Official Game Thread - Week 13 - vs Dolphins

Howell (2023) - 509 ATT w/ 14 INT & 58 Sacks or 1 INT every 36 ATTs & 1 Sack 9 ATTs

Wentz (2022) - 276 ATT w/ 9 INT & 26 Sacks or 1 INT every 30 ATTs & 1 Sack every 10 ATTs

Heinicke (2022) - 259 ATT w/ 6 INT & 19 Sacks or 1 INT every 43 ATTs & 1 Sack every 14 ATTs

I pulled these numbers just for my own edification. I find them interesting. Sam's numbers though are really the tail of two halves of the season.

First 7 games he averaged almost 6 sacks a game.

The last 6 games he has averaged 3 sacks a game.

Over that same 7 game/6 game split he has thrown 7 INTs in both. The interesting thing to me is that in both halves he has one horrible game - 4 INTs against Buffalo in the first half and 3 INTs against NYG in the second half.

A number of INTs have come late in games when he is pressing, trying to push the team up the field for a comeback, where he just tried to do too much. At least 2 have come from Sam half-throwing the ball away instead of putting it in the stands.

In short, for a young man in his 3rd offense in 3 years, he is showing improvement.

I currently believe that next year he will find himself in his 4th offense in 4 years. Through no fault of his own.

Trent Green only played 1 full season in DC (and had been bouncing around in the CFL and NFL for 4 years before he got to us - not exactly a comparable situation to Howell). In that one full season, he completed just 55% of his passes, compared to Howell's 66%. His INT rate was 2.2 compared to Howell's 2.8, and his TD rate was 4.5% to Sam's 3.5%. Trent threw for 3441 yds which Howell has already exceeded this year (but of course, it's a very different NFL today).

I don't think you can make the case that Green was 'much better'. He was promising and talented like Howell. I think we should feel pretty good about Howell given his experience level. It's not close to perfect but few young QBs are, and neither are the greats (Pat Mahommes threw a pick 6 last night).

It doesn't matter if you are a 2nd year QB or a 10 year veteran.....a starting QB cannot go 0 - 3 against the worthless 2 - 8 Bears and the worthless 0 - 4 Giants.

Howell had to win at least two of those three games to stake his claim as a future starting QB for this team. Instead, he played absolutely dreadful in all 3 games. It's inexcusable.

Competent QB play matters. It's the most important position on the field, by far.

Heinicke wins at least 2 of those 3 games against the Giants and Bears....Heinicke NEVER lost to bad teams during 2021 & 2022.

So Howell's learning curve gets to stretch into eternity? At some point, Howell has to win the winnable games against the bad teams. And he hasn't done it, at least not enough.

This team had one of the easiest schedules in the NFL during weeks 1 - 11 and the best Howell could do was 4 - 7. That's just not good enough.

At some point? The young man doesn't even have a full season of games under his belt.

He has won more of his first 14 games than Aikman did and Troy is in the HOF.

3 games that the defense absolutely let down the offense, all of which we had leads in the 4th quarter, so if you're going to cherry pick the 3 bad games he had, you should probably open the thought process up regarding some of the others that were not lost on his shoulders. To say the best he could do was 4-7 is comical when he had nothing to do with 3 of those 7 losses. Were the Bills / Giants games bad? Yeah, were all of the losses his fault? Nope.

Because I'm explaining how those 3 games were very winnable with a competent QB, but not with Howell they weren't.

And he played extremely well in the 3 games I pointed out and the team also lost. I agreed that he didnt play well in those games, but there were also 3 turnovers in that 2nd Giants game that had nothing to do with Sam. He also didn't give up 40 to Chicago, the defense was atrocious that game and we were completely 1 dimensional. Despite that, it was a 10 point game with almost 11 min to go in the game, and the defense did absolutely nothing to stop them.

Howell is having an amazing first season. All QBs - even the great ones - have bad games over the course of a long season. And obviously guys in their first season as starter are likely too. The kid has a great arm, generally makes good decisions, is mobile, and has a great attitude and work ethic.

It brings to mind Joe Theismann's (a guy who should really be a HOF candidate) 1983 season.

I don't want to be unkind - but I think your take is ludicrous.
