Random Commanders Thoughts

Jon Allen isn't going anywhere. Going into the last year of his deal and according to some, Rivera and Del Rio love what he brings to the team.

The Redskins just do not have the ammo to get Watson and IMO, I do not believe Watson is going anywhere.

The team should put it's focus on Matt Stafford.

I don't think we will make serious offers for any of the top tier guys, because it will cripple our ability to keep building the roster. There's also the factor that, other than Rivera and a good defense, DC is not exactly a prime NFL location NFL players are climbing over one another to get to. How do you compete with sunny California, Arizona, Florida, or even Texas? I just don't see us winning those kinds of sweepstakes, and we don't possess high 1st round picks which means we will be giving up young talent in addition to picks. I really think it's a suckers move to try and fix the QB with some gigantic trade. We are finally seeing success exactly because we've resisted those kind of moves for multiple years.

I think it's more likely that we go after and get a 2nd tier guy with promise. A Darnold, Carr, Garrapalo, or Mariota-type. Also possible we stay with the QBs we have. And that wouldn't be nearly as terrible as many believe.

Love the idea of getting Sam Darnold here and still having draft resources to keep building at Oline and the skill positions.

He still has upside and Adam Gase did him no favors in NY.

Going with what we have to me means finishing 7-9 again in a 2021 season where Washington is playing a first place schedule.

If we draft a young quarterback in Round 1 or 2 and have Kyle Allen for a bridge season then that's fine.

But simply bringing Allen and Heinicke back and then concentrating on free safety and another WR in the draft to me is not the way to go.

#2 wide receivers to put next to Terry McLaurin can be had in free agency, no reason to spend a #1 or #2 pick on one.

Ditto with linebacker. I think the team can go out into free agency and acquire a starting caliber linebacker to replace Bostic/KPL and help stabilize us against the run.

If we are able to take a quarterback that drops in the draft and an OT with the first two picks that would be the ideal scenario.

I think they'll cut Alex Smith without question. Kyle Allen will get a shot. Heinicke may have done enough to be there for camp but unless he shows he's the 2nd coming there, PS is likely the best he can hope for. So that means they're going to add someone. I don't get the argument that unless we add a marquee QB we'll go 7-9 again. First of all, the NFC East is in total turmoil. Second of all, we all know 'strength of schedule' and record predictions usually don't work out very well. Teams fortunes change quickly in the NFL. And NOT going after a marquee QB is going to allow us to potentially add some serious young talent, in the draft as well as free agency. I don't know how one looks at that and says we'll be no better in 2021. Hell - if we'd made competent coaching decisions in couple games and kept Haskins off the field, we might have won 10 games last season.

we were a few plays away from being 10-6 also. So, I am perfectly OK with making a couple of changes and keeping what we have.

The team was also a few plays away from being 4-12 and that last game against Philly we were very lucky that they benched Hurts because while he was limited as a passer he ran the ball whenever he wanted against us and we never managed to check him.

What I am thinking here is the NFC East is not going to be as bad in 2021 as it was this year.

Most likely Prescott will be back in Dallas and the team won 6 games last year without him. So, adding a top 10-15 quarterback back to the roster puts them ahead of where they were last year.

The Giants and the Eagles are more of a question mark. The Giants were in the running with us before Jones got hurt and the team had to depend upon Colt McCoy (surprise!).

They beat us twice last year, albeit Ron helped give them one game with the boneheaded 2 point attempt, and have an improving defense with some top picks.

But I am agreed there is more than enough room in the NFC East for Washington to take the division over IF we are able to elevate what we get at the quarterback position.

McLaurin had 1,000 yards, McKissic had 80 catches and Gibson adjusted well to being a full-time rusher.

Imagine what these younger players can do with a better quarterback.

I like what Heinicke did against the Bucs but let's be realistic. The Bucs had very little if any tape on Taylor and no one really knew what he was going to do, what his tendencies are and how to break him down.

The NFL will figure him out and he will have to adjust his game in turn, and I just don't know that he has a second act to play there that lends itself to being a 16 game starter.

I think he is an NFL player and a more effective backup than Colt McCoy or some of the other deadwood passers that are making a living riding the pine in the league like Robert Griffin did in Baltimore the past few years.

But with elevated play at the qb position I think Washington is head and shoulders above the Giants and Eagles and most probably the Cowboys even with Dak back in the mix.

