Well done, gents. Sorry I missed out!
What I had intended to do last night was offer my take on why I thought the team either will or will not draft one of the three guys at #2. Not a long list of things—that’s too easy after the months of over-analysis—one thing. The main thing.
Jayden Daniels
If they DO … it’s because he could be Superman. He runs like a cheetah and is a calm accurate passer with a quicksilver release. His ridiculous improvement arc in college shows he can and will learn and improve, and his apparent work ethic suggests he can continue to improve at the next level. You don’t pass on that with the #2 overall pick.
If they DON’T … it’s because his Chris-like build could be kryptonite.
Drake Maye
If they DO … it’s because he’s what an NFL QB is supposed to look like—from the frame to the hose—and makes those wow throws that translate to the next level. And oh yeah apparently he’s a total competitive freak. All this despite being just 21, losing his senior year in HS to Covid and starting only two years in college with little surrounding talent and changing coaches.
If they DON’T … it’s because all the NFL analysts, QB gurus and internet geniuses combined can’t figure out why the fuck he scatters passes too often. There is apparently no one correctable flaw causing it, which is a huge red flag as it may not BE correctable. End of the day he might turn out to be a sawed-off shotgun instead of a reliable, precision shooting instrument you'd be comfortable going into battle with.
J.J. McCarthy
If they DO … it’s because he wears a
Golden Helmet. J.J. has the measurables just fine, thank you very much. He also has the “it” in terms of leadership and team-first mentality. The new regime has been telling us since Peters was hired that’s what they’re looking for. We should believe them.
If then DON’T … it’s because despite playing well in a pro-style offense against top competition (both on game day and in daily practice), the sample size of his tape is scary small in context of a #2 overall pick. NFL defensive coordinators WILL find his flaws/weaknesses—there is precious little hard evidence on tape as to how/whether he can zig once the zag is gone.
