and by anchor I mean what drags us down and holds us back.

the backs look ok when they arent getting hit the second they get the ball, Haskins actually looks decent when he isnt getting someone in his face in 1.5 seconds. The defence looks solid but its a good thing we have great depth on dline because they will be on the field a lot. The Oline just looks bad to me, no push on the run game, and they cant get out of their own way in the pass pro. I cant even watch moses. or christian, it makes my head hurt

I didn't get to watch the whole game as it wasn't on in my area. So it was Red Zone only for me. But I swear every time they showed when the Team had the ball, the line was getting blown up. Whether it was a run or a pass. It was definitely concerning to watch.

Were the cards blitzing like crazy or does the wtf o-line just suck?

We had zero push on the line yesterday, no run game to speak of for the most part, don't know if by design or not but the o line was abysmal almost the entire game.

I disagree... The run game actually looked much better yesterday than it did week 1. Albeit it playing from behind, but we were getting decent runs before the score was totally lopsided.

The problem we had is we were down early again... There were a number of good runs in the intermediate 6 - 10 yard range... no HUGE gashers, but enough that the team averages over 5YPC.. That is in improvement. It's not there yet, but thats not 'no run game' either.

Not at all. Our O line is so horrible they didn't have to call a lot of blitzes. They crumbled so instantly so often it looked like we were blitzing ourselves, it was terrible.

When you're down 14-0 in the first quarter, the defense doesn't have to respect the run. The O-line absolutely is shaky... and a lopsided score just makes it worse.

I'm no expert on these matters, but to the my eye the pocket just consistently contracted around Haskins really fast. I said it in chat last night, it's startling to watch the GreenBay and Washington games back to back.
Literally 20 mins before watching Haskins get a serious case of claustrophobia, I was watching Rodgers having a lovely time standing behind his O-Line as they shuffled the D out to either side of him.

Is there somewhere that tracks the time it takes a pocket to collapse? Because I'd love to see those stats!

It really looked to me like Scott had a gameplan he wanted to execute coming out of the box, but the fast collapse of the OLine wasn't letting it happen. After the half they seemed to adjust to a more uptempo offense, getting the ball out faster, which seemed to open up things a bit. By that time we were in the hole though, and our defense had spent too much time on the field.

I honestly like Haskins, I think he does a good job protecting the ball and doesn't make rash and stupid mistakes. But he's having to hurry his process so quickly to get the ball out before the pocket collapses that his accuracy is suffering. They showed numerous replays yesterday of him having to get rid of the ball before being properly set. The fumble early in the game was from him being blindsided mid-throw, and didn't he get his arm hit on the two point conversion overthrow later too?
I REALLY want to see what he can do given a decent O-Line that gives him time.

I really thought we saw Gibson settle in a lot more this week too, but a good amount of those yards came off broken plays where he was bouncing around off the line like a pinball and making something out of nothing. I Love the way he always seems to fall forward too, getting that extra couple of yards.

The other thing I thought yesterday, was that there were a couple of times the young receivers made catches short of the first down line on crucial third downs. I wondered if, because they're inexperienced, that they weren't quite as field aware as a Vet might be. I think Sims had a catch on a third down were he was about a half yard shy of the line and was brought down before he could turn it up field.

Honestly, apart from the O-Line (which is a shambles) much of what is happening feels very much like growing pains.

But yeah... I do think that Line is going to be the anchor that drags along the seabed while we're trying to make progress moving forward. I think certainly it'll limit our ceiling as an offence.

This line has the same issue that it has had the last few years, regardless the O: It doesn't know how to handle stunts. You figure that's a pretty basic thing to teach, not rocket science... or are they just not that smart... ?

I again can't stress the lack of offseason. Offensive line is not 'easy.' It's not see guy, block guy. These guys are again, behind the 8 ball having to learn a new language, having to be able to change protection assignments, and having to gel with eachother without live game action to make it happen. Its the same issues we're seeing with Haskins, Apke, Collins (blown coverage vs Hopkins on first TD), It's a weak unit, all 5 current players have room for upgrade (assuming Scherff is out for an extended period of time) so I hope I'm not coming across like were 'ok' at that unit... I just don't think we're as far away as others. We have to leave some room for these guys to get the system down, so they're playing the game as a matter of instincts instead of thinking.

FWIW, this is Grant Paulsen, a local radio guy who was on the beat for a long time

Not sure where he gets his data or what the specifics are, but it's still a window into our struggles in pass pro.

Grant is having a hissy fit over two tenths of a second... ? Does he realize he's trying to defend Haskins here, not Cousins?

I'm not listening, but I know him and Danny both have / had a tendency to go hard in the paint in support of Cousins. I personally think it's because they were so happy to have him as a weekly guest, that when he left / got criticized, it effected their jobs.

.2 seconds is borderline immeasurable, which is one reason I don't put a ton of stock in 1 WR that runs a 4.3 40, and another that runs a 4.5.

The bigger problem is that the 2.32 seconds Haskins has on average, is not a clean pocket... he may have time to throw but there is an O-lineman in his lap, an edge rusher behind him causing him to need to move, which effects his ability to set his feet and have a consistent base to throw from.

That sucks. The only guy with talent on the line and he’s out again.

Dude is getting many injuries the older he gets too. Modest contract if the wtf’s decide to keep him past 2020.

If that unit doesn’t pull their head out of their ass they’re gonna get Haskins, Allen & Smith hurt.

.2 seconds in football terms is massive and can be the difference a play goes all the way gets stopped in the backfield.

watching our OLine , they do not get push, they opften get pushed backward, they are not quick off the ball and lack punch. moses looks like he uis scared and hesitates and christian is just not an NFL calibre LT right now, maybe he will improve but he has been terrible thus far.

scherrf is overrated, and he wants massive money to be a just about pro bowler, no thank you. for most teams right guard is the last position you fill.

we need upgrades all around , but we should focus on LT C and RT, and fill in guards with free agents. thats how you build an Oline. right now if we have a piss poor year it will be because haskins is getting enough time and the backs are having to beat guys before even getting to the LOS. Gibson played decently but his best plays come in space, he rarely gets that

Talent means zero if you're not on the field - Scherff is in that category and has been too many times

Especially if he wants Tackle money. I have beat the drum to sign Scherff but I'm seriously softening on that stance quickly. It's just not worth it to pay him like an elite guard. We did that with Jordan Reed, we did it with Desean Jackson. I like Scherff, but these are the moves that separate the top coaches.
