Unless Weaver really impressed in the interview a complete rebuild usually has a veteran voice at the top.

The team doesn't seem interested in Vrabel.

And it doesn't appear as if Washington made any aggressive attempts to preempt Seattle and grab MacDonald.

8 openings, about 400 coaches in the NFL and this team can't come up with a solution in 3 plus weeks of 100% concentration on the opening while all the other 7 are filled?

This to me seems a bit like paralysis by analysis.

If I were the owner of the team I would have told Peters to bring me a list of the coaches HE would want to see here and set up interviews where Peters went ONE on ONE with them and then brought me a short list of 1-2 finalists, who I would then meet with.

This team is operating now too much like a Senate Sub-Committee.

Makes me wonder if a young and upcomer coach doesn't want to be part of an overhaul? Of course, not many new coaches will find a situation where an overhaul isn't needed.

The irony is, it’s taken 3+ weeks to narrow our options down to the only 3 candidates who got zero votes in our site poll on HC preferences.

But this organization tripping over their collective d**** has been so public and watched it's going to be hard to avoid the questions that come with it.

Unless this team pulls a rabbit out of the hat, it's already viewed as a first step failure to maximize TIME.

These guys have been focused on this for WEEKS and allowed perfectly qualified coaches to be snapped up by other teams in chase of the mythical unicorn.

By the time Ben Johnson told them 'no thanks' Washington should have had a 1A candidate ready to trot out and introduce to the public and media.

I suppose someone in the room failed to notice Johnson's apparently ambivalent attitude towards taking a head coaching job during this cycle.

Whether it was the money, the desire to stay with the Lions or something else I can't believe his behavior was so positive in that interview that it completely masked his feelings.

I am not even sure Harris needed to be involved - wtf does he know about what it takes to be a winning HC?

That’s what it feels like to me. Seems like letting the whiz kid GM pick his guy would have been a lot better approach. But I guess Bob Myers didn’t like that idea.

It appears the Washington ownership and front office group has conducted all of these interviews and concluded that NONE of the coaches identified are 100% perfect

Now what?

Ownership needs to look at the Dodgers who also have a partnership structure and stop trying to have a hundred voices in the room over these decisions.

Owners with a small, minority stake don't need to be there IMO.

And now that we have Peters we don't need Spielman and the other 'search committee' folks for GM as part of the coach search.

I don’t want EB as part of any coaching formula.

I don’t see anything he did in 2023 that recommends him.

For some reason this guy has developed cult status around here because he carried the clipboard for Andy Reid for 5 years.

He didn’t call plays though so in terms of game day experience he is where Slowik is.

He’s 55 years old in a job where most candidates are 20 years younger and more relatable to today’s players.

If he was such a great mind Reid would have given him play calling responsibilities at some point as Don Coryell did with Joe Gibbs.

My comment was clear if the new head coach wants him to be the OC I think that is fine. But here is a thought how if we draft Drake Maye do we hire the passing game coord or OC from NC to be the OC or passing game coord here since both QBs on the roster will have played for them

If a new head coach comes in here and wants EB to be the OC then I have to question his judgment.

2023 was a far more painful season literally and figuratively for Sam Howell and Co. then it had to be.

When I looked at Howell in those last 4-5 games I saw a player that like Jared Goff in 2021 needs to have his confidence restored and given an NFL playbook in reasonable doses to digest and make progressions from.

A smart OC doesn't merely take an offense from one team and imprint it on another.

Joe Gibbs came here and realized after going 0-5 and having Joe Theismann turn the ball over that the San Diego offense was not going to work here in DC and he needed to change his approach to the personnel.

The fact EB did absolutely nothing different after Howell's midseason swoon to try and right the ship but doubled down on the approach he used in the past only tells me he is a guy channeling the X's and O's that Andy Reid taught him.

One reason this might be the case is that EB never called the plays in Kansas City.

So, he was not the one making the decisions with the game on the line and a game-plan that was not working and needed to be modified, etc.

Yes, he watched others do it but he never did it himself.

And that to me is problematic. Even though EB is 55 years old he has called plays for exactly the same amount of seasons as Bobby Slowik in Houston.

Call me crazy (wouldn’t be the first time) but I think Atlanta is a better HC opportunity than Washington. All they need is a QB.

Would you trade the 2nd pick to atl for their 1st ( number 8) and their 2nd this year and 1st next year?

I would take Vrabel over any other prior head coaches
I would take Anthony Weaver over any non head coach

I would remind folks that Atlanta lost to Washington this season. I don't know they are that close. Although I do have respect for Raheem Morris and his ability to make players perform better than they did in 2023 in the upcoming season.

We seem to have ruled Morris out relatively early in the process (when Atlanta was talking to Belichick), I hope that is not a mistake that comes back to bite us.

One question for those that want to trade the #2 pick:

What happens if we don't find a quarterback in the 2024 draft, Howell after additional time in 2024 is NOT found to be the answer and then we are back in 2025 looking for a quarterback except this time we have perhaps the #10 pick which falls outside of the range to get one of the top prospects?

Do we then trade up?

I guess what I am asking is whether we are just kicking the can down the road and only helping out another team like Atlanta get better while we remain in last place in the NFC East.

In case anyone has forgotten Washington was 0-6 in the NFC East this season.

I agree 100%. Dan Campbell's ridiculous decision making is a prime example. The fans aren't privy to mind numbing analytics that cloud the judgement of coaches and GMs (like rivercrap ron). Therefore they tend to have pretty good judgement as a group.

I have no real opinion of the next HC. One person, who I can't understand why he is getting no hype as a HC is Steve Wilks. Killing it as a DC at San Fran. Coached here under Gibbs. Did a fantastic job as an interim at Carolina. Seems worth an interview.

Well the interview room has how many people in it?
At least in the second round, which seems to be where things are going south (they had many second rounders move on to other opportunities fairly quickly):
Magic Johnson (??? Why ???)
Josh Harris
Peters
Hurney
Myers
Spielman
Rales (?? Is he there too? There were some reports of that)


So, analysis paralysis?? Yes, very likely. It's probably hard to get that many people to agree on much of anything, especially with egos at play and other potential issues.
I didn't mind the idea of Myers and Spielman helping, but this should have been Peters' show after that hire. It doesn't smell that way. It has a Snyder-ish smell right now; just feeling like there are lots of fingers in the pot that don't belong.

Great point. Maybe they are secretly waiting on him, with the Peters connection. Crazier things have happened.