At this stage, I don't think we can count on Alex Smith for much more. The fact he injured the leg that has had 17 surgeries after starting only 5 games and remained compromised for that last month of the season points to that.

Kyle Allen is another quality backup player. I think the backup battle is Allen vs. Heinicke.

But if we want to be 10-6 or 11-5 next year against that schedule we need a quarterback that can battle the Wilsons and Mahomes of the world.

Bottom line - pick a random NFL team and I guarantee you there were 4-5 games that could’ve gone either way based on a decision here, a penalty there, a special teams play, or on the outcome of a turnover. That’s true for almost every team.

Good teams find ways to have the ball bounce their way more often than not. That’s what the 2020 WFT did.

Im still mad about that Giants game though. Doh Rivera.

Yep. If Gibson doesn't get hurt, if Smith's leg doesn't lock up...we could have won 10 games.

We all know we were close in those games. Hell, we should have won at least one that Haskins started in.

been a long time since we've seen ourselves in 13 of the 16 games though. We don't often find ourselves ascending while also having resources and youth

I don’t disagree. I also think a ‘theoretically’ tougher schedule next season, along with an expectation that it’s likely the other NFC East teams bounce back means we’d better get better if we expect to break recent trends and win the East for several years running.

very fair, and for a change we're in position to do so. We finally have a bat bigger than most of the other guys swinging, and we're doing it with a young, up and coming core to the roster. To Mike's point, we were competitive, and i would also be content without over-spending or reacting out of desperation. I do believe we need to act in urgency though. Two different things.

Last year we took big swings at Cooper and Hooper, and we missed. We did not react and sign 'the next' guy out of sheer panic. I hope we have that same approach this offseason. We swing at Stafford and missed. I don't want to throw big picks or money because of some panic. If we get 'our' guy and roll, so be it... If we come back with Allen and Heinicke while other teams OVERPAY for the likes of Trubisky and Winston.. I'm good with that too... not my preference, but I'm good with it.

I've said this before, if we had had Kyle Allen or Heinicke under center for all 16 games, we win 10 games or more in 2020. So I'm not in the 'we have to bring a new QB in to win more games' camp. Even going with what we have, assuming they don't spend half the season trying to trot a gimpy Alex Smith out there again, will be 'an upgrade at QB'.

IMO, Heinicke ran the offense better than Kyle Allen did.
Seemed more poised in the pocket than Allen and seemed to know where to go with the ball better.

Anybody else feel that way or is that just me?

I agree with that. It was a limited sample in only 5 quarters of play. But he looked more poised and was able to escape well. He also seemed to take more shots than the Allen. Maybe he didn’t and I was used to captain check down Smith. But Henicke looked unafraid to take a chance and that was refreshing to see.

I gotta be honest. Heinicke, both at the end of the season finale and in the playoff game, played some of the best ball I've seen from any Redskins QBs. Is he better than Kyle Allen? He was in those 2 games. Which one, if either, is good enough to be a long-term starter, that remains to be seen.

This is why I don't want to overspend on a QB when we might have someone on the roster who can do it.

I like the idea of Carr or Darnold because they will be cheaper on the trade. But, I really have this guy feeling that Taylor could have a huge season for us.

That Tampa game he was ducking tackles, moving in the pocket, scrambling, and had good accuracy. We need that considering our OL is most likely not getting any better in the draft

Hold your hat - the Raiders are evidently willing to listen to Carr offers that include multiple high picks, reportedly two #1's.

For that price Gruden can keep him.

The trade route seemed the best one to go until the market got off to the craziest start in recent memory with 'fantasy' level trade requests.

I remember when the Lakers traded 5 #1 picks and a player for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Of course in the NBA draft choices outside of the top 5 don't mean as much as they do in the NFL, either in the past or now.

The smartest route given what we know now about the 'market' in 2021 is to stay away from trades and use the #19 pick to select a passer.

Or package the #19 and next year's pick to move up into a higher position to draft a qb in a draft that promises to be much, much deeper than 2020 or 2019.

Ironically, 2019 beyond that #1 pick of Murray was perhaps the worst year to be looking for a quarterback in the draft and guess who was out there with chin leading the way selecting Haskins :argue:

I dont have the paid ESPN subscription so I can't really compare but 5th seems fair... could argue it could be higher but i'll take 5
