Coaching staff thread

I suspect during the interview process, Kingsbury knocked it out of the park on what he learned from and since his time at AZ. The optics on him are all over the place. I think this is a good thing because I bet they walked out of the interview saying he has both feet squarely on the ground and he can help this team. I still trust the process.

Now for the QB and #2 pick. I think way too costly to move up one spot regardless of this hire with the gaps we want to fill with fresh bodies.

I would pay to be in that room.

I wouldn't be shocked if a deal for Williams is already agreed to in principle with Chicago.

So - I'm not saying they aren't going in that direction... but why are we so sure that his relationship with Caleb Williams automatically means that's who Kingsbury WANTS under center in DC? Isn't it possible his experience with Caleb Williams have convinced him of the exact opposite?

I'm just wondering if that's possible.

Also possible that the hiring has nothing to do with any plans to move up - and is more based on his history of getting great performances out of young QBs.

3 year deal. Interesting...

I really want the Dan Quinn hire to work like the rest of us. If for some reason it doesn't, and Kingsbury does a nice job of at the very least developing the QB here, you have to think that Washington could potentially serve as an in back into the head coaching ranks if he so desires down the road. Who knows...

I have a feeling that if Quinn doesn’t work, the term of Kingsbury means he’s got 2 shots. A 3 year deal means it’s easy to get out of after 2, so if it blows up, Quinn gets a second chance. If Quinn blows up, there’s no long term commitment to the OC

I think the skill players are going to be real excited about this announcement. A high flying offense means the potential of big plays. We will see if that materializes, but the thought of what it can be is pretty exciting to those guys.

Well, I don't know much about Whitt, but obviously Dan Quinn does. Fingers crossed. 2 down, 1 coordinator spot to go.

Life comes at you fast....

Nice to see us being aggressive in getting Quinn's guy.

Not to inflate this, but they were all world in interceptions in 2023...

That said, they've been susceptible in the past to getting gashed in the pass game... so we will see how this plays out.

Man - this is one exciting time to be a fan of this team. Massive change was needed, and we are getting massive change.

The news about Kingsbury is only a few hours old and I am already tired of fans hyping his "relationship" with Williams and claiming this means we already have an agreement with the Bears.

It is going to be a long 81 days and 20-some-odd-hours till the first round kicks off.

*sigh*

I might have to hide from the internet.

I sort of hope that if the Bears are going to do a deal, that they do it early and then all we have to worry about is WHO that team with the first pick is taking.

When I daydreamed about what Washington would look like in January, I pictured the up and comers. Peters (or someone like him), married to the next McVay or McDaniels with probably a gray beard DC just to have someone to calm the waters when they got choppy because you need someone who's been there and seen it all. As I wake up to this reality, I see we opted almost for the opposite of my daydream. Instead of an up and comers collection, we opted for redemption. Quinn and Kingsbury both are potential redemption stories. Do they have a chip on their shoulders? Are they hungry to prove themselves after failing in their first go?

There's something to be said for experience and learning from mistakes. I can imagine a narrative where these guys make good even if they were both probably second or third tier choices in January. One thing I feel better about is that I thought Kingsbury quit. He didn't. He was fired by the Cardinals. He appears to have backed out of an agreement with the Raiders, but I don't know the reason why or at what stage. Kingsbury also seems to have had some juice this season as at least one other team wanted to hire him. Same with Whitt. For whatever reason, I'm most pleased about Whitt. Dallas' secondary and pass defense has been excellent. Ours was awful. I think St. Juste, Forbes, Martin, and Kurl could really benefit from better coaching and scheming. People say that Forbes was overdrafted and that he should have been a second rounder. Well, second rounders still should be at worst solid starters.

Back to coaching, getting what you want is not always getting what you need. The Snyder years proved that. We had so many exciting hires in coaching, free agency, etc and they routinely failed. Maybe that's the reason not getting what I daydreamed about doesn't sting. It may turn out well. It may turn out for the best. After all, a good redemption story can be as compelling as a Chosen One story.

Two more thoughts:

One: As slow as the Head Coach search seemed to be, the hunt for coordinators was a rocketship. Clearly, these are the two Quinn wanted.
Two: The hiring of Kingsbury allows Quinn to develop a Gibbs model in that he can basically give Kingsbury his fiefdom and trust him while focusing most of his energy on the defense. That part, sounds very good to me especially since Quinn said his downfall was trying to spin too many plates at the end of his tenure in Atlanta.

I feel pretty ok about Kingsbury for a few reasons. #1. The supposed organizational structure of Washington now. This isn't coach-centric. I do believe that Quinn reports to Peters and while technically Kingsbury reports to Quinn. He will also be working with Peters and Shen to identify what they want to do and how to get the talent to do it. #2. Arizona with the exception of a few bright spots, have been the worst run org for the past century. It's amazing how the Bidwells' aren't hit more for this. #3. Peters said at his presser that this isn't a quick fix. He directly referred to the tough days in SanFran when they got there. I have zero doubt that every coach and front office guy they bring in....player too.....is told this and they acknowledge that 2024 could not be fun in the W/L column. But that they are making a plan and will stick with it and this time next year, will probably be able to purge more guys who don't fit but they couldn't dump for this season, along with having another draft/FA period.

Nothing about this is exciting in a "we're going to be awesome right now" way. It feels deliberate and pragmatic.

Some interesting tidbits (sorry if mentioned already):
- UNC runs Air Raid apparently (both Howell AND Maye excelled in it)
- Kingsbury modified the Air Raid to have more running; in 2020 and 2021 AZ ranked 6th and 7th in rushing attempts per game, so the word is that it has more balance.

As for that second point, I hope it's accurate! The only thing that concerns me there is if those stats are padded with QB runs and scrambles.
