of training, are going to look different. Pretty exciting to see that play out.

Losing sucks and for them that locker room will be different. It is every team every year. We take long term looks but each team gets 1 season. So, feel bad about that.

We need a reliable kicker. Maybe Gonzales is that. I don’t know. But whoever that is next season needs to be reliable.

Defense needs a lot of work.

Offensive line looked better cause they had a stud qb. More work needed here.

Need a running game. Maybe that happens if you just fix the line.

The nature of fandom dictates next season will have lofty expectations and a hot start will breed arrogance about it which is a recipe for disappoint in the playoffs.

That said … the good…

Hell of a season! Everyone should be stoked. If you ranked out all scenarios, there’s only 2 better than what we got. Making the Super Bowl and winning it. Hell we even got our QB out of all this.

And some damn confidence and swagger.

Kingsberry appears to be staying. This is great news. Please stop with the cute shit otherwise great job out there.

We have a smart coach. Dan Quinn understands how to manage a game. And he understands how to lead grown men. He understands how to talk to the media. Clearly quality people like working for him.

Adam Peters.

Franchise got a cash injection.

RFK site.

An article about Snyder being mad - which includes tidbits about how he tried to sabotage the sale 😂

I went to Detroit for the game

This season was awesome. I’m nothing but smiles. And I sorta like this no expectations thing. Gonna try it out again next year.

We played 20 games this season.

In the 17 non-Philly games we turned the ball over a total of ten times.

In the 3 Philly games we turned the ball over a total of ten times.

They pay the other guys too. Philly led the league in forced fumbles. This is something we'll need to better account for next year when we play them.

This is EXACTLY the correct observation. We lost to Philly because we let them knock the ball out the hands of our skill players…. We score on all those drives, were within 3 points in the final quarter. Biggest issue of the whole game, besides the run D being melted butter…..

Hell, we were down 34-23 with the ball and driving for a TD to possibly make it 34-31 when Ekeler had the 3rd fumble.

Even -2 in turnovers we have a good shot at beating them. Even with the refs we had a good shot.

Philly is going to be in trouble in the future. They have 1 shot at a 🏆.

It'll be us and Philly battling it out for the NFC East in the next few years. The other teams have a lot of fixing to do.

Yeah, the talent in Philly is pretty ridiculous and they just recently added 2 possibly elite corners and those DTs the years before so their defense is also young.

Barkley seems like a good dude but hopefully he drops off quickly. Don't need him to be hanging around like Derrick Henry. Also Hurtz is begging for season ending injuries with his play style.

They're absolutely stacked, and always seem to hit when replacing players. We've got a competent FO now, so I'm looking forward to that being us for a long while. The Giants have GOT to feel dumber than dumb for letting Barkley go to the Eagles, and perform so incredibly. I'm happy for him being somewhere where he can really accomplish something.

I agree to a degree, but WE also have quite a bit to do & some hard decisions ahead. We used a lot of bandaids this year that we may not have next year. Free agency & the draft this year will be critical for our progression to the years going forward. This is a very important offseason, especially since we won QB roulette last year. Looking forward to it!

No doubt, I'm with ya on that! Let's hope we continue to get this stuff right, moving forward. I have confidence in this regime. Refreshing to see us run like a real, bona fide professional organization again, at all levels.

If we had signed Barkley last off-season, would we be headed to the SB now? Probably.
This is really interesting, because I don't think he would have been nearly as successful here; this due to the different OL but also the scheme. Kliff just i not going to prioritize the run the way they do in Philly. That is something I fully believe.

However, what makes it particularly interesting is that yes he would have been used and he would have been better than anything we had, AND he also would NOT have been on the Eagles.

Last point, though; he apparently took a lower offer to join the Eagles. The fit was there, and he knew it, and they knew it. I don't know what kind of offer could have been made to top that; not sure.
