The Name Change Thread

I think most fans intuitively know it’s not going back to ‘Redskins’ but I think this is the team quietly saying ‘slow your roll - that’s not going to happen’.

Snyder said we would never change it, yet we did.

I don't know if we will, and tend to think we won't. But, I won't be sold on it until it's changed to something else.
 
That’s fair. But the reason I think it’s reasonable to view this as throwing cold water on the fire. They didn’t need to say anything but instead they had a team spokesman make a formal statement that nothing has changed. I suspect the NFL asked them to squelch it.
 
I'm cool with them never going back to the old name. With the hysterical people deciding almost everything now days it is pretty unrealistic to expect that at all.

Anything but Commanders is what I am focused on now and until it is finally (hopefully) changed again. I don't have a negative opinion on any of the more popular choices that have been thrown around so just get something done soon before the team starts winning divisions and all of a sudden people aren't trying to get it changed anymore.
 
To me, that's giving info the mob mentality. If a majority thinks the wrong thing it shouldn't mean we give up. It should be an even bigger reason to fight.

People are getting sick of the woke crowd complaining and it's becoming very apparent. Social media, real life... people are starting to tell those people to shut up and not fearing them.

They'll be the Redskins to me regardless of name changing back.
 
My view on this I think is slightly different.

I don't think Harris and Johnson are using the Redskin name to test the waters for a name change. I don't think that's really on the cards at all. Money talks and all that.

I do, however, think we're about to see an ownership group who aren't 'afraid' of our heritage. While we won't be going back to the Redskins (no matter how many thousands of people sign a petition) I do think we'll hear the name more frequently again in relation to the team's history and legacy. I think Harris and co are savvy enough to know that they need to change with the times but also embrace the legacy of the past in a way that's not just the lip-service Snyder used to pay.

It wouldn't surprise me to have a new name that's closer to the team's history. A Warriors or something similar. Or for them to take a name that was popular with the fans, like Redwolves or Hogs.
The Commanders name just stinks to me of a Snyder decision. A misguided judgment about the fact that as a fanbase we'd embrace something that stood for military service. I don't think he ever treated us as a savvy fanbase that could see through his manipulations, especially after he'd spent two decades burning us.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see a uniform change back to something closer to our classic uniforms.

Not surprised but the name change was never really driven by the Native American populace as a large percentage, it was driven by a bunch of self loving upper class people showing how progressive they are while it was nothing but a dog and pony show because they didn't give a shit in reality.
 
There was noise about the name for years but it never amounted to anything until Dan Snyder pissed off Fred Smith.

Due to Dan, Fred made it about money and we all know that money is all that moves the league. It took Dan, what, 48 hours to throw in the towel after Smith threatened to pull the FedEx dollars?
 
Well, I for one am hoping this group makes some good noise and we can get back to our name.

Florio is a guy I try and tune out. He is a political sports commentator. He never played the game at any level and doesn't really have a lot of knowledge about the history of the game, his schtick is using his legal background to consistently bring up social and cultural issues in the game and how they can potentially be litigated.

He's a lawsuit in search of a cause of action.
 
NFL fans don’t boycott the NFL. The folks who were that upset with the name change left a long time ago. There are thousands of alternatives to Bud Light but there’s only 1 NFL team in DC and that’s why a boycott will never happen.
 
I disagree. The stands last year at fed ex said we were mad. People jumping to the ravens and other teams showed it, too.

It could work. It could be the new anti-woke. But, there is definitely smoke here
 
I feel you Ryman. But unfortunately, it's just the reality of the era we live in that 'Redskins' is highly unlikely to return. The way I look at it, this is still the DC NFL franchise no matter what the name. Whatever history the franchise has doesn't change because the 'name' changed. The 'Redskins' of 1983, 1987, or 1991 didn't bear any resemblance to the 'Redskins' of Dan Snyder's tenure. I know the name is a big deal, but it was never the name that tied us all together over years and years of watching this franchise. It was the fact that they were the NFL team in Washington, whether you grew up there or just rooted from afar. The players and coaches deserve rooting for. The whole name thing is entirely political and beyond our control.

I've felt from early on that shunning the team was the worst possible outcome of the name change controversy.

So I'm moving forward with my team no matter what the name is. Just my take on it. Doesn't mean I support what has happened or that I would have chosen it to happen. When I was a kid, my mom often chided me for 'cutting off my nose to spite my face'. I think not supporting the current team because of politically-motivated changes falls into that category. Just my opinion and I get that every fan has earned the right to view things however they view them.
 
IMO the name change did not push fans to the Ravens.

I had neighbors in Bethesda who brought up their kids watching the Ravens specifically because of all of the losing under Snyder, the foolish personnel moves and then the sequential scandals that engulfed the franchise.

People just wanted to watch football and share the game with their kids. And kids? They like winners.

While Washington was down in the standings as 'Redskins' the Ravens were winning 2 Super Bowls.

Start winning football games, show a positive face to the community and change the name to Red Hawks or some other mascot/logo which is marketable to younger people and you will get a stronger base back in the area.
 
I can't take that 'NAGA' group seriously. Go to their site and read up on their 'Board of Directors'. I think this is a political group, not an advocacy group, and not a very intelligent or savvy one (and that’s being kind). Honestly, I find it embarrassing they are the face of the ‘name change’ push right now.
