Desperate for Oline help and we Draft... a Linebacker.

We needed linebackers as well. Not a long list of impact players at the position right now by my count.

The issue to me is more WHO we took. After the top 2-3 were off the board I don’t know there was another LB with this high a rating.

There’s always a chance a guy who has a one year meteoric rise in college can be fool’s gold as much as core addition for the future.

I think back to Devin Thomas. He had the measurables and that one killer campaign in school.

Reportedly, the WFT had Jamin Davis as THE best defensive player in this draft. Setting aside our own individual expertise, if that was the case, they just had a tremendous 1st round. I applaud them for showing tremendous patience and letting the draft come to them. None of us knows tonight which picks were outstanding ones and which weren't - we're just guessing.

Bottom line, we just added a very talented player at a real position of need for our defense. The draft isn't over btw - and there are some great OL still available.

Our LB corps was hot garbage and it showed. We've got a good DL but the backers are all slow to react.

I know you have been paying attention to this a lot more than I have. As you stated, this was a position of need and if he was truly their top rated player, than they absolutely have to pick him. Also, as I learned from the blind pig podcast (free plug), there are a lot of really good lineman in this draft. We've said that before and they come out of the drafts without taking one or waiting until way late to take a guy that doesn't pan out. So time will tell if they take a lineman in this deep draft. I'm expecting they draft at least 1 lineman tomorrow, or maybe I'm just hopeful they do.

The Tampa game to me last year was a sign that the defense is not quite at a championship level, despite what some want to believe. Fournette hurt us all night and Cameron Brate at Tight End had his way as well. I think that game was a bit of an eye opener and signified the importance of adding a 'backer to potentially complete the defensive unit.

At the end of the day, LB was a slightly bigger need than Tackle. Thankfully, with the depth at Tackle in the draft, it affords you the opportunity to wait it out a bit.

I also wouldn't completely discount the fact that maybe this is a bit of an endorsement for Shadiqq Charles and where the staff envisions him eventually with another year of development behind Lucas.

To point out one more thing...

Obviously o-line is the other need you consider at 19. The pick at that point based on availability would have likely been Christian Darrisaw. However, it is not uncommon when it comes to him to hear words/phrases like "lacks mean streak", "struggles being physical", and "complacent." I am not knocking him as a prospect; however, I never really did see those types of descriptors on a guy as being a Rivera type player. Not too sure it matches the culture that is trying to be established team-wide.

At the end of the day, you can't really be too down on Davis, especially given the opportunity he will hopefully be afforded to make plays behind the strongest unit on our team, the defensive line. Should be fun to watch.

There were still very good OLinemen available, Linebacker is decent on the team but could use an upgrade, however our Oline is really really bad, at this point I am wondering if Rivera knows what he is doing.

You should become a GM in the NFL then and show these bums how it is really done. You are just wasting your talent on a message board playing hindsight GM!

I was as 'let down' as anyone when we passed on Darrisaw but the Davis pick is still a great pick... our LB room was probably our biggest liability coming into this draft... LT being on the list but it's 1a and 1b

I agree ST, disappointed we let Darrisaw pass by, I'm wondering if were going to try and trade up in the 2nd now, not a ton of tackle prospects left that could make an immediate impact.

Watch Walker Little and Spencer Brown

Rivera actually said Davis was the highest rated defensive player on the board when they drafted at #19.

Just a clarification Rivera was talking about where we stood at the draft at the time of the selection.

I am sure if Parsons was there at #19 he would have been the pick.

Thanks - that’s a good point

That’s a good distinction to make. It doesn’t change my opinion that this was a good pick. But it is good to know the complete context.

I was wrong in Round 1 thinking the team would move up.

My thought now is the team will take Moehrig at FS at #51 if available and then take OL with both of the #3 picks (?).

There are two or three quarterback prospects still on the board that translate to the second and third round.

I wonder if Rivera has written that off until our #1 pick in 2022?

Did anyone see Aaron Rodgers stoking the fires by indicating through 'sources' that perhaps he would not be returning to the NFL in 2021? I knew he wasn't through with Guntekunst and LaFleur for drafting a quarterback in Round 1 in 2020 and showing him little respect after going to the NFC title game :2thumbsup:

Rodgers has a big ego and Green Bay if they were going to plan on replacing him should have moved up to a top 5 position and then traded #12.

He is going to make life hell for the organization over the next 12 months.

I had us taking Moehrig in Round 1, I think it's doubtful he'd be there that late in the 2nd

Yep. Even though he’s due a bunch of guaranteed money in 2021, I wouldn’t put it past him to sit out. When he says he’s done with the Packers, I believe him. They should’ve gotten whatever they could for him and moved on. I hope we stay as far away from him as humanly possible. We don’t need an egomaniac 38 year old and I don’t care how good people think he is on the field.

Moehrig won't last to #51 and even if he does there is better value at Safety later in this draft, IMHO.

Look for the team to got QB or OT at #51 now that they have upgraded the LB position.

I wouldn’t rule out TE there either
