Random Commanders Thoughts

Thaddeus Moss officially signed this morning.

Coming out of the draft TE was our weakest spot depth wise.

Good move here, Moss has the physical skills to have been a middle round pick save for the history of foot injuries.

We have free'd up a bunch of money, and the Trent trade gave us more. I don't think were done in free agency. There's usually a 2nd wave after the draft that can allow address some things you weren't able to address. I think we likely make a trade or two, possibly for a TE. I think we're still going to add some vet depth along the O-line, likely someone who can start at LT if needed, allowing Charles to EARN the job. I also think Boone made a going point being we added 16 free agents prior to the draft.

Just did a rough count on ESPN of our roster and including rookies we have more than 80 people on the team. Probably setting back a bit looking to see if a surprise cut takes place.

Yeah odds are damn good we’re not done yet with acquisitions with teams trading & cutting their rosters. Read an article the other day that the bears & sea chickens currently have a combined 17 TE’s on their rosters. Surely there’s a few that could be poached in that lot alone.

Don't sleep on Hentges, I think he's going to impress.

As long as we don’t bring back Sprinkle and expect him to compete for a starting job.

Every year we heard from the team that Jeremy was coming along with his blocking and catching and was going to be a contributor.

Then we got to the season and as soon as Davis went down for any reason our production at TE fell off the cliff.

I honestly believe Hentges would be a good #1. Not an all-pro by any means but a very solid starter.

Something like 60 catches, 700 yards with 7td’s

Why? Not disputing it’s possible - but what inspires the confidence? I can’t remember his name, but we let a practice squad TE go last year that looked better than any of the TEs on the roster imho...

It was JP Holtz that I liked and Flanagan also showed some promise.

Holtz is currently one of the 10 on the Bears roster. With them investing even more in that position on draft day, what does that say about him?

If he's good enough, he'll be on their roster...if not? Do we want to give him another shot?

He didn’t get a real chance until the end of the year & I believe he & Haskins were starting to rhythm. Look at the final 2 games for instance,
9 targets, 6 receptions for 90 yards & 1 td for a 15 ypc average.

We all know that the staff on payroll last season had zero clue on bringing in youth and properly utilizing it. It’s my opinion that if utilized properly, like the last few games he can be a reliable target for DH. Even though it was an extremely small sample size, it could flourish with proper coaching.

I wasn’t suggesting we bring him in, just highlighting the fact that Gruden and Allen couldn’t stop rotating guys on and off the practice squad and roster long enough to see if any of them could actually progress and be contributors. I’m sure they’d have gotten rid of Sims and Smallwood too if we’d let them continue calling the shots on 2019.

And btw, Holtz had similar production to Hentges when he was given a chance in Chicago. Averaged over 11 yds a reception. No one knows what he can or will do after a handful of rookie games. We had all kinds of interesting TE options last year including Donald Parham but elected to keep Mr. Concussion and a Senior Citizen on the roster in a lost season instead of seeing what we had in any of the other TE youngsters.

The key at TE is finding a receiving threat that is a credible in line blocker.

Brian Mitchell has called the Redskins TE group in recent years to be among the poorest in the NFL in supporting the run.

That has to change.

I like the fact Moss is 250 and is a physical player who is willing to sacrifice himself in the run game.

Some of the younger players we have had here in the past were 225-235 and didn’t have the strength to become factors there.

A lot of those '16 surgeries' were likely removing necrotic tissue that then required major skin grafting (see the end of this video). I don't know if there was just so much infection from the compound fracture that the tissue wasn't sustainable, or if he had 'necrotizing fasciaitis' which is sometimes referred to as 'flesh-eating bacteria'. But man it just ravaged his leg. And before anyone goes there - anyone who suffers the kind of penetrating break that Smith had can get this complication, has zero to do with skill of the physicians or surgeons. It can be fatal. That they saved his leg and he is where he is today is really a tribute to his MDs and support staff.

I think it would be amazing if he were to be able to make a return. I'm not as sure that I want him to. Another serious injury to that leg could cost him it. I don't care how determined, brave, and strong you are.... it's not worth losing a leg or your life for football.

On a side note, if I were a 2nd year QB trying to establish myself as the starter, I would not want to be competing with someone who was trying to make this kind of comeback. Smith's level of motivation is likely something we haven't seen on a Redskins roster before.

I'm telling ya, I wouldn't be shocked if Alex Smith competes for the starting QB job come TC.

So after getting rid of Dunbar and Williams, it seems to me that Rivera has eliminated 2 big distractions from the lockerroom.

Jonathan Allen has came out and said that the team is all business now and everyone seems to be on the same page.

So now that everything seems to be calming down......here's the good Ol DC media trying to stir things up.

Between beat writers posting Trent Williams' workout videos to Jason Reid emerging from out under his rock to remind everyone of all the drafting mistakes the team has made over the years, etc.
I'm like, Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelley? Seriously Reid? What in the hell does that have to do with 2020?

I'm thankful I'm in NC and only get a 1/4th of that nonsense down here. But for you guys in the DMV, decent Redskins sports talk must be hard to find.

Al Galdi is the one guy I always seem to find myself nodding along with when he offers takes.

Beyond that, to me they're all just talking heads getting paid to say shit.

I should say, I still love me some Doc Walker. He was really good to me and ES back in the day, all class when he didn't need to be. Not always sure exactly what he's saying these days, but still. ;)

It’s not just the ‘Skins. Slingczabe was still trash-talking the Caps en route to winning the Stanley Cup two years ago. Last year, same thing with the local media and the Nats... although they really did look that bad. Les Bullets seem immune to that, for some weird reason, and they really do suck.

There are local shows that talked to Kyle Shanahan and Kurt Cousins almost as much as if not more than local figures. They get ratings and hits. Those things don’t happen when teams are playing well... unless you’re the Caps winning a Stanley Cup. Then the next day the conversation starts to “Well... can they do it again? The Penguins repeated and bla, bla, bla... “

Basically, the local sports media sucks.
