Your Head Coach preference?

Here’s a thought…

Today I was thinking about this and suddenly realized how my goalposts have shifted. When we recruited Rivera there was a definite feeling that no coach in their right mind would want to come to Washington. Rivera seemed the best we could do at the time, so I was happy and optimistic.

Now, with Snyder gone and Harris in, and the fact we got the best GM prospect out there (and I don’t mean the best of a bad bunch!) I’m now coming around to the fact that Washington is a premier destination suddenly in NFL circles.

So much so, that I started to look at this picture differently.

Now I’m starting to look at the names out there and thinking how disappointed I’d be if we landed them and not one of the top dogs.

Like, I think I’d be disappointed if we got EB as head coach. Or Quinn.

I feel like I want the best. I want a young up and comer.

Are there coaches out there that if we recruited them you’d be genuinely disappointed? And if we didn’t land one of the ‘top prospects’ would it shake any fledgling trust you have in Harris/Peters?

Someone needs to explain this to me like I’m 5. I have so many questions.

Starting Jan. 22 (the day after the divisional round ends):

• Teams can conduct in-person or virtual interviews with candidates employed by other NFL teams whose seasons ended.
• Teams cannot hold initial interviews with candidates employed by teams participating in the AFC and NFC championship games until the end of the employer team’s season. Second interviews are not allowed until Jan. 29. A candidate’s employer team may not voluntarily grant permission for those interviews.

Starting Jan. 29 through Feb. 4 (the bye week between conference championships and the Super Bowl):

• Second interviews, either in-person or virtual, are allowed with head coach candidates employed by teams in the Super Bowl. The team(s) conducting the interviews must notify the employer team(s).

Contact with head coach candidates in the Super Bowl is not allowed from Feb. 4 to Feb. 12, the day after the Super Bowl.

So - based on what I've read - once the Wildcard games were over all candidates (whether in the playoffs or not) could be interviewed virtually OR in person. The prohibition on in-person interviews for playoff coaches until the Divisional Playoff round is over doesn't start until the next cycle according to what I've read.

What I don't know and can't seem to find is if a team can make an offer to a HC candidate or finalize a contract if the coach is still involved in the playoffs. I have not seen anything indicating they can't - but I don't know for sure.

I don't know. But my understanding is that the rules changes that were voted on in the most recent league meetings don't go into effect until 'the next cycle'. I suspect the text you are quoting applies to next season, not this one. But again, I'm not 100% sure.

And I'll say again, the reporting by all of our media reps absolutely sucks on this front. They should be all over what can and can't happen but they seem as confused as we are

That is from a The Athletic article dated Jan 10 of this year. There is no mention of future changes. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Gannon got hired by the Cardinals less than 48 hours after they lost in the Super Bowl.

From what i've seen (i'm struggling to find the article), you cannot officially hire a coach until that team's season is over. you can interview all you want, but hiring is a no-no.

EB is not even a top 10 offensive coordinator at this point. I can't think of any rationale for handing over the head coaching reigns to him when we may have the pick of guys who are? He had a chance to prove himself this season and fell very short. I like him, but hard pass.

Bieniemy is 55 years old and has been calling plays for one year. How does that put him near the top of any list for a HC spot?

The danger with Bieniemy is the same we have seen with a lot of New England defensive assistants who got jobs but who were running Bill Belichick's system while Bill was looking over their shoulders.

Andy Reid designed the offense in KC and never turned the responsibilities for calling plays over to Eric, despite his years of service and knowledge of the system and team concepts.

I see Bieniemy in the same light as a Matt Patricia or Romeo Crennel, guys that had trouble translating the 'Patriot Way' to other teams once they left New England.

Bieniemy has some of that 'we did it this way in KC' type mentality and I don't think that was necessarily helpful to him here in 2023 with Sam Howell and the talent on this particular offensive unit.

One knows how to run the ball, develop a QB and win.
The other one hasn't shown any of that in his time here.

I am kind of shocked by that post ST. He's done nothing unless you attribute KC's success to him (which I think most would view as a pretty big stretch). Harbaugh is highly accomplished.
