Yeah, JP Finlay has been all over the Hurney/Harris connection. My $.02 is Harris needed somebody to talk to about how the league operated, and that person was Hurney. However, when he put the advisory committee together, I think Spielman might have taken that spot.

I doubt Hurney stays in any capacity, but who knows. I don't think Harris is going to put his finger on the scale for any guy. I give Mayhew the nod only because he and Peters worked together in SF, and Peters is going to need a guy in a "Senior Personnell guy who works for the GM and talks to agents" role, and quickly. The quickest path to getting somebody in that role will be to retain Mayhew. Bigger question would be if Mayhew wants to take the role.

We'll see. I think whatever is going to happen there is going to happen pretty quickly.
 
Mayhew didn't exactly have a stellar record at Detroit as GM without Rivera. If he hangs on to collate files and sort videos because he's Peters' amigo, then fine. It sucks Ron pushed out Kyle Smith for these guys.
 
My guess is Mayhew stays through the draft as most front office contracts run through the next draft, so the teams don't lose 9 months of prep work on prospects coming out of college.

After the draft then you will see an exodus of guys as Peters brings in all of his own people.

Mayhew may be a guy that stays, who knows?

Again, Mayhew may have told Rivera to draft Justin Herbert and Rivera was determined to go with Chase Young all along and wouldn't listen to any other voices.

This stuff won't come out until the offseason and new league year.

Mayhew did "ok" in Detroit, and was really liked in San Fran based on what I've heard for the role he was in.

I think the bigger shame for Ron than pushing out Kyle Smith (who I still think is somewhat overrated) is he brought in Hurney and Mayhew and never defined roles for himself or either of them, so nobody knew what the hell they were doing, and it was just a mish-mashy mess. I literally have NO IDEA what Mayhew actually did. And from the reports, Ron went to Hurney for personnel stuff, and Mayhew was basically an administrator.

For all we know, Mayhew could be good at a job and be useful. I'm trusting Peters to know that and figure out what should be done.
 
The other guy I'm somewhat curious about the timeline for him departing and who replaces him: Rob Rodgers, who is essentially the cap/contracts guy. I wonder if that is the role Mayhew ends up filling, because he might be really good at that. Or, they get somebody from outside. I'm not sure what Eric Schaffer is doing these days, but he was pretty good at it, and Chris Russell would get one of his sources back. I doubt we're hiring the other two sources he's had through the years, Haslett or Manusky.

As a side note, my guy Russell has a tendency to pick bad coaches and somewhat irrelevant front office people to court as sources.

For those getting used to my sarcasm, hiring Schaffer back was 100% sarcasm.
 
This ownership group is trending younger in terms of hires, so Marty Hurney (age 66) likely won't be part of the organization going into the 2024 season.
 
Being liked and being viewed as the best at what you do are completely different things. If Peters doesn’t see Mayhew as a difference-making guy, he won’t keep him. I don’t think that there’s a lot of evidence he is a difference making guy.

Chris Russell is one of the least knowledgeable and connected DC sports personalities in the business. He seems to always want to have the ‘hot take’ which more often than not results in him having a ridiculous take.

Listening to him I have a hard time understanding what he’s arguing about. He’s a contrarian clown.
 
Well, here's to hoping we're headed down the path of relevance. I've checked out the last few seasons. I want to be excited again. New Ownership, and now a promising real GM. Dare I let myself back in?
