No, we are not. Dismissing what we are saying is very passive aggressive. He has a job in our front office, he is having a movie made about him...for what? One game? Half a season? The stats show he wasn't that good.

I've never been more wrong? John, they scored 10 points the entire game. All the points were in the first quarter.

Meanwhile....Doug throws a ball that Ricky Sanders takes 80 yards for a TD. Clark makes a DIVING catch for a TD, Timmy Smith runs for 58 yards and a TD, Sanders has a 50 yard completion for a TD, and Smith breaks another 43 yard run and then an 8 yard TD pass,

Ricky set Super Bowl records for most receiving yards (193), most total yards (235), most touchdowns in one quarter (2), most receiving yards in one quarter (168), and longest touchdown reception (80 yards, tie)

Timmy Smith set a Super Bowl rushing record in his first career start, gaining 204 yards and scoring 2 touchdowns

That team was stacked, and that game was easily won. Elway was sacked 5 times and threw 3 picks.

Ricky is the quarter and game MVP. Anyone behind those hogs could have thrown balls that go for 80 and 58 for TDs as well as a scrub RB who still holds the rushing record.
 
Or you could say that Denver was dominating the game prior to Williams taking over and scoring more points in a single quarter than any QB in Super Bowl history - because that's a fact. You don't think that quarter had an impact on the rest of the game, lol... ? Elway got sacked 5 times because they literally had no choice after that but to air it out to try and get back in the game. You've gone from the 'Williams was just a guy' argument (which if you want to believe, I won't beat on your for) to arguing Williams Super Bowl performance was a yawner and they would have won any way. Good luck with that.

I disagree with you and there's been nothing passive or aggressive about my posts. It's a discussion thread. You don't have to agree or like it.

I didnt say he was a yawner. I said he was mediocre. Diving catches, huge YACs, and a RB who set a record is why we won that game. He just got the ball to the playmakers when it mattered most. He didn't drop game winning dimes or have to have huge clutch moments.

Williams is rightfully respected for obvious reasons. He almost single-handedly gave Tampa Bay their first significant success as a franchise, he was one of a handful of early African American QBs (along with Warren Moon) who showed you could win with them under center, and that they could be every bit the QB and leader as their white counterparts, and he had 'the game'. And Mike - I don't think you've ever been more wrong about anything than when you imply that Denver wasn't going to win that game regardless of who the QB was. The Redskins were hapless before Williams went on his 2nd quarter tear. Denver scored quickly on a long TD pass and forced a 3 and out. They drove it down to the 6 yard line before the Redskins stopped them and had to settle for a field goal. They forced another Redskins punt. And they would have scored a 3rd time in the first quarter as they were deep in Redskins territory before a great 18 yard sack by Alvin Walton.

Then Williams put up 35 points on them in that miraculous 2nd quarter. Of course he didn't do it alone. But that quarter effectively ended the game. Absolutely the greatest quarter of QB play ever imho. We have no idea what transpires if he doesn't crush the Broncos spirit in that 2nd quarter.

Not arguing AGAINST him, but realizing who he was is not a stretch. I keep reading these responses and they come across like some sort of defense of Williams... this whole thing is not an attack, he's ALWAYS going to have a special place in my heart because of what he did. I brag about that quarter, and i have a level of pride knowing that WE had the first African American QB that won a Super Bowl and I'm happy he won MVP. All of that aside, I can still look at him and understand that he stepped up and did what he did on the biggest stage, and that elevates the opinions beyond what I PERSONALLY feel is accurate. His biggest notch in his bedpost is the 2nd quarter of the SB playing for a coaching staff that won 3 Super Bowls in less than 10 years. That takes him to another level for sure, but the rest of the resume is meh at best.
 
No one in this thread has said or even implied Williams was a great QB Derek - that was the straw man I referred to. Acknowledging that is a lot different than giving the man no credit for any of his accomplishments, even that amazing 2nd quarter of Super Bowl XXII.

I'm pretty sure Williams is at peace with who he was and who he is, so we can all take comfort in that.

Maybe I read it wrong then... but what I saw was a back and forth about Williams and it read a lot like he wasn't getting enough credit. I was just clarifying that Mikes opinions are shared. I don't doubt that Williams is comfortable with his position, in fact he's in a hell of an enviable one. We all wish we could have the success he did.. i was speaking in a vacuum regarding him as a player trying to be objective.
 
"he was a damn good QB" is what Brian said. In my opinion he wasn't. This is where it all came from. I remember him opening up sports stores in the local area and within a few years they were all closed and he was gone.

OK season..amazing game. Just not the legend that a Riggo/Sonny/Monk/Baugh is IMO.
 
Wellllllll.....I just remember I couldn't wait for DW to replace the insufferable Jay Shroeder - for two compelling reasons. Better doiwnfield passer, better leader. One other reason might have been DW kept his mouth shut while Shroeder was up & down on the field.. We have all seen the SB documentary descriing what was going on in the background between Gibbs and DW. I can see Mike's and Silent's pov - with a caveat. Shroeder wasn't going to town with the same surrounding cast. So not just any QB was plug-n-Play.
 
I respect each and every one of you. This was a good discussion today. It helped me feel a bit of football excitement!

I am very happy Doug was on that team, I am very happy we won, and I am happy for the question that was never asked but is always brought up "how long have you been a black quarterback?"

I dont think we should entertain getting rid of Anderson for anything less than a 2nd or 1st. With Kerrigan getting older and most likely not being here more than 3 more years, we need to have depth and rotation.

Not directed at you Mike. Why in God's name would we move Ryan Anderson - someone help me understand the logic in that? He's 25, six years younger than Kerrigan and has improved in every one of his first 3 seasons. If I had to move someone, it would without hesitation be Kerrigan whose skills (love the man or not) have been declining. I wouldn't move either one of them at this point. We would never get a 1st or 2nd for him, even if his talent warrants it. I think this is media/Twitter noise but haven't followed the rumors so who knows.
 
before yesterday's Doug Williams conversation, BB had posted an "inside report" from a man stating they were shopping him.

I truly dont get it, either, for the reasons I gave. I also dont think we will get a 1st or 2nd for him, but that is what I would ask to push talent like that away. I am already not happy with losing Preston Smith.
