2023 - OTA/Camp thread

Apke still being on the roster is a head-scratcher for me. I thought he should have been cut 2 years ago.
 
On the Bienemy controversy.

I remember a few years ago, players (I think it was offensive linemen, but it might have been defensive linemen) were grumbling a lot because the new coaching staff was teaching new techniques and wanting players to approach a play a different way. The coach responded simply, "Have you been winning?"

Any player who's griping because practice is not "comfortable" enough for them needs to get their head around the fact that they have no reason on offense to feel comfortable. The offense has, by and large, stunk for five years. and they need to practice harder. They need to stop loafing in practice. They need to start faster and be more accurate, precise, and consistent. Like Brian Mitchell said if they are practicing only once a day and not even in pads... then they are not practicing too hard. I really think that it's not that things have been too hard recently, but that some players have been allowed to take it too easy.

I don't attend many practices, but I have a very clear memory of how surprised I was by how much standing around I saw and how little "action" I saw in that two hour window. These guys are a professional athletes, I should leave a practice awed and sure that I couldn't do what they just went through not think, "Hey, this was easier than my gym routine."
 
Makes you wonder who was griping? I’ll bet we’d be surprised and that it includes some supposed player ‘leaders’ because only someone feeling entitled would have the balls to go to the HC to complain about the new OC. I have someone in mind.

and now they're trying Larsen and Stromberg at Guard.


Why is it that a bunch of us on a message board can see that the position isn't set, but no action is taken? Coming into this season we'd almost all agree that the biggest needs were O-line, TE, and LB.

Now we've signed a cast off TE, we're trying other guys at Guard, and Jamin Davis is staring down the barrel of a suspension.

I really don't like this front office's approach at times. Some moves are great, others are just like "duh, what did you think would happen"
 
I agree with your overall point - I just wanted to mention that per Rivera's presser today, they are having those guys play at guard just so that they can have more 'position flex', not because they are looking for a starter. Doesn't really address your point though.

I guess one thing I'll give them - every season we are really concerned about the OL, but for the most part, they do okay. That's certainly not the bar you want to shoot for, but they never seem to be as bad as we predict they will be. Then again, how much of that was Matsko magic? And of course, we let him go.

Did you guys know that we don't even have an Offensive Line coach? The only line coach listed on the team site is Travelle Wharton who is the 'Assistant Offensive Line Coach'. I guess that means that Bienemy himself is managing those duties, although why you would not someone great in there 100% dedicated to OL is beyond me?
 
Stromberg, a natural center, hasn't come within sniffing distance of competing with Gates for the starting center job despite being a fairly high pick.

In this case I think it's a case of the coaching staff looking at the player they drafted and wondering if they can find a place for him elsewhere on the OL to legitimize their pick.
 
Possible. They may be playing word games because Rivera doesn't want to have questions about why they've already moved a 3rd round pick to another position because he can't unseat a marginal veteran.
 
the other strange case is Cosmi.

many NFL scouts/personnel guys thought Cosmi would be an NFL guard. But Washington was stubborn in putting him at RT and leaving him there for 2 years despite mixed results.

now in Year 3 of his rookie contract they are finally moving him to a position many outside the organization thought should have been Stop #1.

this kind of slow/stall in evaluating players and getting them situated leaves only 1 season to really evaluate Cosmi before the team has to make a decision on a second contract for the player.
 
And right on cue...

 
I suspect Cosmi was put at tackle in part because they had no one else other than Lucas who they clearly don't see as a long term starter. He was the only guy who could do it. Mind you, him being the only guy who could do it not only for one season, but over several paints the FO in a really bad light.

Let's face it - this team needs to make a move or two before the season opener. Whether it is a mid-level trade for a guy with a contract who has been beaten out by a top selection rookie or a serviceable vet who needs a change of scenery, etc.
 
Ugh. And apparently relying on Cosmi at any line position may be chasing fool's gold. Hope I'm overreacting.
 
OL injuries have been a staple around here for years, going back to Chase Rouillier, Brandon Scherff, etc.

Good players, marginal players, rookies, etc. It doesn't seem to matter they all seem to get nicked and go on IR for long stretches.
 
So, our Asst OL coach who per Keim is *really* the OL coach because Ron 'didn't have permission to fill Matsko's position' (I'm sorry but that sounds like total bullshit to me) is out for the forseeable future just having had back surgery. I guess whoever was pretending to be the Asst OL coach while Wharton was pretending to be the OL coach will need to step up.

Weakest unit on the team and fewest coaching resources of any of them.

This is the kind of head-scratching bullshit that drives me crazy about Rivera.
