Allen is too smart to figure that after 4 years Ron was going to figure this out in 2023 and was going to take this team to 11 or 12 wins and save his job.

A new owner is going to bring in new GM, coach and staff and hopefully better ones than are here now.

Why does Allen want to leave now just as things are turning around?

Doesn't make sense to me.

The one scenario I can see if he knows a rebuild is coming and by the time things get rebuilt, he will be out. Either through signing a new contact, or becoming a cap casualty in a few years. It's hard to know for sure, but he has to see that things are going to change in the next few years. I can only think he doesn't want to be stuck here for the bad while they build it back up, only to not enjoy the rewards of winning.
 
I realize I'm a "blue sky" kind of guy who drinks the Kool-Aid most years but I don't believe this team is that far away. Especially with what I am seeing in Sam.

If I'm a long-suffering vet like Allen, I am looking at this long dark hallway I've been stuck in and seeing a definite positive turn just ahead.
 
If the news regarding Allen is true, I would tell him to start packing.

For years we have talked about his top-tier leadership qualities and how he is a franchise cornerstone.

Leaders don't bail when things look bleak.

I can imagine Allen said something out of frustration. He's just played a couple heartbreaking games in a row. Who'd blame him if in the heat of the moment he blurts out, "I am so done here!" with a towel over his head as Del Rio screams, "What we do works!"

Everyone deserves a moment to vent, feel blue, and rail. How many of us have declared we're done with this team after a loss like this or embarrassments like those against the Giants or Bears?
 
That tweet was weak because it's not clear whether Allen said 'I want out of DC' or Glazer is just interpreting his frustrated comments after the last game.

It's all about to get blown up and players likely view that a little differently than fans do. It would have to make you feel insecure, you're likely saying goodbye to good friends, you yourself may be traded, and a whole new set of coaches likely inbound. It's a much bigger deal personally for players than for fans - so I suspect we will start to hear a lot of noise from players on what's going on.
 
I really think a new GM and coach can have this team at 10-6 or 11-5 in a reasonable time.

We can't afford to keep both Young and Sweat under the cap and need to find a way to get value for them on the way out.

If we franchise Sweat and let Young go in free agency and recoup a #3 comp pick so be it.

I wouldn't trade either player right now for less than the comp pick we would be receiving, that would be just plain stupid.

At the same time, what do we need to add?

On offense:

Pass catching TE to help Howell. The good quarterbacks in this league almost to a man have a playmaking TE. Mahomes, Hurts, Purdy, etc. all have pro bowl caliber tight ends to help make the offense go. Here we have nothing. Jamison Crowder is in essence acting as our TE in the passing game right now.

Offensive line. We don't have ONE foundational player on the OL. Our best lineman, Charles Leno Jr., is 32 years old and has been injured this year.

Once again, I think you take some of the money from the DL and share it on the OL, you sign one or two players in free agency and then go into the 2024 draft and use 2 or 3 picks to bolster depth and the future of the unit, something Ron has consistently failed to do.

On defense:

We may have the outlines of a fairly good defense. A new coach and GM, getting rid of Del Rio and his crazy alignments, could organize this group and add one or two pieces to make it a more consistent unit.

We also have to admit some players were overdrafted like Forbes and should not be out there as starters this early in their careers.
 
All it takes is one crazy GM or coach. And as we know from experience with Russell Wilson or DeShaun Watson there is almost always ONE guy out there that thinks he is one player away from reaching the promised land. Yes, they are wrong 95% of the time but it doesn't stop them.

Belichick used to unload 29/30 year old players like Richard Seymour and Chandler Jones and get high #1 picks for them at the trade deadline.
 
I saw someone is offering two 3rd rounders (can't verify if that's factual). I'd do that deal in a heartbeat. I'd also be fine if they kept Sweat and traded Young (but I'd ask a 2nd and a 4th or 5th for Young).
 
C'mon crazy GM! Papa needs a new left tackle.
 
Miami and San Diego have draft choices and a clear need for help on D.

I wonder if the Dolphins think they are that close in the AFC?

Buffalo and KC have looked mortal the past few weeks.
 
Another move that would make sense, given his absence in this offense.




I think explosive RB needs to be on this teams menu this offseason. I would be looking at RBs in the 4th / 5th round of just about every draft that can be explosive guys.

De'Vone Achane - 3rd round pick
Jaleel McLaughlin - UDFA
Kyren Williams - 5th round pick
Tony Pollard - 4th round pick


All guys that are major contributors taken later in the draft. Weapons are weapons and can be found pretty much anywhere.
 
The Baltimore Ravens are interested in Antonio Gibson. What they are offering is not known. But his name has been out there in the Baltimore media as a guy that could come in and work well with Lamar Jackson.
 
I love Gibson. I actually think he’s the best back on this team (but you have to take the fumbles into account). I think his best football is likely behind him though and he’s taken a lot of pounding over the past several seasons. I could live with trading him for a pick if it’s a decent offer.

God help us if it’s Rivera deciding though. His inclination would be to do what he did last Sunday. Nothing.
 
I'd be kind of bummed to lose Gibson, but I think it makes sense. This team never figured it out with him and now he is so underutilized. I realize part of that is the fumbling and lack of vision, but it's also about the coaches not being able to turn potential into production.
 
I have, for some time, thought that Gibson would not get a second contract here. In fact, I thought that might have been the thinking behind drafting Rodriguez.

If that is the case, then trading him now makes sense. He is averaging 5 touches a game @ just under 6.9 yards per touch. We should be able to make that up somewhere.
 
Gibson is an unusual player and his skill set was not employed consistently by Rivera in a way that got the most out of him.

The team at first tried to make him a workhorse, getting 240 carries and that showed he was not up to taking that kind of beating over 16 games. As a natural wide receiver, he runs fairly straight up and takes the kinds of hits other veteran backs tend to avoid.

The role that I think he fit was the role Joe Washington used to fit for Joe Gibbs. Put him in as a third down back and split him out wide and get a mismatch on a linebacker, or use him on delayed handoffs on third and 10 with the defense pulling 7 guys back into coverage.

They did some of that but at least the run game part never materialized because the Washington offensive line is porous and doesn't run block well.

But I could easily see Gibson go to Baltimore and be on the receiving end of short passes from Lamar Jackson and seeing him run 40 yards for a TD.
