Random Commanders Thoughts

Young is coming back to practice this week
 
I am glad for him. No earthly idea of what to expect from him. If somehow he can get back to his early form, good lord we would have a DL that would be fearsome.
 
Sweat is the guy you have to double right now. He's having quite the year. So, if anything, he just needs to perform against single blocking. Should be alright.... hopefully
 
I know a lot of us had Roquan fantasies. Guess we can put those to bed now :)

Yep.
Disappointed that this team has no vision for the future. They should be active at the deadline(dealing Payne if they're not paying him) in search of draft picks.

I suppose it has to be mentioned, though, that he is widely regarded and accepted as a Kyle Smith find. Of course, just as we talk about with Turner on O, got to give some credit to JDR here too. Sometimes a player just gets the scheme, and Curl seems to really "get" the JDR scheme. Good find, good fit; it's exactly what you need from your GM and coordinators.

I wasn't giving Rivera credit, i meant ours as in one of our all time wins as an organization as a whole.

Yeah, I figured that; Curl is awesome and that was great to see. It is just sad that it seems we let people walk and replaced them with what I at least for now view as inferior people. It seems like Rivera is either not good at judging merit or has no interest in letting merit win out. Either way, it is sad to watch that unfold.
 
How long is Holcomb supposed to be out? Was scary seeing Bostic and David Mayo in coverage.

It really felt like they were on a tight budget. I wonder how cash poor Snyder/The Commanders are? After acquiring Wentz they more or less folded up their tent and said, "We are done!" despite promising to be aggressive during the offseason.

The other thing we have to keep in mind, it takes two to tango, though I do agree with you on some level as we seem to be sitting on our hands quite a bit.

I'm as critical as anyone letting guys walk, but we have NO idea how these conversations went behind closed doors. I think we have to keep in mind that guys like Ioannidis may have gone to the team and requested a release. Settle... may have declined any contract offers made, even if in line with what he got in Buffalo (and let's not deny Buffalo being a much better destination in regards to winning). We've signed guys from the last front office in McLaurin and Allen. This place isn't the most exciting to be. Losing culture, problematic ownership, inferior facilities (practice and game day).. now we've got former players speaking out about not wanting to be honored as an all time great... i don't think it's a coincidence if players are deciding they dont want to be / stay here.
 
I hear you, but it's not just about who walked but who we brought in. We didn't seem to be players in any negotiations this offseason. We were either priced out (too cheap,) an unwanted destination, or not trying. It just seems weird that we wooed so few free agents and ignored areas that we know were huge weaknesses. For example, throughout 2021 Rivera publicly bemoaned our terrible linebacker play. It seems like we didn't talk to any tier one or tier two free agent linebackers. Ultimately, we decided to address our linebacker weakness by not addressing it and then deciding that we would play small ball.

I mean does anyone really think that there weren't players who were upgrades to John Bostic and David Mayo?

not one argument from me, i mentioned it in another thread (or this one...?).. Joe Schobert is a vet guy that's had over 100 tackles each of the last 5 seasons... he was a cap casualty during final cut downs and ended up finding his way to the Titans practice squad where he's been up and down a couple times this season. That guy at a minimum to compete as a depth guy on the active roster seems like a no brainer to me.

It seriously does make me wonder if player flat out refuse to come here....

I lean toward what you're thinking... that Rivera and co seem to always be content with their roster make up the way they 'planned it' and refuse to adjust until well after it's blown up in their faces. I will give them credit that the LBs do appear to be playing much better as this season goes on, and the D-line has finally started executing what they have always expected. William Jackson is the thing thats blown in up in their faces... it just took about 15 more games than it should have... and the anger is more about the fact that they kept forcing a round peg into a hole shaped like a questionmark.

I’ve been saying this for a while. Snyder is house poor. It is the only thing that explains the obvious holes that have been ignored.

this is another part of it.

I believe its been talked about, but when you sign a player to a contract, a check for their Signing Bonus (because it's fully guaranteed) goes into escrow so that in the event the team were to go into foreclosure (likely never happen, but still) the money is there to pay the player.
 
I really have no confidence that they know what they are doing...lol
