The Way Too Early 2022 Draft Thread

Yeah, we have played 2 games and still have 15 to go. Yeah, we have no clue who will be available in Free Agency before the draft gets here. Yeah, we don't know a lot of things.

But interwebz forums are for crazy speculation! So let's speculate some, aye?

Based on what you have seen through 2 games, what positions should WFT be targeting in the 2022 Draft?

You have 3 selections in the pole. Then, if you are so inclined, list your 3 votes in the comments below in order of priority.

My priorities right now are:

1. Linebacker
2. Offensive Guard/Center
3. Safety

If I'm being honest, I wanted to cast more than one vote for Linebacker. I think we need to address the interior O-line soon as it is nearly a certainty that Scherff is going to be gone next year and LG has been a revolving door for years. I also went with Safety (just edging out CB) because I'm not sure Collins isn't going to be a liability this year and we will want an upgrade next year.

I think the real question is where do you think we'll be drafting first.

That determines a whole helluva lot when it comes to addressing need

Walterfootball mock has them taking this kid from Nevada in the 2nd. Wouldn’t be mad at them if it was with their 1st either.

I just chose QB, OT, and LB in that order. Looks like that is the consensus around here. Carson Strong would be a good choice. And Matt Corral. Desmond Ridder. Malik Willis. Will Levis. Darkhorse - Brennan Armstrong.

2022 QB class > 2021 QB class.

Ridder was a guy I thought would be a sneaky good 4th round sleeper in this last draft til he announced he was returning to school.

IMHO the answer to the poll is QB / OL / OL / OL / OL, then everything else. That's not to say I want our first 5 picks to shake out that way, but Leno is on a short term deal, Scherff likely gone, Roullier getting older, and the Flowers / Schweitzer combination isn't a spring chicken either. Cosmi is the only young, developing guy, so we need to inject that position group with young talent. Heinicke COULD change the notion of QB EARLY, but I still think QB needs to be a focus EVERY year, even if you have your guy.

Those guys both remind me of RG3, too likely to get hurt when scrambling. I’d rather have a pocket passer with mobility, guys like Kenny Picket or Carson Strong.

Then again - if we’ve learned anything on recent years it’s that few are very good at predicting the college QB ‘hits’ from the ‘misses’. That includes draft experts, mediots, and fans.

9) Washington Football Team: Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss

If there’s any team that needs to do its homework on the 2022 quarterback class, it’s Washington. The Football Team exited the 2021 offseason with Ryan Fitzpatrick and Taylor Heinicke at quarterback. The latter has essentially started the entire season, with uninspiring consistency. Washington has been in QB purgatory longer than the Panthers have existed. It’s time to change that and stop living on the bridge.


Granted, it may be difficult to change that in 2022. But one quarterback who seems like the best bet is Matt Corral. Corral has the arm talent that Heinicke lacks, and he brings the same athletic ability needed to create off-script. Moreover, Corral is a steely competitor, and he’s become a more efficient passer this year. There’s enough upside here to take the risk. And of all teams, Washington needs to take it.

40) Washington Football Team: Trent McDuffie, CB, Washington

The Washington Football Team’s defense — heralded as a potentially elite unit heading into the season — has been one of the league’s worst through mid-November. Trent McDuffie brings athleticism and smarts to the CB room. I have him as a top-20 prospect overall.

9. Washington Football Team | Wake Forest QB Sam Hartman

None of this year’s quarterback prospects are terribly inspiring, which is why a stellar redshirt sophomore like Hartman could easily rise to the top of the group.

Don’t know a thing about that QB but I like these first few picks here a lot. We’re gonna have to hit OL with Scherff all but gone.

Do we though? Our O-line has been one of our best units on the team and that's including the injuries.. Re-sign Leno to be LT, Comsi is RT. Rouiller will be back next year.. OG is a lot easier to address than OT or C.

The other thing is that this is a Mock, so if we go vet route in Free Agency / Trade prior to the draft that changes things.

This draft has us taking Hartman, which on the surface may not be bad, but i question the fact that he's the first QB off the board. I don't know that he's on that level.... yet. He may ultimately be the pick there, but I think Pickett and Willis find themselves drafted before Hartman is taken. Whether that means they go top 8 and we take Hartman at 9, or we take 1 of those 2 guys at 9 (or whenever we pick, this is all based on 'current' draft position) is yet to be seen. Corral may be the first QB off the board also... and Hartman may find himself at 4. There is no clear cut order the QBs are ranked this year. It may ultimately come down to how long the teams play into bowl season with 'recency effect' winning out. Whoever plays late finds themselves getting the most attention.

Fair point, TBH I want us drafting O-line every year, even if we're 'set' at that line. Too many factors and if there is anywhere that depth is a necessity, it's there.

Unless Curtis Samuels makes a miraculous recovery, we need to draft a complementary WR. That may be one of our biggest needs.

WR is like EDGE. Can never have too many weapons. Even if Samuel gets back to 100%

Especially given the high miss factor on them. I feel like you should draft a QB and a WR in every draft because it's very difficult to hit on a true star based on college performance.
